10.01.2022 Chenin Blanc is about as West Australian as it gets It came here on the first boats to arrive with European settlers and has been growing in the Swan Valley ever since for over 190 years! It gets its origins from Loire Valley in France (their warmest wine region) so it stands to reason that Chenin Blanc has absolutely thrived in the Swan Valley (being Australia's warmest wine region) to produce some of the worlds most outstanding expressions of this grape right here ...in Perth! Often mistake for Sauvignon Blanc (due to the name), Chenin Blanc is a much more versatile grape and with its naturally high level of acidity can be made as a sweet wine or even a sparkling wine. Traditionally however it is a dry table white wine and the true beauty of this grape for me personally and what makes it so special is it's ageability. Most people wouldn't normally associate white wines with ageing however a good bottle of Chenin Blanc could potentially be cellared for up to 15-20 years! Wait around 6-7 years (some wineries have done the work for you here) and the acidity starts to soften out to develop the most beautiful, elegant textural notes (almost like you are drinking velvet), and the wine has shed it's early apple and pear fruit flavours to enter into world of wonderful limey, toasty notes. Aged Chenins make even the most hardened of red wine drinkers stand up and take notice thanks to its outstanding vibrance and complexity (so red wine drinkers, never say never!).
