21.01.2022 SITTING ADVICE FROM HUSSEIN One of the biggest adjustments with COVID has been working/studying from home. As a consequence our incidental exercise has significantly decreased. - What happens when you sit for long periods of time?... Our muscles are like elastic bands; they shorten and stretch. When you keep the muscle in a shortened position for a long time, the muscle will get used to that shape and these short muscles can cause tightness and pain. Even with the best intentions of optimal sitting posture, this is not sustainable for the whole work day as the muscles will often fatigue. Ultimately, we are designed for movement. - Can we do anything about it? Yes! 1) Take MICRO BREAKS. Set an alarm that goes off every 30 minutes to remind yourself to go for a walk to the tap, drink water, then come back and continue what you are doing. 2) Move more and sit less. Try and increase your incidental exercise throughout the day. 3) Stretch, Stretch . Stretch! Particularly stretching your hamstrings and hip flexors, may help to reduce lower back pain. At Berowra Chiropractic, we offer ergonomic advice in addition to our face-to-face consultations. We are here to help :)

Don't let a few more kilos creep on. Get on top of managing high cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels with constructive advice. If you are needing some help to change your diet, our Dietitian Dallas is here to help on Monday and Saturday every week.
12.01.2022 Just a reminder... Susie is going on maternity leave from the 23rd of December. It's not December yet but appointments are filling up fast so try not to leave it until the last minute if you want to see her before she goes on leave.
12.01.2022 WELCOME HUSSEIN Hussein will be joining our team when Susie goes on Maternity leave. As a sufferer of chronic low back pain since the age of 20, Hussein is passionate about empowering patients to take control of their pain, rather than pain controlling their life. ... Hussein has completed a Bachelors of Science, Honours in Health Sciences and Masters of Chiropractic at Macquarie University. In addition to his practical work, Hussein spent a year of doing research at the George Institute of Public Health and has participated in published articles. Hussein enjoys the occasional social soccer games and playing the piano when his hands aren’t too tired from treating patients. Please give Hussein a warm welcome and say hello to him when you see him around Berowra.
12.01.2022 Be Smart about Smart Phone Use According to the stats, our average time spent on our smart phones is almost 38 days per year. That was not a typo! 2.5 hours a day times 365 days a year! YOUR POOR NECK! Imagine spending 38 days with poor posture, what would the muscles of your neck be like by the end of the year? Can we do anything about it? ... Yes! Simply throw your smart phone in the bin! Let's be more realistic: 1- Be mindful of your posture while browsing on your phone. Be like the Hussein on the right not the Hussein on the left. 2- You always tell your kids that they have a certain amount of time on their phones or tablet. Why not have the same rule for yourself? 3- Alternate between sides. I know it’s hard to use your phone with your non dominant hand, but if you divide 38 days a year on your phone between 2 sides it makes it slightly better. 4- Set a timer on your phone to remind yourself to stretch daily. If you are on your phone and see the reminder, you are more likely to stop using your phone and stretch. Happy pain-free browsing, swiping and general screen time

08.01.2022 School holidays are over and the little ones are heading back to school! Yaaay! But before sending the little ones off to school, you must ensure that their school bag is not putting unnecessary strains on their little bodies . 1- make sure that the bag size is right ... Make sure that the school bag is the suitable size for them; ideally you want the top of the bag to be in line with the bottom of their shoulders and the bottom of the bag against their lower back and just above the hips 2- Make sure the bag is not heavy The weight of the bag should not be more than 10% of your child’s body weight. For example, if your little one weighs 40Kg then the bag should not be heavier than 4Kg . 3- Make sure that they keep both straps on both shoulders . A single shoulder carrying 4Kg vs 2 shoulders carrying 2kg each. What do you think would better for their shoulders? We at Berowra Chiropractic wish your little ones a great school year

02.01.2022 HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT? Did you know that you spend 33% of your life sleeping? You would want to be comfortable, supported and in a good position. What happens if your spine is constantly in a poor position for 33% of your life? Your spine will not be happy and you are probably going to be waking up with various aches, pains and stiffness. What is a good sleeping position?... Ideally, we aim to keep the spine in a neutral position. Sleeping on your tummy (as shown in picture number 1) twists your neck and puts unnecessary strain on the surrounding muscles and joints. You may be waking with pain and tightness in your neck and shoulders, or even headaches. We come in different shapes and sizes as do our mattresses and pillows; what works for one person won't work for the other. Try and aim for positioning similar to pictures 2&3 so your spine is in a more neutral position. Hussein likes the rolled up towel to feel more supported during his lunchtime naps. Have a good week everyone!
