25.01.2022 Well my horse went through the puddle no trouble at all at the SCATER CTR but he would NOT leave his buddy to walk trot canter at the cones. All those difficult gaits that apparently come naturally to other horses!! Join us at Benkalda Horse and Rider if you need a bit more practice at these very difficult obstacles....walk trot canter plus the really scary stuff, like mud and water.

25.01.2022 Difficulty rating on this challenge is HIGH. Very narrow and requires a lot of trust. So many horses cannot manage this one so it was great to see Lesley and Be...lla achieving it so calmly. No rush and a calm ask from Lesley. Love it. A great day at Benkalda with Caboolture Trail Horse Club. See more

25.01.2022 Dreams we have can sometimes come true. You still need to do the hard work apparently!! Wanting to spend time with horses and share what we've learned and learn from the people who are happy to share their knowledge is our dream. Drought and Covid delayed the opening of our challenge course but since July we have welcomed people to try our obstacles and start a conversation with their horse about trust and confidence. A new business is a challenge of its own. Every session sh...ows us how we can improve and be proud of what we offer. Feedback is welcome to help us improve and a lot of self reflection takes place after every rider visits us. Things go wrong but with good will and a bit of effort most things can be sorted. The only thing that can't be changed is the weather. A big thank you to all of the people who have given us a try and been so positive about what we have to offer. We are open until the heat beats us (early birds still welcome) and then back next year with clinics, challenge sessions, team events and much more. See more

24.01.2022 Weekend with your horse not quite what you hoped for..frustrating, miscommunication? Or maybe it was great and you'd like to build on your success. Sessions available at Benkalda Horse and Rider. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Message, email or text for more information.

24.01.2022 Happy Christmas everyone. We hope Santa finds you and that this Christmas is filled with love and gratitude for all the good things that happened in 2020. If we look hard enough they are there...To all the wonderful riders and their horses who visited us after a rocky Covid start, thank you for sharing your time and knowledge and we hope to see you all again in 2021.

23.01.2022 Emma brought this lovely girl over for a playdate. Taking a peek at 2021. Thanks for a great morning.

22.01.2022 Just a reminder for those who have booked in for our Not the Melbourne Cup Play Date, we are still waiting on a couple of payments and forms. Get in touch now to secure your space. We're looking forward to seeing you there!

21.01.2022 8% SUCCESS RATE - New Year’s resolutions don’t work very well for me (or apparently 92% of people) mainly because I’d need to make so many of them to make a real difference. So I’ve decided to look to my horse heroes and try to acquire some of the traits I admire in them. In no particular order of admiration some of them are Warwick Schiller, Ross Jacobs, Buck Brannaman, Callie King, Mark Rashid, Tim Hayes. I admire that they obviously have a great depth of feeling for the h...orses they work with and yet they can control their emotions when working with horses. They all get the job done without overloading the horse with their emotions and only use as much or as little pressure as needed to leave the horse better off because they have communicated clearly and consistently what they are requiring of the horse. They make the training about the horse, not about themselves and have not been afraid to admit that they have learned better ways and different ways of doing this over the years and that they have made mistakes. They can also, and this is SUPER important, differentiate between their FEELINGS and their EMOTIONS. Life seems so much simpler if there are rules to follow and we are not constantly having to ask is this what you want or is this the right thing to do and not being sure if the outcome is going to be punishment or reward. Being micro managed is soul destroying because you never know if you’re giving the manager/trainer what they’re asking for or doing it the way they want and it makes you feel powerless and confused. These trainers outline what they are asking for, stop asking when they get it, and reward every try. Way too big a resolution for one yearI think it’s going to take me considerably longer than that so I’ll make it an aspiration instead. The one thing I would add is keeping your sense of humour. Some of the horses who visit us are real characters, funny and quirky. We should never try to deaden that trait. It’s what makes them individuals and gives us so much joy. Who are your horse heroes and why? We’d love you to share.

20.01.2022 Finally...Covid X RainXX Fourth time lucky...40km winds. Angelo and Chester the brumby finally made it to the CTHC Challenge Course day. Angelo - come on. Chester - nup. Angelo - you can do eeet. Chester - ok ok yes I can.

20.01.2022 Horsey kids non horsey parent? If the kids are doing the riding and you’re doing the hard work: tacking horse moves away/keeps eating, feeding horse pushy, won’t face you, getting your foot stood on or horse wanting to nip you could benefit from bringing the pony (plus or minus the child) for a 1.5 hour session with us. Improve your handling of the horse, communicating clearly and staying safe. AND it’s a fun way of doing it by using our obstacle course, particularly if you are a non riding parent.

20.01.2022 Replacing some of the sandbags in the challenge course with Champ's help. Very concerned that I might have left some food in the bag. He's tired of being the challenge test pilot and is moving to catering and rubbish disposal.

19.01.2022 Alex McKee from A.M. Horsemanship joined us with one of her students, Marley the Whaler...Don't let a name fool you. He would do anything BUT go through the water obstacle. Alex was so patient and encouraging and knew when to walk away. Lots of laughs along the way. I'm convinced horses have a sense of humour. What an amazing horse for only four weeks under saddle - true to his breed and Alex has done a great job with him. Home on Monday to his lucky owner.

18.01.2022 New challenge at Benkalda. Dismount on the off side, walk around the front of your horse, without the horse moving the rider takes a hula hoop off the tree, walk around the front of your horse, mount from the off side, hula hoop over the horse's neck, side pass to the tree, replace the hoop. Amazing job Jackson...oh, you too Anita.

17.01.2022 Ticking off the January calendar - worming, tetanus and strangles vaccine, farrier, dentist. Poor horses are glad of a weekend off standing knee deep in grass to recover.

17.01.2022 What a day!! Had an awesome time with Maddy and Beau, Wendy and Storm. Beau and Storm started out a bit anxious and then wandered through a couple of obstacles ho hum. What a great way to spend a Tuesday.

16.01.2022 Sue practicing to be a grandma with the lovely pally Polly along for the walk. Club day at Benkalda Horse and Rider. Photo with permission. Sessions available for individuals, groups and casuals.

13.01.2022 Look to the left, look to the right, walk through the curtain. Beau was amazing today working his way through obstacles which would have freaked him out last time he was here. Ella has done a great job with this horse and he no longer pushes over her and he has gained an enormous amount of confidence.

12.01.2022 A few more for the brumby collection.

12.01.2022 Success means different things to different people. And it can be in the moment. One horse confident on the narrow bridge, one needing encouragement. Both of these riders attempted other challenges on the day and the outcome would vary for both. That's why we love having people at Benkalda Horse and Rider; so much to learn about your horse and the way you can interact and gain confidence as a team. Message or email for more information. Photos with permission.

11.01.2022 Our Goliath Play Date was a heap of fun. These gentle giants were so steady and willing. Thanks for a great day everyone. We've created an album and if any of you have photos from today we'd love you to share them with us.

11.01.2022 Competitive Trail Ride at Belli Park in October. Improve your judge point skills at our challenge course. See our flyer for sessions available and come and have some fun while you attempt some of our 40+ obstacles.

11.01.2022 We are taking advantage of only a few more sessions booked before the New Year to develop some new obstacles. I'll be using poor Champ and Stumpy as my guinea pigs as we climb up.....walk through.......get over.....We are extending our course to the open paddocks so you can finish off the day with some interesting challenges and plenty of room to push the boundaries once you're comfortable with the groundwork and the many obstacles in the course area. I guarantee you will have fun getting to know yourself and your horse even better.

10.01.2022 More photos from the Brumby Project weekend.

10.01.2022 Great day trying out a couple of new challenges at Benkalda Horse and Rider and then a ride out to stretch the legs. Thanks Carmel for riding Stumpy the Magnificent and Anita, Nat, Gracie and their brave steeds. So much fun. Photos with permission.

10.01.2022 Time out at the Hollow Log with a friend. Spent the day riding around Merrill and Dave's beautiful new property at Mt Byron. Caught up with the horses and rode the lovely BB over some gorgeous lush countryside. Lunch on the verandah to follow. Anyone looking for a country experience with kangaroos, koalas, and the most beautiful views should check this wildlife retreat out. Miss having Merrill close by to share rides and obstacles with. Upside is having such an awesome property to visit only an hour from Stony Creek.

09.01.2022 Book a session with us soon. A new 1.5 hour session available. $30 pp max of two riders to work through those little issues before they become big issues.

08.01.2022 Water?? No way. Save poor Dolly and drag her to the first aid station? Certainly..not a problem.

08.01.2022 Brumbies heading our way this weekend. Looking forward to hosting the Brumby Rescue Project riders over the next two days and witnessing the great work Anna and Brian do to offer a future to these lovely horses. Can't wait to see them working with their owners and having fun around the obstacles.

07.01.2022 Hello Summer - our last play date for 2021. Check out the flyer and get in touch to book your spot. This is our last play date for the year however we will still be offering sessions and camp over to beat the heat through December/January. Watch out for our Christmas gift vouchers and summer session camping offers.

07.01.2022 Visitors today at Benkalda Horse and Rider challenge course. Rabbit the lovely appalloosa and his owner Annette dropped in to work on some issues. Rabbit happy to put his feet anywhere, not so happy with things that wave in the wind and make a noise at the same time. Annette patiently worked through some of the challenges and he left a lot more relaxed. Rabbit was given homework to do before their next visit

05.01.2022 Experienced riders John,Kerry and Mary joined us at Benkalda with their not so experienced horses. So much enthusiasm and willingness to try new things share their knowledge as well. John came to riding as a mature adult and rejected the "old way" he witnessed when he first started riding. His kindness and patience with Peaches was lovely to watch. The ladies have younger greener horses who need a lot of support. Both of them rediscovered all that good stuff they had stored away and hey presto!! Willing horses. I had a great time. Hope you guys did too.

05.01.2022 The bridge was ok. The curtain gave me a fright but I did it. The walk through was scary but I managed. NO WAY am I doing the donkey challenge.

05.01.2022 Too wet for obstacles after the heavy rain on New Year's Eve so a ride in the forestry on Sunday was just what we needed. Thanks Carmel for taking care of my boy.

04.01.2022 Obstacle training is really paying off with my Little Champ. Willing to go off the beaten track to find his way around fallen trees, stepping over logs which has been an issue in the past and just feeling so much more confident in himself. Every day I see him gaining trust and confidence. Even when we have a small setback (pavers LOL) once we get past it he seems ready to step up and try even harder. Great ride today with some amazing women and their lovely Arabs.

04.01.2022 Does my bum look big in this?? Yeah - you're a clydiexpercheron. big and beautiful (and brave). Thanks Nat and Jester. Photo with permission.

03.01.2022 Love the smile.

03.01.2022 Big weekend with the Brumby Project visiting Benkalda Horse and Rider for two days of learning and fun. The heat didn't stop anyone from having a great time with the horses well looked after and riders improving their skills. Anna and Brian shared their knowledge and everyone added to their toolkit. Thanks for choosing our facility; we loved having you all here.

03.01.2022 Lost your mojo? Getting back into riding after a few years away from horses? New horse and a bit spooky? Book a one on one session or bring a friend and do three hours working through our Challenge Course. Groundwork and ridden, great for building confidence and getting to know your horse in a very different setting. We have added a 1.5 hour session ($30 pp) maximum of two riders for adult riders who want to address a particular issue. Before and after shots.....just joking. We don't do dye jobs.

03.01.2022 Hard work, determination and always trying to improve your relationship with your horse paid off for Pam and Rain on Sunday at their first CTR with a 3rd in the novice division. Practised at the training day at Benkalda Horse and Rider and then hit the forestry. Congratulations to you both- the smile says it all.

02.01.2022 Visitors yesterday at Benkalda. Merrill and Faith worked their way through some pretty difficult challenges. Faith could have done this one too....except she has a wobbly ankle. Points for trying.

02.01.2022 This is a must read article

01.01.2022 Every horse deserves a chance and Sophie gives every horse that comes her way just that.
