24.01.2022 The last time there was a suggestion of giving me [an Australian medal], I told the government they could stick their medals where the monkey stuck his nuts. The thing is if they gave me a medal now, it wouldnt be given with love so I dont want anything from them. They can bugger off! Nancy Wake, a charismatic Australian hero

14.01.2022 Secrecy, innovation and fear created the perfect background for ludicrous conspiracy theories during the Cold War. 8 weeks, 8 Cocktails, 8 stories, we call it the conspiracy series. Week #7: The complot Cocktail of the Week K E N N E D Y Sweet | Creamy | Complex Plantation OD & OFTD Rums | Rumbullion Rum | Lime | Almond Milk & Star Anise Syrup Designed by Giulia... Who killed John F. Kennedy the 22 November 1963, and why? The Warren Commission report concluded that President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, a lone wolf Marine Corps veteran and self-declared Marxist who had once tried to defect to the Soviet Union. The report also concluded that Jack Ruby (a man involved in the underworld activities of illegal gambling, narcotics, and prostitution), acted alone when he killed Oswald two days later. The Commissions findings have proven controversial and have been both challenged and supported by later studies over the decades. The truth behind JFKs assassination is probably a lot more complicated than the Warren report wants us to believe, and a lot of people wanted him dead! Kennedy was a classic Cold War liberal: someone who believed in confronting the Communists (nonviolently, if at all possible) and creating a network of social welfare to relieve social anxiety. During the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy had refused the unanimous military advice to bomb Cuba, and had settled the crisis by giving the Soviets what they wanted; the removal of missiles from Turkey. Kennedy, at the contrary of many other presidents, didnt see foreign affairs as a series of challenges to his manhood. He saved his crew member after his Patrol Torpedo Craft was cut in two by a Japanese destroyer during WWII. As a true war hero; he hated war. But America had other plans, while the FBI was cleaning homeland, the CIA was overthrowing governments all around the world. With Kennedy out of the picture his Vice President, Lindon B Johnson now in office, changed the political agenda from the social, economic, and political reforms that Kennedy had stressed, to victory in the military conflict. The 22 November 1963 might be the day America stopped being great

02.01.2022 Limited Edition Cocktail T H R E A D S Fresh | Spicy | Fruity Pimento Dram, Tequila Blanco, St Germain, Vanilla, Lime, Guava & Pepper - Designed by Joan During the Cold War, the world has known several events that could have led to WWIII, but politicians (or luck) always found a way to avoid a nuclear conflict. It might be the reason why the younger generation doesn’t recognise the Cold War as a proper war. But do we need a direct military opposition to acknowledge a confli...ct as a war? Or is living with the psychological pressure of nuclear annihilation for 44 years enough to consider the Cold War as war? Travel back to the 80s London, when David Bowie and Prince songs were sharing the UK chart top 100 hits with "Two Tribes, an anti-war song by British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood; a song inspired by Reagan and Thatcher’s policies and... the movie Mad Max. After a few years of détente between the USA and the USSR in the 70s, Reagan and Thatcher started an aggressive foreign policy towards the USSR and pushed the world to the brink of war. At the same time, the British government released a pamphlet named Protect and Survive to reassure the Britts, but the book had quite the opposite effect on the Queen's subjects. The impact of this book was massive in the British culture, and led to the BBC documentary drama named Threads. The plot centres on two English families as a nuclear confrontation between the USA and the USSR erupts. The film depicts the medical, economic, social and environmental consequences of a nuclear war. Even today, watching Threads all the way through is extremely disturbing and is bound to make you have nightmares!
