22.01.2022 DOMS - Delayed onset muscle soreness This usually happens after doing some exercise that we aren't yet accustomed to or haven't done for a long time ... It's likely that you have experienced DOMS and if you have, like I did, thrown yourself back into your pre Covid-19 restrictions workout routine as soon as the gyms and yoga studios reopened, it was either recently or you are still in it (I am ) The main message I've got for you: Don't let it deter you from continuing your exercises (after some rest, obviously) Unfortunately, there's not much relief for it, let the body deal with it and wait it out It usually only takes a couple of days and the body conditioned itself to whatever you did Although, there are individual differences, DOMS can affect pretty much everyone, even elite athletes How painful it is depends on your personal pain threshold, which means it can be very painful for some and only mildly annoying for others One personal experience, which I don't recommend to anyone, is to break your toe. The pain from this small injury overrides any DOMS I felt just before I kicked my toe There's not much research on DOMS (probably because it's hardly more than inconvenient), but some things tend to make it worse 1 Lack of sleep 2 Vitamin D deficiency DOMS is still not very well understood and it's unclear what happens in the body As to remedies, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, they don't work In my own experience, and I get DOMS often, I find that once I start moving, it gets better. But I usually only do daily activities or a bit of walking, light yoga or cycling. What works for you?
