12.01.2022 Dear Parents and Carers, Of late we have noticed more students are bringing food for recess and lunch which is what we refer to as occasional food, on a more frequent basis. These foods fit into the category of foods which have a very high saturated fat and sugar content. These foods do not have the nutritional value needed to sustain healthy growing bodies and minds. Also, foods in high sugar content can have an impact on children’s ability to focus and maintain concentratio...n in class for learning as well as maintaining a positive behaviour. When packing lunches can you be mindful of the foods that are being packed and leave occasional food for home and not for school. A reminder as well of the importance of children starting the day with a healthy breakfast in order for their bodies and brains to have the energy they need to kickstart the day in a positive way. To provide parents with ideas for packing healthy school lunches the Cancer Council has developed a Healthy Lunch Box website healthylunchbox.com.au. We know that 93% of children don’t eat enough vegetables and 22% are overweight. The website includes recipes and tips on how to include more fruit and veg in the family’s diet and is complete with an interactive lunch box builder to involve the kids, at home or on the move, with a smartphone or tablet. The website has been launched as part of Cancer Council NSW’s Eat It To Beat It program which runs free sessions and workshops for parents of primary aged school children, helping them to understand why fruit and vegetables are so important. Visit healthylunchbox.com.au to pack a quick and healthy lunch box today!
