25.01.2022 On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, let us all pause for one minute to remember those who gave their lives to ensure our freedom. We shall remember them Lest we forget.

23.01.2022 Early this morning we attended a structure fire at Fountaindale. We worked alongside Tuggerah Rural Fire Brigade - NSW RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW units to extinguish a fire in the garage. Luckily the fire had not spread into the main house and residents were able to evacuate.

20.01.2022 On the 1st of October we entered the bushfire period. This period will generally be until March 31st 2021. So what does that mean for you? Well, there are a few changes that come into place during this time that everyone should be aware of regarding pile burns/ open burning on your property. - **A fire permit is now required for all pile burns** Please contact Central Coast Fire District Centre or FRNSW if you are in an urbanised area.... General Rules regarding pile burns remain the same. In our area the following must be adhered to: - Pile must be up to 2m in diameter and no more than 1.5m high - Only 1 pile is to be burnt at a time. - Vegetation must only be burnt- no household materials, building materials or timber pallets. - The pile must be at least 20m away from all dwellings, structures and unmanaged vegetation. - Adequate water supply must always be available. - The pile burn must always be supervised by a responsible adult. https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//Standards-Lighting-a-Fire-2017 http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/BFDP

19.01.2022 Yesterday, we held our Annual General Meeting. We would like to give a special thank you to David Mehan MP for attending the event, to present the members of Berkeley Vale Rural Fire Brigade with the NSW Community Services Award. We are honoured to have received such an award. 2019/2020 saw a historical bushfire season, floods in our local area and then COVID-19, we as a brigade are extremely proud of our members for their dedication, and resilience throughout this time.

19.01.2022 Yesterday Les was presented with his Westfield’s Local Hero Award. Congratulations Les! We are all very proud to work by your side and have you as a friend. Thank you again to those who voted.

19.01.2022 Today’s Fire Danger Rating is Very High and all permits have been suspended. Do you know what a fire danger ratings mean? The Fire Danger Rating gives you an indication of the consequences of a fire, if a fire was to start. It is based on predicted conditions such as the temperature, humidity, wind speed and dryness of the landscape. It tells you how a bush fire may act, what impacts there might be on the community if a bush fire was to start and when to implement your Bush... Fire Survival Plan. HOW FIRE PROOF IS YOUR PLAN. https://www.myfireplan.com.au/

18.01.2022 Fact: Lots of rain means lots of fuel for bush and grass fires. It only takes a few days of hot, dry and windy weather to cure grass and make it flammable. Make a bush fire survival plan so you know what you will do if there’s a bush or grass fire near you. Visit myfireplan.com.au #getreadyweekend

18.01.2022 The Berkeley Vale crew is currently at Cooranbong assisting with a Hazard Reduction. With the start of the fire season all fires now require a permit.

06.01.2022 A heartfelt Thank you from our very own Local Hero Les. I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people and organisations as well as making a few comments regarding me being awarded a Westfield Local Hero’s award for 2020. Firstly thank you to Westfield Australia for sponsoring the event and in total Westfield will give $1.26 million in $10,000 grants across 126 Westfield centres in Australia . I would like to thank Kelly, Anita and Megan for promoting the event... so successfully for Westfield Tuggerah . The organisations that the three successful candidates represent receive a $10,000 grant from Westfield . The grant for Berkeley Vale RFB will be spent on equipment for the Members, items for our tankers that we require and to assist in completing a building project at The Fire Station. The presentation was amazing and the spotlight was firmly on the 6 finalists of the event. There were no huge Westfield banners just some very kind words the presentation of the awards and a delicious lunch. I must thank the Members of Berkeley Vale Rural Fire Brigade . It is because of the camaraderie and mateship with the Members that makes it all so rewarding for me. They are the most amazing crew that l have ever served with in my 43 years as a Member. The fires and events of last fire season has only strengthened the bond between us. I dread the day when l am too old to be part of this crew anymore however l will make every minute count while l can. To my wife Cheryl who has been there since before l joined thank you all that you have done for me and to assist the Brigade from the background and thank you for your understanding. Well you are understanding most of the time anyway! I would like to thank every person who voted for me in the Westfield Local Hero awards of course without your support I would not have received the award. Congratulations to the other two successful candidates Pauline and Mel l was proud to stand with you as we represented our organisations. Lastly, to anyone who has some time on their hands or would like to help the community please look at volunteering. Find something you enjoy doing and look into becoming a volunteer. You may have a talent or skill in something that you can share with others. There may be something you want to learn or become involved with. The opportunities to volunteer are endless , just start making enquires you will be surprised at the opportunities that are out there. Thank you Les Smith
