14.01.2022 Have you packed away your salts for winter thinking they aren’t needed as the hot weather is over...?? As the weather get colder (it was 1.2 degrees here this morning! ) our horses tend to drink less. This can have implications such as dehydration and vets also report an increase in cases of things such as impaction colic during winter as a result of them drinking less. What can you do to encourage your horse to drink more in winter? ... Add warm water to your horses water buckets/troughs to take the chill off to encourage them to drink. Add salt to their diet to trigger their thirst reflex (salt is recommended all year round). Add a wet food such as speedi beet to their diet to increase water consumption without the horse drinking more. Soak hay for a short time to allow it to absorb some water (without removing nutrients). Bernie’s has a range of different salts to keep your healthy during the winter months.
