04.01.2022 I went around Australia with my sister Hilde, and the weirdest thing started happening... She’d disappear and return hours, sometimes a day later, with stories.... Extraordinary tales, collected from complete strangers. Every single time, she returned changed by what she’d learnt. On those nights, I could see a computer screen glowing through her tent in the dark, often after 15 hour fundraising shifts, and her tented glow remained until every detail, every act of courage and kindness, was recorded. These stories just came out of her. She couldn’t keep them inside, not a chance. It was like Hilde was becoming some sort of weird hero-magnet. I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to see those pages. Not just me, our whole road crew greatly looked forward to her return from these expeditions. We loved hearing her read these stories to us. They left us all inspired. Our Hilde was onto something special. I started hero-hunting on the side, but I was a bit scared to disrupt Hilde’s quest. I didn’t want to slow her down, but I was desperate to tap into her strange and magical ability to find the best examples of humankind. Hilde didn’t miss. It happened every time. Did she have the magic touch, or were heroes everywhere to be found? I asked Hilde how she did it. She told me to look for the people without tabs on themselves, coz real heroes don’t wear capes. Hilde told me to look past the social butterflies, to look for the person not saying much; to look for the faces with kind lines and warm eyes. For those careful with opinions, at peace with themselves and comfortable in their surroundings. And just like that, I was officially thrust into the hero-spotting business! It was constantly inspiring, and I learnt, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there are heroes everywhere. So, without too much fuss at all, Hilde and I have curated a magnificent array of these unsung heroes into one book for you. It’s called ‘Heroes Next Door’. It’s about everyday Aussies doing extraordinary things in the face of adversity. I know you’ll be changed by this, like me and my sister were. That much I can promise.
