24.01.2022 Plastic Free July has rolled around again ... we will be endeavoring to reduce our waste even more. Some tips I learned from last year : if you go to your local butcher they are often more than happy to just wrap your meat in the paper or place in your CLEAN containers (the container thing may have changed with the COVID situation however). Purchasing dry goods from a bulk supplier reduces lots of little plastic packets. Being a little prepared eg taking a reusable water bott...le with you on car rides etc saves a lot of single use plastic bottles. Farmers markets are great to get fruit and veg without the plastic. If you have a problem with the ridiculous, superfluous packaging on stuff at the supermarket .... protest by leaving it on the shelf!! I do this with mushrooms in those stupid plastic boxes- I rip off the barcode on the clingfilm and tip the mushrooms into a paper bag. I’ve also been known to do this with apples in those plastic tubs too (my kids hate shopping with me!) but it’s my personal protest!! And if the staff or other customers dare to raise an eyebrow I’ve reached the ripe old age where I’m happy to voice my opinion about excess use of plastic 9/10 times they agree with me! 18.01.2022 Garlic scapes! Garlic scapes are the immature flower heads of garlic. They need to be removed as, if allowed to mature, they’d steal valuable energy from the garlic bulb. 13.01.2022 Sad day Saturday... a new herd of cattle broke past the fences protecting the beehives and we arrived to this ... beehive carnage. The bees were still hanging around so I put all hives back together in the hope they’ll recover ... which led to the second pic! The bees were very agitated and I couldn’t get my smoker going and I was stung multiple times through my suit! This led to my first bee induced anaphylactic reaction and an emergency hospital admission. Thank goodness hubby got me straight to hospital as soon as my symptoms started. Big love to all the Drs and nurses who looked after me! I am fine now but shall avoid the bees until I can get to an immunologist! #baddayonthefarm #beeallergy #rollingwiththepunches #skatinggoosefarm

11.01.2022 Today is a really wintery day with squalls of heavy showers rolling through regularly. And I was thinking about how I was going to enjoy a nice hot bowl of soup. And then I started thinking about the chooks .... I opened their coop up so they had the option to stay inside or out in the rain (I know where I’d be!) many are out foraging in the rain and seem to be loving it. I wondered if they’d like a hot lunch too ... so I did some reading and came up with a pretty nice chook ...porridge. Rolled oats with a few eggs scrambled in for extra protein, some black sunflower seeds for extra healthful oils, a sad, bruised apple chopped up, some cinnamon(apparently good for their respiratory system) and a little cayenne pepper to keep them warm .... apparently they don’t register the heat on their chooky tongues! Anyway, they seemed to love it ... and I feel happy that they’ve had a hot meal to warm them on a cold day. 07.01.2022 In my quest to reduce our use of single use plastics I’ve embraced the shampoo and conditioner bar. I have to admit I was worried I’d end up with hair like cardboard! I’ve also been searching for an alternative to all those ridiculous little plastic bottles of toiletries used in the hotel industry. There’s no rubbish collection at the farm so all our waste becomes our problem to dispose of. This certainly brings a whole new awareness about how our waste is handled. Anyhoo... after much searching and reading of testimonials I’ve come across @stjamessupplyco I have to say I am loving their shampoo and conditioner! My hair feels super clean without being stripped, has volume without the frizz and is super shiny! Well done to this WA family owned business and welcome to Skating Goose Farm!

03.01.2022 Offsetting our carbon footprint. We planted around 400 native trees and shrubs this weekend - quite a job but very rewarding! Did you know it takes approx 1125 trees to offset an average individuals carbon footprint? With all the trees planted on the farm in the last 3 years I think we are almost there but we are a family of 5 so a few more to go!
