22.01.2022 New regulations for short-term rentals- NSW Government. 29-10-2020 Short-term holiday rentals have been a topic for discussion in the Berry community over some time. Those living near a short-term rental property sometimes refer to them as Party Houses and if they are not managed well can be confronting. ... Here is a copy of the State Governments media release on a piece of legislation just passed that seeks to address this issue. There are a number of links for further details in the release. For your information. Rick Gainford, Secretary for the Management Committee - Berry Alliance and Berry Town Crier. MEDIA RELEASE: New Regulations for short-term rentals 29 October 2020 A mandatory Code of Conduct will be introduced for short-term rentals in NSW to protect the rights of hosts, guests and neighbours. Short-term rentals in NSW are increasing in popularity, with the industry generating over $30 billion each year. From 18 December 2020, a new Code of Conduct will impose obligations and clear guidance for booking platforms, hosts, letting agents and guests. A key feature of the Code of Conduct will be the introduction of an exclusion register to help ban disruptive house guests or hosts. Under the exclusion register, strict new penalties will be in place for anyone misbehaving in short-term rentals. Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson said the new set of rules will protect the rights for everyone, which put mutual respect front and centre. The standards are enforceable, with powers available to NSW Fair Trading Commissioner to take disciplinary action, including penalties and exclusion from the industry for repeat offenders, Mr Anderson said. 16.01.2022 COVID-19: SOME INFORMATION ABOUT FACE MASKS By Holly Landgren for the Berry Alliance and Town Crier Management Committee At the start of the year I wrote a Sustainable Berry article expressing the hope we would become a town that eschewed take away coffee cups; six months later not only has that not happened, we are now in the position where possibly more take away cups are being used, and disposable face masks have been added to many people’s daily routine....Continue reading

12.01.2022 Tourism and businesses opening up again. The Berry Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has asked that this letter from them be distributed widely to our Berry Community. To the Berry Community,... "There is no sugar coating it - the last 12 months have been horrendous. Drought, fires, a brief flood and now a global pandemic. "Each of these individual events alone would have severely impacted our business community however lined up back to back it has been devastating. "The wonderful support from our amazing community during these stressful and trying times has meant businesses have been able to continue to tick along, tread water and not sink. "We ask that as the restrictions ease please bear a thought for the businesses in town, most have just survived one of the hardest professional and personal challenges they have ever faced. "While they are very keen to open, the owners and employees are still stressed, there is still some way to travel on the path back to good mental and financial health. "They are doing everything they can to adapt to an ever-changing situation both in business and their family lives. "Everything has been turned upside down and they are yet to work out what is ok, what needs fixing and what is broken and needs replacing/rethinking. All of them are looking forward to some kind of new normal in this changing world and thank you for your understanding and compassion as they endeavour to be compliant with all of the new rules and regulations that they have been asked to comply with. "We thank you for being kind, compassionate and patient, we are all in this together and must continue to respect each other. "The rebuild has just begun and we ask wherever possible you ‘Buy Local’. "Again, many thanks for all your support over the years and the last few months in particular. The Berry Business Community is a much stronger place due to the caring considerate understanding big-hearted compassionate and patient community in and around town. "From the Berry Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Berry Alliance Town Crier says: We endorse the call for our community's continued understanding, patience and compassion and that we support local businesses and Buy Local as much as possible. 12.01.2022 Article in the May 2020 Berry Town Crier Berry Public School PLANT PROPAGATION NURSERY... During the early weeks of the school year, Stage 3 students came to the nursery weekly to observe some ways that local plants adapted to living in the local environment. A highlight of the science sessions was learning how to use a microscope to appreciate the detail of the surfaces of different textured leaves. Observing the cells, venation and roughness of a sandpaper fig leaf, the glossy smooth surface cuticle of the leaf of a cheese tree or the ‘drip tip’ of a lilly pilly leaf, provided a basis for comparing different ways leaves adapt to prevent desiccation during hot summer weather conditions. Planting in the Tree Orchard and in the garden outside Year 5/6 classrooms was to be an early National Tree Planting Day activity for the students. Some planting will be done during the school holidays, so when the children return to school, they will see some new plants which have interesting leaf adaptations in their garden. For the time being, it is not possible to come to the nursery at the usual hours. However, plants can be ordered by contacting [email protected] A plant species list will be sent, and arrangements can be made for plants to be collected. This is a great opportunity to browse www.growingillawarranatives.org to learn more about local plants that will suit your purpose.

09.01.2022 "NEW PLAN FOR ILLAWARRA AND SHOALHAVEN Monday, 2 November 2020 A new vision that protects the stunning, natural scenery of the Illawarra Shoalhaven hinterland while focusing homes and jobs in existing centres will promote prosperity for the region over the next 20 years. ... The updated draft Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Plan 2041 includes a strategy for Metro Wollongong Health Precinct, a hydrogen hub at Port Kembla and earmarks West Lake, Nowra-Bomaderry, Bombo Quarry and existing centres for 30,000 new homes and more than 45,000 new jobs. A green grid connecting parks, open spaces and bushland with cycleways and pedestrian pathways will make the region’s natural beauty more accessible to residents and visitors. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes called for the community to have their say on the plan which contains 30 objectives to guide land use over the next two decades. The Illawarra Shoalhaven region has transformed from its industrial and steel-making base into an innovative service, creative and knowledge-based economy, Mr Stokes said. This plan is about building on that transformation while preserving the unique rural coastal character which has made the region such an attractive place for people to live, visit and do business. To read the draft updated Regional Plan and SIC and have your say visit: www.planning.nsw.gov.au/ISRP " The above is an extract from the NSW State Governments Notice. There are a number of items in this that are pertinent to the Berry community including that we are involved in one of the two priority growth areas - Nowra-Bomaderry (the other is West Lake Illawarra) which impacts on Berry. This is the last opportunity to have your say, make your submission on this important document. The Berry Town Crier has previously drawn this to the attention of the community when we are given the opportunity to have input prior to the draft document being finalised and now advertised for comment and submission by the State Government. From the Berry Town Crier Newsletter updates for Friends and the it will also be in the December Town Crier. Rick Gainford, Secretary, on behalf of the Berry Alliance Town Crier Management Committee. - Member for the South Coast Shelley Hancock said the plan proposed a new contributions scheme that would support better infrastructure and public spaces. A draft Special Infrastructure Contribution (SIC) has been established to ensure the right infrastructure is in place to support the development of the region’s two priority growth areas of Nowra-Bomaderry and West Lake Illawarra, Ms Hancock said. The SIC will ensure the community reaps the benefits of the region’s growth with developers contributing up to $121 million for important upgrades to roads, education and health facilities, emergency services, cycleway networks, public open spaces and biodiversity.
