20.01.2022 WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK Back care for busy mums Caring for your back as a mum is important! The life of a mum involves a lot of bending, picking up and carrying no matter what age your children are. The risk of injury is increased with extra activities if appropriate care and strategies aren't in place.... So how do I care for my back? Here are some helpful tips: - Think about your lifting: always bend from your knees not from your waist. The muscles in our legs are very large, strong and practiced in moving our body up and down - Keep things close to your body when lifting - Engage your pelvic floor before and during an activity such as picking up your child - Exercises strengthening your core are beneficial in supporting the back Don't ignore new pain! If you need help or guidance in managing this book in for an assessment by calling 46326074 (Toowoomba) or 46622855 (Dalby)
19.01.2022 Women’s Health and Osteoporosis Did you know that we reach our peak bone mass by our 30’s? Women are at a greater risk for developing Osteoporosis due to a sharp decline in estrogen when we reach menopause. Estrogen has a very important role in protecting our bones as it inhibits bone resorption (breakdown) ... Heavy weights and impact exercise such as walking, jumping, skipping and resistance exercise will place a strain on the bone to help strengthen them! BMC offers the ONERO exercise program several times throughout the week. This program is specifically designed to prevent osteoporotic fractures by stimulating bone development and preventing falls in those at risk. If you’d like to know more about exercise for bone health, or the ONERO program feel free to give us a call on: Toowoomba: 07 4632 6074 Dalby: 07 4662 2855
19.01.2022 Physical Activity and Pregnancy As early as in utero, exposures to physical activity throughout pregnancy has short and long-term positive heath effects. As there are many changes that are occurring throughout pregnancy it is difficult to know what type of exercise you should be completing and if it is safe to exercise throughout the pregnancy. Exercise can be a great way to prevent excessive weight gain, improve energy/mood levels which can reduce throughout pregnancy, ...help with postural pain (Lower back pain or thoracic region), improve sleep, help prepare for labour and reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes (68 newly diagnosed women every day) or other possible complications. It is always recommended that you discuss with your GP or obstetrician before commencing a new exercise regime or continuing with exercise throughout your pregnancy. Once you have been cleared and would like to complete a safe and an effective program that is going to suite your needs an Exercise Physiologist is a great point of contact.

18.01.2022 Women's Health Week! 1 in 2 Australian women live with chronic disease. Are you completing enough physical activity to help manage your chronic disease risk factors? The exercise recommendations for Australian adults to maintain their health and reduce chronic disease risk are:... 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise (e.g. walking, swimming, cycling, or running) per week. This is just 30-45 minutes, 5 days per week and can also be accumulated in 10 minute blocks. 2-3 whole-body muscle strengthening exercise sessions per week. If you need to start by increasing your physical activity by just 10 minutes per day, consistency is most important. Ideas to increase your physical activity each day: 10-15 minutes walk before and after work. Walking your kids to school. Park further from work. 5-10 squats before you sit down each time. 10 push ups on the kitchen bench each meal time. 10 step ups on the bottom step at home before going inside. Also try to break up your sitting time as often as possible. Come and see our Exercise Physiologist's today for more ideas to increase your physical activity participation, managing chronic disease and reducing chronic disease risk factors.

10.01.2022 Women’s Health Week! Today we’re going to talk about DRAM or diastasis recti of the abdominal muscles which is a fancy term for when your outer abdominal muscles, i.e. your six pack separates, usually because of pregnancy. Did you know this affects ONE THIRD of pregnant women by the second trimester and it affects OVER HALF of women postpartum?... Why does this happen? The linea alba, which is the fibrous sheet between the 2 columns of your 6 pack, becomes more stretchy and soft because of the hormones released during pregnancy AND because of the natural mechanical stress from the baby inside the womb. Why is it important? The loss of stability of your outer abdominal muscles can affect your deep abdominal muscles (your core), which act as a corset for your back and the contents of your abdomen. It can contribute to low back, pubic pain and even incontinence. What to do about it? You should seek the help of a women’s health physiotherapist, who will be able to properly assess you and tailor their treatment to you. This can include: - Activity modification - Improving core stability - Improving pelvic floor activation - Compression garments If this affects you, don’t ignore it! You can get help today!

01.01.2022 NUTRITION AND WOMEN’S HEALTH: IRON Iron is an important mineral that has various functions in the body, including the production of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body through the blood. If inadequate iron is consumed through the diet, this may result in iron deficiency, or in low levels of haemoglobin (anaemia). Symptoms include unexplained fatigue or a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and increased risk of infection ... Women may be at higher risk of iron-deficiency anaemia due to higher losses through menstruation, or if pregnant, breastfeeding or have recently given birth. If you suspect you may be low in iron, it is best to discuss this with your GP and check on a blood test, however here a few tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of the iron in your food: Consume a range of iron-rich foods every day these include: red meat, poultry, legumes and green leafy vegetables Consume a source of vitamin C with your plant-based iron sources: - Food sources of vitamin C: citrus fruits, strawberries, tomato, broccoli Avoid consuming tea or coffee at the same time as iron-rich foods tea and coffee block the absorption of iron, so consume these away from your meals If you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency and would like some individualised advice on increasing your iron intake, please feel free to give us a call and book in for a consultation with our Accredited Practising Dietitian on: Toowoomba: 07 4632 6074 Dalby: 07 4662 2855 Image credit: stock.adobe
