25.01.2022 Today marks the anniversary of the tragic death of NSW RFS volunteer Colin Burns. Colin lost his life on his property at Belowra, as he was making his way to th...e local fire shed to help protect local residents who were sheltering from fires. Colin was a long time member of the Belowra Brigade in the NSW RFS Far South Coast Team, initially joining in the late 1980s. We remember Colin and our hearts go out to his family, friends and fellow volunteers today.

24.01.2022 What is the Australian Warning System? The Australian Warning System is a new national approach to information and warnings during emergencies and natural disasters like bush fire, flood, storm, extreme heat and severe weather. The System uses a nationally consistent set of icons, like those above, to show incidents on website and apps.... The System has been designed based on feedback and research across the country, and aims to deliver a more consistent approach to these types of emergencies, no matter where you are. Australia’s fire and emergency services aim to provide you with timely and relevant information during emergencies. Remember don’t wait for a warning. Take action quickly and don’t delay. https://youtu.be/JLAO3vdYB2M

24.01.2022 #rememberanceday2020 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we forget.

AML uses the same location technology that is already used on smartphones when looking up directions or using a ride share service. read more here... https://www.communications.gov.au//advanced-mobile-locatio

20.01.2022 Did you know that bushfires can create their own weather? Known as pyrocumulonimbus clouds, they're a thunderstorm that forms in the smoke plume of a fire. As ...the plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises high in the atmosphere, it broadens and cools causing cloud to form. If the atmosphere is unstable a thunderstorm can develop, potentially producing violent winds, thunder and lightning, which can ignite new fires. As we saw during the significant bushfires last summer, pyrocumulonimbus clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in fire behaviour making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight. Find out more about pyrocumulonimbus clouds in our blog: http://ow.ly/wKtS50CA9nw

14.01.2022 OLD NORTHERN ROAD (ONR) HR - DAY 2 NSWRFS is out with NPWS and NSW Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, identifying cultural sites of Aboriginal and I...ndigenous significance. We joined with Uncle Col Lyons of St Albans RFB (Hawkesbury) and Selina Timothy and Kev Telford from NSW MLALC to perform a smoking ceremony to cleanse and ward off bad spirits. Staff and volunteers from NSWRFS were invited to participate in the ceremony before commencing hazard reduction burns in the area. This was a great example of an integrated fire management experience Please be aware that: Firefighting crews and vehicles will be operating in and around the area, including on roads. Trees may continue to fall after the burn and that the area may be unsafe. ALL walking tracks in the area will remain closed until further notice to allow for crews to ensure the safety of the area for residents and community. Please remember to only call 000 if you see a fire without any firefighting crews about. Did you know that you can find out information about planned hazard reduction burns at the NSW Rural Fire Service website? 13.01.2022 I have never been more proud of Australians. This year has tested all of us. In response, Australians have just quietly gone about doing what they have needed t...o do. The comeback is now underway. In 2021 we will continue to work together to build for the future. In my Christmas card this year I just wanted to reflect my gratefulness to all Australians. So we selected a few whose stories typify what so many have done. They symbolise the best of us. Thank you for your service and your resilience.

13.01.2022 On this day last year, NSW experienced some of its worst fire danger ever recorded at the time with Catastrophic fire danger forecast across the Sydney, Great...er Hunter and Illawarra/Shoalhaven areas, leading to widespread school closures. Fire danger ratings are an important tool to help you make decisions about what to do and under these conditions, your only safe option is to leave early. You can learn more about the fire danger ratings, and check the rating for your area each day, at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fdr See more

11.01.2022 As part of a new Australian Warning System, the way we display incidents on our website and app has changed. The icons shown on on Fires Near Me and our website have changed as part of a national initiative to have all states and territories displaying incidents in the same way.

11.01.2022 It's been another challenging day for firefighters, working in extreme heat with dozens of fires across the state. The good news - the southerly change is headi...ng up the coast. It's already passed through the Illawarra region and is hitting the southern parts of Sydney, with temperatures dropping more than 10 degrees. Unfortunately, the hard work isn't over because the change will cause erratic winds at some of the fires we're working on. At 5pm, there's 62 bush and grass fires across NSW, with the fire at Faulconbridge at Watch and Act ahead of the change.

10.01.2022 #NSWRFS Poor maintenance and incorrect usage of power boards can result in home and office fires. Poor maintenance and incorrect usage of power boards can result in home and office fires endangering lives and causing considerable damage to property. Statistics show that over 350 residential house fires were started by electrical faults in NSW during 2006. Problems with power boards can arise from Overloading the power board.... Dust build up in unused points. Power leads becoming dislodged over time, particularly under a desk where they are knocked by feet. Poor placement of power cables and extension chords leading to the power board. Inadequate ventilation of the power board preventing normal dissipation of heat generation. Limited or no understanding of the amount of power being drawn by different appliances. Heavy plug-in transformers that will "over balance" and partially unplug, resulting in over heating from poor connections. Maintenance tips Regularly check that all plugs are firmly fixed in power boards. Ensure adequate ventilation is provided for power boards. Regularly inspect power boards and leads for signs of damage and degradation.

10.01.2022 Saturday 28 November - VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER for the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area. 10.01.2022 C/- Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC - Seasonal Outlook Our Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook: December 2020 February 2021 is out today. It shows that large parts of NSW west of the Great Dividing Range face above normal fire conditions, as well as grassland areas of the ACT and into north eastern Victoria. Grass and crop fires are the main concern in these locations for the summer months as the growth dries out in the warmer weather.... WA has largely missed out on the rainfall in 2020 and conditions are very dry, with parts of the south and south west coasts expecting above normal fire conditions through summer.
