24.01.2022 Hey! Today is World Prematurity Day! I am lucky enough to work in a unit where the Preterm Birth Prevention team are fabulous! ... Premature babies need delicate care and nurturing, and there is a lot of work and support to better improve their health and outcome. Breastmilk is a fantastic option if available! There is so much care for extreme pre term babies, but I want to take about the the late pre term baby! Late preterm babies can be tricky! I see more and more late preterm babies who struggle to breastfeed well. They are born in good condition , are a good weight , are 36-38 weeks, and are treated like Term babies. BUT, they are NOT term babies, and do not have the energy or capacity to feed like a term baby. Late preterm babies often do not stimulate the breast well, mums may end up engorged, babies cannot empty the breast, they fatigue easily, may look like they’ve had enough or are milk drunk, but are actually exhausted or conserving energy. They may need a nipple shield to stabilize at the breast. They may need to have top ups of breast milk , they may need frequent switching of the breast to facilitate their suck/swallow reflex. Mums may need to express to protect supply. Late preterm babies get discharged so quickly now from hospitals, with no special follow up, no plan in place and no ongoing support for breastfeeding management. Late per term babies are the group that’s easily missed! So, please, if you have a baby who is born 36-38 weeks, who’s treated like a term baby, and you’re discharged home early, reach out and seek support so I can help you achieve your breastfeeding goals, help you with supply management and ensure your baby is getting adequate nutrition and calories to thrive! Breast milk has so many qualities

23.01.2022 Hi! NBR but health related! As many of you know, I love everything nutrition and cannot stress the importance of nourishing well at any stage of life, but particularly when you're sleep deprived and feeding you little ones!... Many mums have "protein"shakes on the run, which is great. These shakes are one better and are Complete Meal shakes - packed with the perfect balance of complex carbs, fats and proteins. They are my "go to"one the run when I can't fit in lunch ( most days!!) so, I wanted to share this offer as it's fabulous! SALE ENDS TOMORROW 10am. If you want more info give the post a like or comment and i'll be in touch x

21.01.2022 Save the date and share the post to anyone you know who may interested!

21.01.2022 Hey! This is something I get asked about a lot- mums who need a procedure and are told to stop breastfeeding or to pump and dump. There are very few medications that you cannot take whilst breastfeeding! ... Have this discussion with your Anaethetist prior to your operation/procedure and if they cannot provide you with information about the safety of medication whilst breastfeeding, you can either call me or the King Edward pharmacy information line and they will give you all the information about the drugs and risks versus benefits of breastfeeding whilst taking the medication! There is generally NO need to stop breastfeeding!

21.01.2022 MERRY CHRISTMAS! What a year it’s been! I’ve met some incredible mums and babies in what has been one of the most stressful years for many! So many new mums were without their family to offer support and encouragement, one was even without her husband as he was stuck overseas throughout birth and the early days of breastfeeding.it has been tough.... I am grateful to have been in a position to be that person to offer support. This year has definitely thrown more challenges both personally and professionally, navigating the changing world we are in. To all the wonderful new families I’ve met and supported throughout the year- thank you for contacting me, putting your trust in me, referring your friends to me, and allowing me to guide you through your breastfeeding challenges! I have some time off to reset and come back fresh in the NY to continue doing what I love... watching mums and babies learn how to breastfeed! Have a great Christmas xx *I have a couple of urgent spots available on the 30th December*

21.01.2022 Our annual tradition at Coogee beach! Merry Christmas from the Coote’s xx #aussirchristmas #coogeebeachwa #family #summer2020

20.01.2022 Hey! One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing the ongoing success months later!! This gorgeous mum and baby called by to say hi today and he is still breastfeeding like a champ! ... It wasn’t an easy start, and it wasn’t textbook, but through mums positive attitude to accept and adapt to baby’s needs, feed on demand (often!!) and not follow the norm they have achieved a beautiful breastfeeding relationship and he is just delightful! If you need breastfeeding support I am here! Reach out and let me be part of your village and I will work with you to overcome challenges, carve a path to walk forward and encourage you every step of the way! Thank you for allowing me to share this photo #breastfeedingsupport #perthbreastfeedingsupport #perthlactationconsultant #beststartlc_evecoote #beststartlactationconsultancy #wamums #mumsandbubsperth

18.01.2022 The Millennium Cohort Study, a large, prospective, UK birth cohort study, was used to look at the relationship to breast/chestfeeding and behavioral outcomes in... children and adolescents. The Speyer et al. team found that being breast/chestfed for three months or more was associated with fewer parent-reported behavioral difficulties, including anxiety, difficulty making friends, and difficulty concentrating. The researchers evaluated children at ages 3, 5, 7, 11 and 14 using questionnaires about their strengths and difficulties. The results held even when adjusting for the confounders of mother's education and mental health, and family wealth. More evidence that lactation supports emotional health. 18.01.2022 Morning! What’s your favourite refuel food? How do you nourish yourself whilst running after little ones, breastfeeding multiple times a day, sleep deprived, and possibly back at work juggling the whole lot??? ... Remember, postnatal depletion is REAL! we sacrifice so much as women and put our families first constantly. If you are not well nourished it can impact your mental health, emotional health, physical health and your sleep! Health starts in the GUT! So, next time you have the 3pm slump, reach for some nuts/fruit, a shake, avocado and quinoa crackers, and fuel your body! Don’t be tempted to reach for the chocolate and give yourself a sugar high, the sugar slump that follows isn’t worth it!! My refuel food is a complete meal shake. It’s packed full of superfoods, ancient grains, and the perfect balance of complex carbs, fats and proteins! It’s my staple lunch as I’m always in the go or consulting! There are loads of options out there, if you want to know more about the one I take shout out!!

18.01.2022 Hi! I am excited to be a guest speaker at this afternoon of information and education to encourage and empower mums to be! I’ll be discussing how to prepare for breastfeeding, the early days of breastfeeding, realistic expectations, common challenges and how to overcome them! ... If you are pregnant, or know anyone who is, share this post! I’d love to see you there!

17.01.2022 ....And that’s a wrap! From Sam’s first Sports carnival to his last! Where did those years go? It’s amazing how some days seem long, Groundhog Day, same routine, different day, and they can all merge into one, BUT blink and it’s a New Year! ... I’m so proud of Sam, he is a boy who wears his heart on his sleeve, he is full of compassion, passion and love. Yes, he is loud (so loud ), he speaks before he thinks, he makes mistakes, but he has the biggest heart and is a beautiful boy! 10 weeks left of primary school then it’s time for Sam to spread his wings and discover so much more that awaits him in high school! Cherish your cuddles, enjoy the home time with your little one, embrace the clingy child, the snuggles, the want for you ALL day.... because before you know it this will be you!

17.01.2022 Hey! Do you have a troublesome boy? I certainly do, and he is the most thoughtful, gentle, considerate, empathetic human in my house! Yes, he is loud, adventurous, wears his heart on his sleeve, doesn’t think through situations well, is reactive, did I mention loud...? ... BUT, that’s what I’m here for- to guide him, navigate the storms, be the safe space for him to be himself, help him debrief when he feels silly for speaking before thinking, and to be his biggest fan. Naughty troublesome = full of heart, life and adventure try to ride with them and life will be easier than butting heads and suppressing his spirit. Thanks Maggie Dent for sharing- this is so true x

16.01.2022 Hey! I love this article, and how true it is! No matter what age your children are- PICK YOUR BATTLES! ... Sometimes, we lose focus of why we want our child to to X/Y/Z, and it comes down more to the point of WINNING the argument! Ask yourself, is it really worth winning the argument? Who will it benefit? Is your child really doing something terrible/wrong/dangerous or unkind? If not, would it be so bad if you thought before you speak, dictate your wishes and thoughts, and suppress what your child actually feels is the right thing to do/wear/act? One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a mum- I LIKE TO BE IN CONTROL!! The other biggest lesson - I CAN’T CONTROL EVERYTHING!!!! So, pick your battles, let them wear what’s unacceptable to you, but perfectly acceptable in the scheme of things! Have a great Sunday!

13.01.2022 Morning! Wow, this is explained so well, and THIS Is why I’m passionate about bridging the gap and improving nutritional health of families, amd why my other biz aligns so well with maternal and child health! Any improvement to your gut health will benefit both you and your whole family, and it’s really easy to make simple changes.

12.01.2022 What’s my answer when people ask me what’s the difference between breastmilk and Formula? There is no comparison! Formula is food. Breastmilk..... it is so much more than food! Yes, it has cars, carbs, proteins, but it’s also bursting with prebiotics, Probiotics, amino acids, hormones, DHA’s, antibodies, immunoglobulins, And SO MUCH MORE! ... But- it’s not just used for food! It calms babies, it acts as a comfort, it protects them, increases their immunity, has hormones that help them get sleepy, satiated, happy. It’s their comfort, it increases their bond, and it it’s forever changing to adapt to their needs! It is unique for your baby! Any amount of breast milk benefits your baby. If you want to breastfeed, link in and learn all about it before you have your baby! If you’re struggling to Bf, link in and let me support and guide you. #beststartlc_evecoote #perthlactationconsultant #breastfeedingsupport #wabreastfeedingmums #breastfeedingmumperth#perthmumsandbubs #breastmilk

11.01.2022 R U OK DAY..... What does this really mean? So many people can say the words, but does anyone actually answer the truth? Or if they do, does the person asking offer an ear to listen and support? It’s so easy to ask if someone is ok- but look at them when you ask, listen to them when they answer, and offer support and be that person if they need you. It’s easy to walk away, but being there is often all it takes to makes the difference! ... Being a mum is tough, we are not ok all the time. I know I often say I’m fine when I’m juggling a million hats, but I’m a self confessed martyr Being a midwife and a Lactation consultant is a privilege. Women open up to me, families tell me how they are feeling, mums feel safe to shed a tear and tell me they’re not ok. And I there. I am the ear that listens, the shoulder to shed a tear in and the voice to give you guidance. I love being a lactation consultant but my life as a midwife lets me truly be with women Do not be scared to ask for help, reach out, have a chat and be honest if you are not ok. It makes us stronger to surround ourselves with people who care and understand, empowers us to find solutions and to be ok #ruokday #womenshealth #mentalhealth #beingmumistough #lactationsupport #perthlactationconsultant #beststartlc

11.01.2022 Hey! Spread the word, and come and say hi!

11.01.2022 Morning! Do you like having your purple book? Do you find it a pain to remember to take it to all your appointments? Do you fill it out and have a good read through it? Have your say!

09.01.2022 World breastfeeding weekend week has officially ended so I thought I’d post my gorgeous boys! (6 Years ago)! I wasn’t an IBCLC when I had my kids. I’d been a midwife for 11 years when I had Oscar and loved helping mums breastfeed. I NEVER even considered I’d have issues. I didn’t consider having a late preterm baby, with a weak suck. ... I didn’t consider I’d bleed from 28 weeks pregnant and have a a small, unhealthy placenta and an IUGR baby. I didn’t consider having Major Placenta Praevia , EM C/S and having a large blood loss. And I didn’t even put any of this together to think any of this meant I may have struggles with supply and breastfeeding! After 6 weeks of low weight gain, cracked nipples, nipple shields and constant pressure from other health professionals to give my baby more than human milk, I finally felt we were making progress! Oscar pretty much fed 2 hrly around the clock for months! It really was a full time job. BUT, I was ok with this ( for the most part). I had support from my husband, and together we tag teamed and I caught up on sleep when I could. Oscar was happy, healthy, full of energy and YES, he was lean/small/could do with a lamb chop ( the comments people say...). Yes, he probably could have done with more milk, but I could only give him what my body made, so he snack fed regularly. I accepted that, I was happy to do that, and it worked for us. My second son,Sam- he was a a guzzler! Born at 39/40 SVD, and nearly a kilo heavier than his brother! He fed every 3 hours, only fed once overnight by 4 months and was a machine! So, the moral is... do what works for your family! Not every baby will feed the way the textbook says they will, some snack, some are efficient, some just need time to work it out, some struggle for a long time, and some have other challenges that make feeding even more difficult. But, with support, guidance, encouragement and determination, you will get there! And look at them healthy, strong, happy boys. Both had such a different start in life but both beautiful healthy boys now! #breastfeedingmums #beststartlactation #bfmumswa #breastisbest #newmums #breastfeeding #anybreastmilkisamazing

08.01.2022 Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Keeping it real! This mum has smashed her Bf goals and little Miss is now 12 months old! ... There were lots of struggles at the beginning, and breastfeeding didn’t come easy to this mum and baby, but with support, patience and heaps of time and practice they jumped the hurdles and crossed the finish line! I think it often takes 2-6 weeks to establish breastfeeding, and it is so under estimated in the pre natal and post natal community! Any new skill takes time, and this skill is double the challenge as baby also needs to learn! With the right support, breastfeeding goals can often be achieved! If you are, or know of anyone who is finding breastfeeding challenging, needs some extra support, or even just a confidence boost and reassurance, then I am here to help! Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2021!

05.01.2022 So many amazing things happening for mums to be and new mums atm!

03.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day! To all the dads I’ve met through the years of supporting women- you are amazing! Today is an extra special Father’s Day for me as I get to spend Fathers Day with my own dad! (another positive of Covid for my family!)... This is his first Aussie Father’s Day and the first one I’ve spent in 17 years of living here with him Have a fabulous day! X

02.01.2022 Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Let’s talk perfect latch! What’s a perfect latch? ... Is it what the textbook describes? Is it how the baby in picture looks? Or... is it what’s perfect between you you and your baby?! This gorgeous little lady does NOT have the perfect latch! She doesn’t make the best vacuum, clicks happily through her feeds, doesn’t drain a breast fully. But she loves breastfeeding ! After lots of work on different positions, intervention and feeding aids, there came acceptance that she is not going to achieve the textbook latch overnight, and mum and baby have found a happy medium and are enjoying breastfeeding! #breastfeedingmums #beststartlactation #bfmumswa #breastisbest #newmums #breastmilk #infantnutrition #mothersmilk#perthlactationconsultant #breastfeedjngsupport #lactationsupport #beststartlactationconsultancy #perthmums #mumsandbubs #breastfeedingbaby #breastmilkisallyouneed#beststartlc_evecoote #anybreastmilkisamazing #perthbreastfeedingmums
