25.01.2022 Hi everyone, I have freshly baled pasture hay for sale. Pick up from the paddock $7 or $10 for shedded bales. Pick up is Peechelba East. Message for more details.

20.01.2022 Following on from our fun video of why we recommmend (and horses LOVE) Smoochies by Hygain, due to their low sugar content, we wanted to explain the more seriou...s consequences of feeding high sugar diets to your horse. As we mentioned in our last Post, horse teeth like our own, can get cavities or caries and literally rot away causing severe dental pain!! We spent three days in January working with Steve Halfpenny from Light Hands Equitation who is acutely aware of the impact of sugar on his horse's teeth. One of the biggest culprits is oaten hay - a hay very high in sugars (often called water soluble carbohydrates/non-structural carbohyrates). Many of us were not aware of the impact feeding this hay or other high sugar feeds and treats on dental health. Thanks to the great work of dental vets we began to discover the dangers of sugar and no more so than in Western Australia where the effects began to be discovered. We have so much to learn about caries in horses, as there may be other causes not just sugar. A veterinary colleague, Dr Kirsten Weber Dental Vet in WA is currently doing a PhD researching this very topic - this is a great start and we look forward to her findings. For now, be very aware of what you feed your horse and take a look at these oroscopic images of inside one of Steve's horses mouth and the devastating effects of sugar! Whole sections of the teeth have been eaten away by sugar and bacteria - no different to your teeth if you eat too many lollies and don't brush your teeth!! Steve and his horses are on the long road to recovery - we are getting great results thanks to Steve's committment to changing their hay source and feed type. We will maintain dental examinations and treatments to support their teeth and keep them painfree and happy. Think twice about your treats and feeding! Good luck!! https://www.facebook.com/light.hands.equitation/ https://www.facebook.com/dentalvet/

19.01.2022 Here is an extreme example of the importance of dentistry in horses of all sizes. Little explanation is required here to see the dental problems. Unfortunately..., this poor guy had to be euthanized due to a myriad of problems. This pony was rescued from a life of neglect. The kind souls who took possession of him thought it would be permissible to allow me to use his skull to educate others. Now he will see lots of Agriculture students and horse owners to educate them to the importance of regular and proper dental care. If we could peel back the cheeks of every horse, nobody would question the value of equine dentistry. #EveryHorseEveryYear

09.01.2022 Many dental practitioners believe that large reductions like this cant be made in one treatmentand in some cases that is true..but in most cases they must be do...ne. Carefully and cautiously with good sharp burrs and lots of irrigation to keep the teeth cool as well as watching the color of secondary dentin to avoid damage to the pulp chamber(blood and nerve supply of tooth). The importance of this reduction is to restore anterior posterior motion of the jaw. In addition the hooks were cutting into the tongue and lower jaw bone. This horse showed zero signs of pain discomfort or poor riding prior to dental work. He also had no issues eating! Check your horses once a year by a certified dental technician to ensure your horses mouth is in good shape! See more
