23.01.2022 Where would you say you sit on this spectrum? Using statements or having thoughts such as having ‘ to earn your food’ ( you are not a circus animal) or having to over exercise to burn off your ‘slip up’ can be extremely detrimental to your mental health. It also adds negative connotations to exercise, and often leads to viewing exercise as a punishment or a chore- meaning we’ll resent having to do it, and be less likely to continue in the long term. ... Start to become aware of the dialogue you have with yourself, those around you and particularly pressure coming from advertisements and the media, it’s the very first step in becoming comfortable and happy in your own body.

16.01.2022 Here's a little festive reminder that exercise should NOT be used as a punishment for that second serve of Christmas Pavlova Instead, exercise ...because it makes you feel good. Exercise because it makes you happy. Exercise because it makes you feel stronger Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for something you ate. #ExerciseRight See more

14.01.2022 When’s the best time to start working on preventing osteoporosis?? The answer is..... Now!! Did you know that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture? And that 50% of people with a hip fracture will be unable to walk unassisted again? ... Our bone mass peaks around the age of 30- then it starts to slowly drop off, with a significant decrease just after menopause. Unless you do something about it!! Incorporating strength and high impact training before 30 means you’ll have a higher bone density to start with. After 30, and especially from about 50 onwards- strength and as high impact training as your health/joints allow, becomes vital. Balance training (to avoid the fall in the first place) is something most people don’t think about, until they’re on the ground! BetterLife provides comprehensive balance assessments, with balance and strength training programs for all ages and abilities. Classes will also be available once Covid allows

01.01.2022 Happy world menopause day!! The ‘average’ age of menopause is around 51 (although women can experience symptoms for many years before they reach menopause). A time when many women feel struck in the stress sandwich of the declining health, or loss of elderly parents, whilst also supporting their own children growing into young adults. Throw in shifting hormones, a lack of sleep (thanks hot flashes and anxiety), work commitments and a changing body- no wonder so many women... are feeling burnt out and exhausted! But it doesn’t have to be this way! Menopause can be a time for growth, a time for ‘life laundry’ and a time for a woman to come into her own. Stress and time management become crucial here. Make time for you, eat well and move in a way that makes you feel better, not worse!
