04.01.2022 T I C K S E A S O N Paralysis tick season is well and truly here! Paralysis tick’s are always active in Mackay and surroundings, however over the past few weeks we have seen an increasing number of paralysis tick cases. There are several species of tick that can be found on your animals, however only one (Ixodes holocyclus) causes paralysis. This tick is typically pale in colour and all legs are situated towards the front of their body. Once attached a paralysis tick ...will suck the animal's blood, and in the process secretes saliva containing toxins. The signs and symptoms of tick paralysis generally develop 2-3 days after the tick attaches. They include: - Hind limb weakness - A change in the tone of the bark or meow - Coughing, gagging, vomiting and retching - Rapid or difficult breathing. - Difficulty blinking. It is important to seek treatment as soon as possible if your pet shows symptoms of tick paralysis, or if you find a tick on your animal. While waiting for veterinary treatment keep your animal calm and comfortable, search for and remove any ticks that have been found and avoid offering food or water as they may not be able to swallow effectively. Prevention is better than cure so it is important that pets in our area are protected against paralysis ticks. There are several products available that can aid in the prevention of paralysis ticks, including Bravecto and Nexgard. Please seek advice prior to using prevention products, as lots of products that can be used on dogs are toxic to cats. If you have any questions or concerns about tick paralysis and it's prevention please talk to your veterinarian today
