25.01.2022 #WAYBACKWEDNESDAY: SPANISH INFLUENZA Were sure youve probably seen lots of comparisons of the current COVID-19 situation and the Spanish Influenza. Also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, the Spanish flu saw around a third of the worlds population infected between autumn 1918 and winter 1919, resulting in 17-50 million deaths. A major factor in its spread was the movement of troops from World War One, especially with their return home. The flu didnt hit Australia until Janu...ary 1919, during the third wave, coinciding with troops returning from the front after the War. It wasnt until July that the flu reached Berrigan, as outlined in this article from 31 July 1919. In all, Australia saw 12,000 deaths during the pandemic. As always, more information can be found in the Museums archives! Jerilderie Herald & Urana Advertiser - Thursday, 31 July 1919

23.01.2022 #FLASHBACKFRIDAY: BERRIGAN SHOW IN THE 40s With the sad news that Berrigan Show Society have cancelled their 2020 Show, we wanted to take a trip back to the 1940s, which saw the decade begin with cancelled shows and ended in celebration. Although getting through World War One with only one missed show in 1915, World War Two was not so kind. In early July 1940, the committee had come to the decision to abandon the 1940 show, owing in part to the first loss in over 20 years ...that came out of the 1939 show. The committee was hopeful to revive the show again in 1944, but by mid-September, the conditions of the district were less than favourable for the event. It wasn't until 1946 that the committee was able to stage another show, and after recording a loss in 1939, they were able to make a 176 profit. This success continued through the rest of the decade, showing the strength of the committee and community to bounce-back after the adverse conditions of the war years put normal life on hold. The 1949 Berrigan Show coincided with a 'Back-To-Berrigan' week, giving the end of a hard decade a fitting farewell as many familiar faces returned to the district to celebrate the occasion. 21.01.2022 #FLASHBACKFRIDAY: BACK TO SCHOOL And just like that, the school holidays are over and school is back in session for another year! Today we're throwing it back twenty years to 2001 with the February edition of the 'Berrigan Times', looking at the new intake of kindergarten students starting their schooling at Berrigan Public School and St Columba's Primary School. ... As exciting as a new school year is, it is of course a little sad this year with the classrooms and playground of St Columba's eerily quiet... 20.01.2022 #FLASHBACKFRIDAY: 100TH BERRIGAN SHOW This weekend was meant to be the 122nd Berrigan Show Society, but like most events, has had to be cancelled because of COVID-19. And while it's sad that we're missing out on our local show, it's the perfect time to reminisce and share our Berrigan Show memories! Let us take you back to 1998 and the 100th Berrigan Show, which was described by committee and patrons alike as a huge success. Gate takings were up $2000 from the previous year..., with the lovely warm Spring weather responsible for bringing everyone to town and the grounds. The day saw a display from the local fire brigade, John Patterson jumping through a ring of fire on his horse, and a Snakes Alive exhibit. Showgoers were also kept entertained well into the evening with a fireworks display and the Berrigan Bushdrovers performing. The show was officially opened by Tim Fischer, who had just been re-elected as Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Farrer, which certainly added to the celebrations. Horse exhibitor numbers were up from the previous year, so much so that it was a struggle to fit all the horse floats on the ground. Meanwhile there was strong competition in the sheep and fleece sections. And in it's second year, the Beaut Ute Competition was a massive hit with onlookers. Share YOUR Berrigan Show memories in the comments below, or head over to our Berrigan: It's History & People group, as well as the Berrigan Show Society page! As always, if you want to discover more Berrigan Show history, or the history of other local organisation and events, be sure to pop into the Museum. #BerriganShow #WouldBeShowWeek Ashleigh Crammond enjoying the Sideshow attractions CUB Clydesdales 100th Show Results Photos and results published in the Southern Riverina News

15.01.2022 On Wednesday 18th November, it will be 40 years since a horrific day for Savernake residents. 06.01.2022 #FLASHBACKFRIDAY: BERRIGAN POOL With the temperature rising and the Berrigan War Memorial Pool open, this week we thought we'd share a short excerpt from Ian Fuzzard's 'Berrigan: Today and Yesterday' (1965). The pool was only opened in 1962, so Ian's mention is only short and sweet: "Since the construction of the swimming pool, swimming has been introduced somewhat in a competitive capacity, with carnivals being held regularly with numerous competitors from other centres, ...while Friday night competitions have also been held. The last two summers have been of a cooler nature and this retarded the sport in the early part of the season. However, it is still in its infancy and bigger times can be expected in the future." As we head into summer, make sure you stay cool & hydrated, keep an on your pets, and be sure to check in on your neighbours! As always, if you want to learn more about Berrigan's pool and swimming history, pop into the Museum! And if you head over to our group Berrigan: It's History & People, you can find LOTS of photos of the construction and opening of the pool, shared earlier in the year From 'Berrigan: Today and Yesterday' Dedication plaque

04.01.2022 #WAYBACKWEDNESDAY: SPANISH INFLUENZA We're sure you've probably seen lots of comparisons of the current COVID-19 situation and the Spanish Influenza. Also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, the Spanish flu saw around a third of the world's population infected between autumn 1918 and winter 1919, resulting in 17-50 million deaths. A major factor in its spread was the movement of troops from World War One, especially with their return home. The flu didn't hit Australia until Janu...ary 1919, during the third wave, coinciding with troops returning from the front after the War. It wasn't until July that the flu reached Berrigan, as outlined in this article from 31 July 1919. In all, Australia saw 12,000 deaths during the pandemic. As always, more information can be found in the Museum's archives! Jerilderie Herald & Urana Advertiser - Thursday, 31 July 1919
