24.01.2022 So Long and Thank You! After thirty-one years working for Empowered Living Support Services and Hunter Valley Care, today we farewelled the lovely Jennifer Campbell as she heads off into retirement. Jen started out in the kitchens at the Royal Newcastle Hospital before moving into nursing and then finally finding her home in administration. She is known for her prowess with spread sheets and post-it notes and is something of a legend around the traps. She will be sorely miss...ed by all. Jennifer is planning on continuing her travels around Australia with her husband in their caravan they are just waiting for the QLD border to open! Best of luck and happy travels Jen. Send us some photos!

22.01.2022 Got your kids at home and need an educational and worthwhile activity? WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR LOVED ONE at BETHEL! Actually, write a letter to someone else’s loved one too!... Snail mail is the perfect antidote to our current situation. Why? Sooooo many reasons! 1. Because you WILL make their day brighter! (Seriously! This is one of the best and easiest ways of Spreading Joy!) 2. They can enjoy it over and over again: keep it near them, hold it, smell it, read it to their friends, have a staff member read it to them, hang it on their wall and smile whenever they look at it. 4. Because it’s a great way to keep contact with the people we love in this socially-isolated time. 5. You can use all those amazing art supplies, colourful pens and stationary I know you are hording! 6. Sending cards and letters is like sending Love and HUGS in the mail! Handy when we can’t hug in person! 7. Sending a card/letter to someone reminds them that they matter, that they are important and that makes a huge difference to people. 8. With all the bills we receive, it’s exciting to receive something fun. Think of that as you send off your letter to someone. 9. You can turn a normal day into an extraordinary day with one stamp. Priceless! 10. Give your kids the experience of bringing joy to people with just a little bit of effort.

19.01.2022 GOOD NEWS for VISITING YOUR LOVED ONES! The recent outbreak of COVID-19 in the Northern Beaches and Greater Sydney Regions saw visitor access restricted to all NSW Aged Care Facilities. Happily, yesterday the advice from the NSW Chief Health Officer was updated, and for all Hunter Valley Care and ELSS Facilities this means that VISITS ARE ONCE AGAIN POSSIBLE and in certain circumstances RESIDENTS CAN GO ON OUTINGS. *PLEASE NOTE that all visits and outings must still comply ...with stringent health measures. Call your facility for details BEFORE visiting. Should you have any questions in regards to the interventions we have in place, or how they relate to your individual resident and circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss them further.

19.01.2022 Looking for a worthwhile activity for the kids this week? How about writing to our residents :-) 1) Write a letter or do a drawing 2) Pop it in our mailbox (or post) at the address below 3) Include your address if you would like to receive a letter in return... Our residents LOVE receiving letters, even more so now they can’t have visitors. Letters or drawings from local children will help them stay connected to the community in this time of isolation. 19.01.2022 Today is RU OK day but every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and downs. LEARN WHAT TO SAY AT THE LINK BELOW If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK? If someone says they’re not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and ...check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask
19.01.2022 BETHEL TO REMAIN IN LOCKDOWN - OUR RESPONSE TO PRIME MINISTERS COMMENTS 21/04/2020. Dear relatives and friends, Thank you for your continued support and understanding in relation to the measures we have put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Whilst we recognise the statement made by the Prime Minister Mr Scott Morrison yesterday (21 April 2020) in regards to visitation to Nursing Homes, we find this information conflicting to the other health advice in place for... our population, of which our Nursing Home population is even more vulnerable. We cannot visit one another in our own homes and we are healthy and do not have the comorbidities that cause COVID-19 to be deadly. Therefore we find it confusing to suggest that visiting those most vulnerable to COVID-19 is a good idea. To date the measures we have taken have kept our residents well and COVID-19 out of our facility, so at this stage we will not be changing our lockdown measures to allow visitors. Whilst we appreciate that separation is hard, the decision to maintain these measures is not taken lightly and is taken to keep our residents safe. Our decision to remain in lockdown is supported by many peak bodies such as LASA. Sean Rooney from LASA stated on 21 April 2020 This approach has previously been acknowledged by the Government and the Aged Care Quality Safety Commission as appropriate, given the risk to vulnerable older Australians in care. We offer phone calls, facetime, video calls, and through the window calls for you to keep in touch. You can also email us and we can print out photos and letters. The old-fashioned letter and card is also a great way to keep in touch. We will let you know when things change. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Care Manager. Kind Regards, Robyn Turnbull Residential Operations Manager 22 April 2020
18.01.2022 Back in June Bethel held a Beanies for Brain Cancer Day. The residents and staff were all happy to participate by wearing their favourite beanies, and some of them looked right at home - like Ken here!

17.01.2022 For all family and friends: The Industry Code for Visiting Residential Aged Care Homes during COVID-19 has been updated (20 November 2020). It's worth a read and will explain the restrictions and measure our own ACF's have put in place in preparation for the coming festive season for the safety of all. The Code creates a nationally consistent approach that ensures residents can receive visitors while minimising the risk of spreading COVID-19, and was released by 13 aged care... peak bodies and consumer advocacy organisations with industry and public consultation. https://www.cota.org.au//11/Industry-Code-File-20112020.pdf

06.01.2022 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR FAMILIES AND VISITORS from Bethel Aged Care Older people and those with underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of getting severe COVID-19 disease. Despite having no cases in any of our facilities, we have taken the step of implementing a policy of social distancing to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. This is on top of the stringent infection control policy that we have been implementing since the beginning of the crisis. ... Additional risk-minimization steps being taken within our ACFs are: No group activities No bus outings No large dining groups Visitors restricted to immediate family and medical professionals only. All visitors to complete a questionnaire upon entry. (Visitors may be refused entry if they are deemed an infection risk to residents.) Visiting limited to 15 minutes daily All non-essential appointments are being postponed or transferred to telehealth. This is a trying time for the entire community and we appreciate everyone's understanding as we implement these safety measures for our residents. Thank you, Robyn Turnbull Residential Operations Manager.
06.01.2022 Bethel is open for visitors again! The latest advice from the Public Health Network (27/08/2020) is that due to the low community transmission within the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie LGA’s we are able to open our doors to visitors again. This will once again be by appointment so that we can ensure that we have dedicated staff for the screening process. Make your booking time by calling 4047 5990. We look forward to seeing you!
