17.01.2022 #OTD Lieutenant Leslie Maygar, VC, DSO On the 23rd of November 1901, Lieutenant Leslie ‘Elsie’ Cecil Maygar took part in an action that would see him awarde...d Australia’s highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. At the outbreak of the Second Boer War, Maygar was serving in the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles as a Lieutenant. On this day in 1901, whilst fighting at Geelhoutboom, Natal, Maygar galloped out and ordered men of a detached post, which was being outflanked, to retire. The horse of one of his men was shot under him when the enemy were within 200 yards and he dismounted and lifted the man on to his own horse. Unfortunately, his horse bolted, forcing both to dismount. Maygar put the man on its back and told him to gallop for cover, whilst he continued on foot. This all occurred under very heavy fire. For his actions that day, Maygar was awarded the Victoria Cross. Maygar would later reenlist in the First World War, where he would rise to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before being mortally wounded in action at Beersheba in 1917. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he was also awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his command during WWI, and was also Mentioned in Despatches four times. Maygar was the sixth and final Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross for service in the Boer War. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 15.01.2022 Did you know in the US at precisely 11:11 a.m. each Veterans Day (Nov. 11), the sun’s rays pass through the ellipses of the five Armed Services pillars to form a perfect solar spotlight over a mosaic of The Great Seal of the United States.

14.01.2022 Kevin "Dasher" Wheatley was born in Sydney, and had several jobs before joining the Australian Regular Army in 1956. He served in different battalions of the Ro...yal Australian Regiment, including time in Malaya, before being posted to Vietnam in 1965. A short and stocky man, he had become known as "Dasher" for his rugby skills. On 13 November 1965 Wheatley and Warrant Officer Ronald Swanton, were operating in the Tra Bong valley. Their platoon came under heavy fire and Swanton was shot. Although he knew his mate was dying, Wheatley refused to leave him. Again urged to withdraw, Wheatley would not. Instead, he pulled the pins from two grenades and waited for the enemy. Two explosions were heard, followed by bursts of fire; both men were killed. Wheatley's refusal to leave a mate was seen to be in the highest traditions of gallantry. His body was returned to Australia for burial. Wheatley was awarded the Victoria Cross, the General Service Medal (for Malaya), service medals for the Vietnam War, the United States Silver Star, and South Vietnamese awards. This evening at 4.55pm, on 13 November 2020, the Last Post Ceremony will commemorate Warrant Officer Kevin Arthur Wheatley VC and his service in the Vietnam War. 13.01.2022 Berwick RSL Remembrance Day Service 2020. Unfortunatly not like previous years, we apologise to the community keeping this low key, however the decison was made to avoid crowds due to COVID-19 restrictions.

11.01.2022 A powerful photo, not because they are three Australian Commandos on operations in Afghanistan but because they are three mates who were all killed in action on... three completely separate occasions. Today, like every day, I will remember them and all my other brothers who died serving their nation. Too many great men no longer with us. #lestweforget #armisticeday #brothersinarms See more

11.01.2022 Please consider watching this around 11 am tomorrow November 11 - Remembrance Day. #Remembrance

01.01.2022 Imagine having to lie about who you are to serve your country. That’s exactly what one soldier had to do to enlist during the Second World War. One of thousands... of Indigenous Australians who served during the war, his name is now recorded on the Australian War Memorial’s new Indigenous Service List. Danusha Cubillo, a proud Larrakia woman, has been working on the list with the Memorial’s Indigenous Liaison Officer Michael Bell. My work here is discovering or finding hidden names that we didn’t know before, Danusha said. It’s about respect and giving that person their due. They fought for this country, and we want to acknowledge them for who they are, and be able to tell people proudly who this person was. The Indigenous Service list is now available online.
