09.01.2022 The next Bike on offer at the AMCA auction at Bulli on the 25th of august is the this ultra rare and very desirable 1937 4 cylinder K800 Zundapp. Price estimate... $37k - $42K The bike was acquired from the USA some years ago. It was allegedly sold to the Chinese army in 1937. After the Chinese civil war in 1949, the nationalist army of Chang Kai Chek fled from the mainland to Taiwan and took much material with them, including army material, but also the imperial treasures including most jewellery etc. During (and after ) the Vietnam war, Taiwan was a refuelling station for the B 52's, this were this an airforce sergeant found the K800 and decided to ship it to Hawaii. It later ended up on the mainland and was purchased from a relative of the deceased airforce sergeant. When the current owner purchased it , it was a basket case, but unmolested. The full rebuild took some years with most parts sourced from Michael Archer in Germany , who specialises in Zundapp motorcycles. Much work went into the bike. -frame lined out by Laurie Alderton -frame and sheet metal powder coated -Cylinders resleeved (Duncan Foster) -new pistons and cylinder heads (Aichner) -greater capacity oil pump -all bearings replaced in gearbox, wheels etc. -new wiring loom, tyres etc,etc The engine assembly was done by Adrian Vergison, The engines were notoriously fickle, as they were under oiled, however the greater capacity oilpump has largely fixed this. Also the oilfilter on the outlet was plugged and a diffenrent oilfilter put on the oil intake. This according to Aichner should do the job by delivering greater pressure to the engine. The bike runs, shifts and rides well and- the generator charges the battery (which was a big job).
