25.01.2022 This is the Deadman for the work bench. It slides left and right in between the legs as shown in the computer modelling. The Deadman extends the vertical working face area directly under the front vice and to the right. I will demonstrate its benefits in a video I intend to put together when the bench is finally finished.
22.01.2022 A quick progress report and highlighting some features of a slab taken off the side of the 8th and final log.
21.01.2022 A couple of updates for the new work bench. The first 2 are off front vice installation process. I decided to fit the vice before I laminated the top together. The other Photos are off the first lot of lamination’s, this will take some time to complete as the epoxy needs 24hrs or so to cure before unclamping.
21.01.2022 My Little Helper is starting to get used to shed caper. Lexi is fast learning about tug of war.
20.01.2022 Here is some photos of the milling I did today. This is log 7 of 8.
20.01.2022 Using a mortiser machine is a task I always enjoy doing, there’s something about being able to create a square hole with one tool. There is also the labour saving, a job that could take days reduces to hours. Anyway, time to make some tenons to fit these mortises. #bentchiselcreations #timberwindows #timberwindowsanddoors #tasmanianmakers #madeintasmania #tasmanianartisan #tasmania #handmade #Jimmypossum #handmadefurniture #woodworking
20.01.2022 My new business card’s arrived in the mail today. I also ordered some magnetic signs for the Ute in a similar design. At some point when I can spare the funds I intended to get some professional graphic designers to come up with a more unique way to present the business. However this is a good starting point.
19.01.2022 My new work bench is slowly coming together. This week I flattened the underside of the bench to get a reference point as you can see in the photos I have made a start towards installing the bottom rails using mortise and tenon. I am a bit further advanced than the photos show, I forgot to take some photos.
18.01.2022 I glued up the first of six sash frames this morning. To me there’s something special about making timber windows and doors, carrying on the tradition of handmade joinery. These sash frames will last for decades and will be my little contribution to history of the house. #bentchiselcreations #timberwindows #timberwindowsanddoors #traditionalcraft #tasmanianmakers #madeintasmania #tasmanianartisan #tasmania #handmade #Jimmypossum #handmadefurniture #woodworking
17.01.2022 I didn’t get barked at, so I guess that means I passed the inspection.
17.01.2022 Started carving the first leg on the new work bench
16.01.2022 A couple of photos of the slabs taken from the side of the final log.
14.01.2022 The new magnetic signs on the Ute.
14.01.2022 I turned the bench top over for the first time today. I got half way through doing so when I thought about recording how I went about it. Anyway, here is the second half of the process.
12.01.2022 I did the final laminating for the new workbench top today. I am looking forward to moving onto the next elements of the build, it feels like it has taken me forever to get to this point. The joys of having multiple things to do.
10.01.2022 I finished milling yesterday. I have absolutely loved this experience and it was a great sense of achievement knowing that I have milled an entire tree. I ended up with 31 slabs of varying thickness. Now the waiting game begins, some of the slabs will take up to 4 years to dry out.
10.01.2022 I did some more laminations of the workbench top today. I will have the top completely laminated in the next round. In you are wondering what rebated ends are all about, it is a lip for the ends sections to sit on. I have laminated the top together upside down for a couple of reasons, but the main reason is so that I can fit the legs and hopefully only have to turn it over once.
10.01.2022 I finally joined the top and legs together yesterday, here is a couple of photos taken before I started the process flattening the top.
09.01.2022 Here is a couple more pictures taken this week. I am now on my 3rd last log, the last 2 will be from the base of the tree and I hope to get some 100-150mm slabs. I will need a big breaky on these days. I included a couple of photos from where I cut away the start of a very large branch from the trunk, in order to square the log. I had a light bulb moment .... this would make a great coffee table top mounted on a turned leg from the same tree. I forgot to get another photo after I cut the slab, but I will add one soon. And finally, given that I have head that only a mother could love (even then I still wonder some days), my only chance of adding some warm & fuzzies is through another source. The photo says it all
09.01.2022 I just realised that the bottom of the photo was cut off, so here’s take 2.
08.01.2022 Here’s a couple of photos of coffee table slab I cut earlier in the week. A thick turned leg and base, also a glass top, the makings of a very unusual furniture pieces my view. I would love to get some feedback on my idea so please tell me what you think. Both positive and negative all make for balanced market research.
08.01.2022 These are the legs for my new work bench with the carving pattern marked out. I have loosely taken the design from a carved box made in approximately 1680’s in New England (America).
04.01.2022 I made a basic mobile base for moving stuff around my shed some months ago. This mobile base got a makeover this week with some new heavy duty wheels and a drop in frame to add another mobile bench frame to the mix. The primary reason for doing so was that I needed to get the new laminated work bench off my existing bench so that I can make the next elements of the new bench.
01.01.2022 Just a little bit special ..........
01.01.2022 I have started the process of putting things together. Today I epoxied the leg ledgers and rails into the legs whilst the top was in position as a dry fit. Joining the legs to the top will be next after the epoxy has had enough time to harden.
