18.01.2022 In 2015 I had the privilege of painting the award winning Australian author, Jackie French for my first ever entry into the Archibald Prize. Having never met me before, she was gracious and a willing participant - to have a relatively amateur artist paint a 2 metre portrait for one of the most prestigious art competitions in the country takes some courage and an enormous level of trust. That same year Jackie was awarded, Senior Australian of the year and I was sure it would... be impossible to get a sitting with her. But after sending her samples of my work with a few ideas for the piece, I found myself in Melbourne sketching her in a studio booth while she was recording audio for her latest children's book. The moment felt so surreal and is still one of the highlights of my career - thanks again, Jackie xx. Although the piece wasn't shortlisted for the Archibald prize, I was ecstatic to learn it was selected to exhibit at the Salon des Refusés at S.H. Ervin Gallery housed at the National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, Sydney and then at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery in Victoria. I will be showing the piece for the first time here in Brisbane next week at Graydon Gallery. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have cherished the moments painting it. Ben.
