25.01.2022 As you read with your child, point out connections between the book and your child's real life. When reading "Dear Zoo" by Rod Campbell, for example, you could talk about visiting a zoo and what animals they have seen. Or ask them if they think an elephant would be too big for your house. Talk about any pets you have or would like to have. "Dear Zoo" is published by Pan Macmillan Australia.

25.01.2022 Our reading recommendation for today is "The Wonderful Wisdom of Ants" by Philip Bunting, published by Scholastic Australia. The answers to life's biggest questions can be found in the smallest places, once you're ready to look. Get set for an insightful (and hilarious!) peek into what we can learn from the world of the ant. This book is a factual book in picture book format, perfect for sharing with the smallest nature enthusiasts, with lots of information about ants that will interest all ages.

25.01.2022 Make paper place mats for each of your family members and use them at dinner time! Write the names of each family member on their mat. Encourage your child to draw and colour their mat and "write' their name.... Giving your child lots of opportunities to scribble, draw and pretend to write is preparing them to be writers later on.

24.01.2022 Understanding the idea of opposites helps a child to compare two different things or concepts and helps them to develop their descriptive vocabulary. Start simple, with concepts like slow and fast and up and down. Look for books that illustrate opposites. "Opposites" by Xavier Deneux, published by Chronicle Books is a great example of a book that can help explain opposites to young children with engaging, tactile illustrations.

24.01.2022 It's Sing-Along Tuesday! Count along with Ness as she shares "Ten Red Apples", a spoken action rhyme. https://youtu.be/feEu3J8z8Sk

24.01.2022 Help your toddler to arrange a few of their favourite toys in order from shortest to tallest. Sorting, grouping and categorising objects is an early maths concept and it also supports the development of early literacy skills. Being able to notice the differences and similarities between objects now will help your child later on when they need to tell the difference between letters. Describe the objects you sort and categorise as you put them in order.... Use different ways to sort them and talk about them how that changes the order or groups that you end up with. Sorting by colour is another good option for young children.

24.01.2022 Mark any upcoming special days, celebrations or events on a calendar. Count how many days until the next event. Look at the numbers on the calendar. Point out the number that is the same age as your child.... Look at the words on the calendar. Talk about what day it is today, what day yesterday was and what tomorrow is going to be.

23.01.2022 Black and white books are perfect to share with newborns because new babies cant yet see colours. The high contrast illustrations really do engage very young babies! "Night, Night" is an example of a black and white board book and is illustrated by Mojca Dolinar and published by Pat-a-Cake.

23.01.2022 "Environmental" print is the name given to print that appears around us in everyday life. Print is on street signs, shop signs, food labels and toy packaging and lots more! Noticing print and understanding that print has meaning are part of the early literacy skill of "Print Awareness" that a child needs to gain before they start to learn to read. Recognising logos and familiar signs helps children to "read" using clues in the environment and this experience will help a ch...ild when they are learning to read. To help your child notice print, ask them to look for the letter that their name starts with. Talk about how a capital letter might look different to a small letter and how different fonts might make the same letter look a bit different. Make the sound or sounds of the letter. Read signs aloud when you can both see them.

22.01.2022 Create a road map with your child and drive toy cars on it! You could draw or paint the map on paper or cardboard, use chalk on pavement outside, or make a road in the sand in a sandpit or at the beach.

22.01.2022 Make your Saturday Science colourful and mix some colours! You could mix paint colours together to make new colours, or point out to your child what happens when painting blue over yellow paint. Or drip some red, blue and yellow food colouring into different clear containers and then pour amounts into anoher container and observe what happens.... Here's a song to sing while you play with colours: https://youtu.be/pSV8oLKa5fs

21.01.2022 On your next visit to your local public library, look for books about Australian animals to borrow. Look in the J590's section of the Junior Non-Fiction section for factual books about animals. There are lots of stories about Australian animals. Here are two suggestions: one long-time favourite and one new one!... "Wombat Stew" is written by Marcia Vaughan and illustrated by Pamela Lofts. In this classic Australian picture book, a dingo catches a wombat and wants to cook him in a stew. But all the other bush animals have a plan to save their friend. They trick the dingo into using mud, feathers, flies, bugs and gumnuts in his wombat stew, and the result is-a stew the dingo will never forget! "Wombat Stew" is published by Scholastic Australia. "Not Cute" is written and illustrated by Phil Bunting. This book features Quokka who does not like being cute. Not one bit. This is the romping, stomping, chomping tale of one stubbornly adorable marsupial. "Not Cute" is published by Omnibus Books. Scholastic Australia

21.01.2022 Making animal noises is a fun way for children to practice making sounds that make up words. Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds that make up words is an early literacy skill called Phonological Awareness that a young child needs to develop to be ready to learn to read when they start school. The beginnings of developing that skill is to listen and make the sounds of animals and things.... Singing songs like "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" that incorporate animal sounds is a great way to have fun with animal noises. When you are reading a book about an animal, ask your child to make the sound of that animal. For more information about the Five Early Literacy Components, and how you can support your child to develop them, visit the Better Beginnings website: https://www.better-beginnings.com.au//reading-helps-kids-f

20.01.2022 Our reading suggestion today is "Found", written by Bruce Pascoe, illustrated by Charmaine Ledden-Lewis, published by Magabala Books. This gentle story, set in the rugged Australian bush, is about a small calf who becomes separated from his family. The little calf is alone and simply wants his mother, sisters and brothers. He can see other animals, and after running to the river, manages to ask some horses if they are his family. The calf's family have been taken away in the ...back of a noisy truck. So begins the little calf's journey to find his family. In "Found" we share the calfs point of view in an evocative story, accompanied by stunning illustrations. Bruce Pascoe has published widely in both adult and young adult literature. He has worked as a teacher, farmer, fisherman, barman, fencing contractor, lecturer, Aboriginal language researcher, archaeological site worker and editor. Bruce is a Yuin, Bunurong and Tasmanian man, and currently lives on his farm in Gippsland, Victoria. Charmaine Ledden-Lewis is a Blue Mountains artist, and descendant of the Bundjalung people. Her matriarchal lineage is a living legacy of the Stolen Generation. She is a vocal advocate for those who have had their history and culture stolen from them.

17.01.2022 Today is Indigenous Literacy Day, a national celebration of Indigenous language and literacy. To celebrate, read some of the stories from the The Walmajarri Language Stories Project. The Walmajarri Language Stories Project is a digitised collection of 65 stories from Kadjina Aboriginal Community in the Kimberley. The stories are written by adults and children in Walmajarri, Kriol, and English and can be accessed via the State Library of Western Australia catalogue: https://bi...t.ly/3lmHJM4 Choose one of the 65 books to read to your child Or you could use the pictures in the books to retell a story that you know or draw your own sand pictures to share a story with your child. Songs tell stories too. The Yakanarra Song Book, in Walmajarri and English, was launched on Indigenous Literacy Day in 2017. The collection includes songs about how the Walmajarri came to Yakanarra, their special places, the animals and birds and reptiles that live there, including the lungkura the blue-tongued lizard. #indigenousliteracy #readingopensdoors The Indigenous Literacy Foundation State Library of Western Australia Storylines

17.01.2022 Incorporate writing into your child's play. Encourage your child to experiment with lots of different media like crayons, pencils, chalk, or drawing in sand with their fingers or a stick. Let your child see how you use writing in your everyday life - writing a shopping list, signing a greeting card or drawing a picture.... Children as young as two will start to imitate the act of writing by making marks and pictures that represent their thoughts, feelings, experiences and observations. This is the earliest stages of learning to write!

14.01.2022 Offer your toddler or preschooler lots of chances to practice their scissor skills. We love this little rhyme to say to your child from Chandler Public Library: "Two fingers on the bottom and the thumb on top , Open the mouth and go chop, chop, chop!" ... Start with simple cutting tasks and work up to tricky shapes. If your child can't manage scissors yet, start them off by tearing paper or kneading playdough with their hands to build their muscle strength. Scissor skills take time to develop and young children need lots of chances to practice. While they are practicing using scissors, a child's coordination, hand strength and ability to focus are also developing. Remember, this is a tricky skill! 09.01.2022 At around three years of age, children are starting to be able to hear rhyme. They may be able to fill in the blank if you leave off the last word of a familiar poem or lyric from a song. Try playing the rhyming game below with your child. It doesn't matter if their response is not an actual word - if it rhymes, you will know that they understand how rhyming works. Being able to hear the smaller sounds in words is one of the early literacy skills that a child needs to prepare them for learning to read and write.
