25.01.2022 OUR POWER IS OUT Please bare with us as our power is out. If you have an appointment today we will be in touch. Fingers crossed it’s back up soon. ... Stay safe everyone!

25.01.2022 PART 5 of this weeks SHOULDER series! The 5th and final part of our shoulder series this week is looking at thoracic spine mobility! WHAT OTHER AREAS CAN I TARGET TO HELP MY SHOULDER PAIN?... The shoulder is a complex structure that requires smooth biomechanics to function properly, not just from the shoulder joint itself, but from the areas surrounding. Things such as an upper crossed (hunched) posture, a reduced level of thoracic spine (upper back) mobility and decreased scapular (shoulder blade) movement can all contribute to shoulder pain. In order for the shoulder to move freely and help combat pain, these areas must be addressed. HOW DO I INCREASE MY THORACIC SPINE MOBILITY? A simple exercise you can do lying on the floor at home to tackle that stiff upper back and help relieve tension through the shoulders is the OPEN AND CLOSE BOOK exercise. 1 Lay on your side with bottom leg straight and top leg bent at a 90 degree angle with arms straight out in front of you resting on the ground. 2 Keeping your arms straight, rotate your upper arm as far as you can go to the opposite side (like opening a book). 3 Hold this position for 2 breaths and then return your arm to the original position by rotating back (like closing a book) 4 Perform 10 reps for 2 sets and make sure you do it on both sides. Thank you for coming along on this journey with us all this week learning a few exercises and stretches to help your shoulder pain! If you have any further questions or need help with any of the exercises, call the clinic today, or book online, to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths. Our aim to to help you MOVE BETTER, FEEL BETTER and LIVE BETTER. www.berwickfamilyosteopathy.com.au 97020094 #osteopathy #berwickfamilyosteopathy #move #movebetter #feelbetter #livebetter #osteo #berwick #osteopathberwick #osteoberwick

21.01.2022 PART 4 of our week looking at the SHOULDER! Today's topic is STRENGTHEN. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE STRONG SHOULDERS?... Shoulder strength is vital to activities of daily life. Whether we are pushing, pulling or lifting, the shoulder comes into play. Strengthening the muscles that support your shoulder will help keep your shoulder joint stable. Keeping these muscles strong can relieve shoulder pain and prevent further injury HOW TO STRENGTHEN THE ROTATOR CUFF As we spoke about on day 1 of this shoulder series, one of the main muscle groups associated with the shoulder is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made up of 4 muscles that rotate the shoulder in or out. 1 Stand with your arm by your side and elbow bent at 90 degrees near a wall or door frame depending on which direction you are rotating 2 EXTERNAL ROTATION - Rotate your arm outwards (out towards the wall) and hold this position 3 INTERNAL ROTATION - Rotate your arm inwards (into the frame) and hold this position. 4 Begin with 5 second holds, relax and repeat 5 times x 2 sets daily. Start small and you can build up if this starts getting easy 5 Do both the internal and external rotation exercise on both sides This is a good starting point but once you are comfortable with this, the next progression is adding in a RESISTANCE BAND (if you have one!). We do supply these at the clinic if you would like to get one. Instead of holding the muscle contraction, going to contract the muscle through its range. 1 Tie the band around a pole or door handle. 2 Stand with your arm by your side and elbow bent at 90 degrees. 3 EXTERNAL ROTATION - Start with your arm on a 45 degree angle and pull outwards to 90 degrees. 4 INTERNAL ROTATION - Start with your arm on a 90 degree angle and pull inwards to 45 degrees Try doing 6-8 reps x 2-3 sets daily Increasing muscle strength will help to improve your ability to perform shoulder-related tasks and minimise the chance of injury. The shoulder is a complex network of joints and muscles that may require more specific attention, so call us today or book online to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths. 18.01.2022 PART 2 of this week's SHOULDER series is focusing on MOBILITY. IMPORTANCE OF MOBILITY As we mentioned in yesterday's post, the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. ... It is important that we maintain this mobility to maintain proper function and movement quality, and decrease the likelihood of injury. BASIC SHOULDER MOBILITY EXERCISE The PENDULUM SWING is a really gentle, passive exercise that encourages the shoulder to move around, as big or small as possible, within the joint capsule. It uses gravity and momentum to create motion rather than muscle strength. 1 Lean over a bench or table and rest your hand on the table 2 Let the arm hang beneath you and then slowly begin to move in a circular pattern 3 Starting small with the circles, gradually get wider and wider, remaining within a comfortable range 4 Perform this movement for 20-30 seconds and then slowly it down and change directions. Try performing this 2-3 times daily. 5 Change to the other side and follow the same process. You can even play around with directions of movement (forward/back, left/right) The shoulder is a complex network of joints and muscles that may require more specific attention, so call us today or book online to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths. Our aim to to help you MOVE BETTER, FEEL BETTER and LIVE BETTER. www.berwickfamilyosteopathy.com.au 97020094 #osteopathy #berwickfamilyosteopathy #move #movebetter #feelbetter #livebetter #osteo #berwick #osteopathberwick #osteoberwick #shoulder #shoulderjoint #osteoshoulderpain

18.01.2022 [THE ELBOW] Are you getting a sore elbow and forearm? Is your working day spent sitting at a desk or out on the tools? ... You could have LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS, or TENNIA ELBOW! Tennis elbow is a common overuse injury we see in the clinic. Whether you’re spending all day working on the computer or on a ladder with a hammer, tennis elbow is usually caused by performing activities that are highly repetitive in nature (such as typing, using a mouse and using handheld tools). These repetitive activities can cause microtears and inflammation in the tendons that extend our wrists causing pain and discomfort where they attach around the elbow. Stay tuned for some simple and effective exercises that may help reduce the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. 14.01.2022 1 HAVE YOU BEEN SUFFERING FROM SHOULDER PAIN? 2 ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO PERFORM BASIC DAILY TASKS LIKE BRUSHING YOUR HAIR OR HANGING THE CLOTHES ON THE LINE? Shoulder pain is a very common complaint seen by our team of osteopaths. The unique and complex anatomy of the shoulder makes it the joint with the greatest range of motion but least stability, making it more susceptible to injury.... A dysfunctional shoulder may feel tight and achy, or sharp and painful. WHAT MAKES THE SHOULDER SORE? Most commonly shoulder pain is a result of repetitive stress or trauma to the rotator cuff - a group of muscles responsible for movement and stability of the shoulder, however the shoulder can also become injured and painful from things like impingement, posture and ageing. Over the course of the week we will be posting a few exercises for you to try, that may improve your shoulder range of motion and alleviate your pain. The shoulder is a complex network of joints and muscles that may require more specific attention, so call us today or book online to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths. 06.01.2022 PART 3 of this week’s SHOULDER series looking at MUSCLE STRETCHING. WHY IS STRETCHING SO IMPORTANT? Stretching increases your flexibility and range of motion, which in turn, also prevents muscle injury and reduces pain and discomfort. ... The shoulder has a lot of muscles around it that help support and move the joint. These muscles can become tight and painful so it is important that we make sure we keep them loose by performing stretching techniques. SHOULDER/CHEST STRETCH The PEC STRETCH is an easy to perform stretch that requires a door frame or wall to lean on. The pec region is the front of the chest, an area that can become really tight, so by opening up through the chest and front of the shoulders it keeps us moving well and feeling good. 1 Stand in a doorway or near a wall and stand with one foot forwards and the other back 2 Place your hand and forearm on the wall/frame, with your elbow at 90 degrees 3 Lean forward into the stretch and you should feel it through the front of your chest 4 Perform this stretch for 15-20 seconds and do 2-3 sets each side daily. 5 Make sure you are breathing whilst holding the stretch and just go to wherever is comfortable. You can also adjust the position of your elbow to change the position of the stretch or if it is a bit sore. The shoulder is a complex network of joints and muscles that may require more specific attention, so call us today or book online to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths.
