The program is set annually, with the total places available capped at a ceiling of 160,000 for 2020-21. The total program is broken down into the following streams: Skill Stream designed to improve the productive capacity of the economy and fill skill shortages in the labor market, including those in regional Australia. Character checks and sharing of personal information will be a requirement as part of the sponsorship application. 02.01.2022 Partner Visa Applications - Australian Budget 2020 Update The Department of Home Affairs is planning to introduce an English language requirement for partner visa applicants by mid to late 2021. The applicant as well as their sponsor will have to meet functional level English. One of the means of demonstrating functional English is by scoring at least 4.5 based on the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) of the IELTS, OR To have at least made r...easonable efforts to learn English by attending around 500 hours of free English classes at the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) centres. AMEP provides up to 510 hours of English language tuition to eligible migrants to help them learn foundation English language and settlement skills to enable them to participate socially and economically in Australian society. Partner visas are processed in two stages and the new language requirement would not need to be met until someone was applying for permanency, usually after living in Australia for two years on a temporary partner visa. The Department of Home Affairs is also temporarily boosting the number of partner visas available this financial year under the existing migration cap of 160,000 places.
