24.01.2022 Broad-leaf Privet - Ligustrum lucidum This large weedy tree is in flower now and if you find one on your property, ring bark it or cut it down. They produce hun...dreds of small black berries which will fall beneath the tree and produce a multitude of seedlings. The birds feast on the berries and spread them through the suburbs and bushland and it has become a major environmental weed. #lovinglivingjuringgai #stepincsydney #landcarensw

24.01.2022 Flying Free We know that flying-fox, which are important pollinators and seed dispersers, often end up zapped after landing on electrical wires. It's a rather ...sad topic, but you can help researchers learn more about the frequency and distribution of flying-fox electrocution. John Martin, from the Taronga Conservation Society, has asked that one and all: 1. report on and submit a photo of sightings of flying-fox in electrical wires using the iNaturalist app, and 2. spread the word so that others report sightings. The data is public, so anyone can contribute and access this information: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/flying-foxes-powerlines We currently have no idea how many animals die this way, but this campaign will help to address that lack of data. 22.01.2022 Thanks again to Renee (Cumberland Bird Observes' Club) for this... The huge White-bellied Sea-eagles at Olympic Park laid 2 eggs which hatched on 28 & 30 July and the chicks have grown wonderfully. The older one fledged on 11 October, the younger one has been flapping/hopping to another branch and will hopefully fly soon as well. It has a problem with one foot but is otherwise healthy. Here are some screenshots, and you can see progress at: https://www.facebook.com/Sea.EagleCAM

07.01.2022 A lot of white butterflies were seen at Berowra recently. Were they one of these?

06.01.2022 Hello Friends, Our members are always working hard to read and respond to local issues. As a group we read planning and policy documents and formulate responses to give voice for our local natural environment. We have sent in two more documents today relating to Hornsby Council's Sustainability Strategies and the Rural Lands Study. These documents will shape what happens in our community in the future. You can read our feedback on the link below. If you are interested in protecting our local environment you may like to help us formulate our responses. We always need extra help. Many thanks and have a great day. https://www.friendsberowravalley.org.au/submissions/

02.01.2022 Love butterflies? So do we. This stunning butterfly was spotted in the bush last week. Post your own pics here. This is the common Jezebel. These butterflies are common in summer. They breed on mistletoe plants. Male butterflies patrol around the tallest trees on the hills and ridges, waiting for the arrival of newly emerged females so they can mate with them. Eggs are laid in clusters. The young caterpillars feed on mistletoe leaves together during the day, but more mature caterpillars spread out to feed. Cocoons (pupae) resemble bird droppings (https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/species/12254)

01.01.2022 Join us for a virtual walk through the Blue Gum Forest, Hornsby. Starting at the end of Rosemead Road.
