07.01.2022 Are you preparing to or bringing your horses back into work for 2021? How do you go about selecting the correct feed to nutritionally support them? While each horse is an individual and should be fed accordingly, there are three main things to look for when deciding on a feed no matter the horse you are feeding. 1. Is the feed made in an equine dedicated mill? Ensure that the brand of feed you choose makes their horse feed in an equine dedicated mill; meaning that no othe...r animal feed is made in or even passes through the same places that the horse feed does. The problem with a mixed species mill is that additives such as Urea and Monensin are often added into sheep, cattle, pig and poultry feed, which can be deadly to horses if they accidentally get into their feed. The best way to eliminate the risk of your horse becoming ill, is to select feed made in an equine dedicated mill. Tip: if you are unsure whether a feed is made in an equine dedicated mill, get in contact with the manufacturer. 2. Is the feed made to a set recipe or a least cost recipe? This will determine whether the ingredients of your feed of choice remain the same (set recipe) or if they will change bag to bag (least cost). While all requirements such as digestible energy (MJ) and the level of protein (%) will still be met with a least cost formulation the quality and digestibility of these components (particularly protein) will vary. For example, cottonseed meal and full fat soybean have a similar crude protein percentage but the amount of digestible lysine (an essential amino acid) contained within them varies greatly. A least cost formulation therefore, may affect the palatability of the feed, muscle development and recovery. Tip: Look up the ingredient list on the website or the back of the feed bag, if it is detailed and lists every ingredient it is made to a set recipe but if it is generic and broad it is made to a least cost recipe. 3. Is the feed made with quality protein sources? Every feed contains protein, but the quality of a protein is what matters most. The quality of a protein is determined by the number of essential amino acids (amino acids that the horse can’t make and needs to eat) and how digestible (how well the horse can absorb and use it) they are. Protein that is eaten is broken down to and absorbed as amino acids, which are then used as the building blocks for everything within the horse’s body including building muscles and bones. To ensure that your horses diet contains sufficient high-quality protein for topline, muscle development, strong bones, and plenty of milk (if they are a breeding) select a feed that contains high quality protein sources including extruded full fat soy, soybean meal, lupins and faba beans.
