25.01.2022 Sunday. After yesterday's harvest I went to the Byford site better prepared to take honey. I enlisted the help of Bee Buddy John and just as well too. The honey supers were full on all 3 hives. I had no hope of lifting the boxes off by myself. I extracted 35 kilos of honey and saved a frame for come honey. This has been an exhausting but rewarding weekend.

25.01.2022 The latest horizontal hive now complete. Built with raw timber I didn’t have the heart to paint it. Finished off with several coats of Lanotec.

25.01.2022 Three of the five Slovenian hives are now installed in the bee house. I have about a month to make 160 frames.

25.01.2022 I just had to show everyone the latest bee box. This is the solution to a "fourth " box. The main hive body is the equivalent to 3 boxes. So if your bees suddenly hit a hot spot and are filling up the frames quicker than you can extract, then add another super. If you have a need to inspect under that super, simply slide it along the box. I will let you know how that idea works if I need to use this method.

24.01.2022 6.6 kilos of perfectly rendered wax. The new wax melter is truly amazing

24.01.2022 Making Wax Sheets - My new toy

24.01.2022 This week I built a horizontal hive using 4 slabs of timber. This hive is equivalent to 3 x 10 frame boxes. Specifically made for young Timothy who already has successfully kept his bees in a traditional langstroth vertical 10 frame hive.

24.01.2022 Last night we took the girls down to Dwellingup for the jarrah. Here’s hoping we get the top grade nectar. The trailer traveled very well. Unfortunately a big roo ran into the side of the trailer. No damage there but I wonder about the roo. He hobbled off into the scrub somewhere.

23.01.2022 I have built a duplicate of the leaf hive Francois Huber used for his research of bees. His experiments and research papers forms the foundation of what we know about bees today. With this hive structure he could observe both sides of every frame with minimal disturbance to the bees.

22.01.2022 An amazing day today. I wasn’t sure if it was a total fire ban so I chose to work the AZ hives because they are inside a bee house. I proceeded with smoker lit and gave the first hive a puff. All the bees were soooo calm I forgot about the smoker and got on with the job. With horizontal hives on the same site I decided to take a chance and inspect those. I expected trouble as I didn’t have any sugar water spray. They were all so calm I didn’t even get one sting.

22.01.2022 Such a lot of honeycombe in the wall. I used the wax press (Wine press) to remove the honey. 10 kilos in all

22.01.2022 Spring has stepped up activity at the front door. Time to give the girls a bigger opening. Picture compliments of expert photographer Mary Linder.

21.01.2022 Pumpkin from Bob’s veggie patch. This will go well with beef stroganoff.

21.01.2022 Spring inspections and will. subsequent cleanup resulted in excess wax. Rendering wax in the kitchen would upset most wives but since I am the wife I can get away with it. I’m quite sure If the boot was on the other foot I wouldn’t put up with it .

20.01.2022 All set for the Bee Frame Assembly workshop tomorrow. Morning tea is honey cake. Don’t you wish you were attending?

20.01.2022 Finished adding dowel to the top bars. My good friend Jack made this jig for me when I first started beekeeping. Sinc then another good friend modified it.

19.01.2022 HONEY THEIF IN BEDFORDALE! To the morons who stole several frames of honey from my horizontal hives. You took the honey that I left for the bees to get them through till the marri flow starts in January. Those hives will struggle to survive. I sincerely hope the honey makes you sick

19.01.2022 Just a few weeks after a massive deadout , Most likely poison, Trisha’s horizontal hive was decimated by wax moth. I have spent the last 3 days cleaning up the frames. Three didn’t make the grade and went to the bin. Some wax was salvaged. Now it’s just 48 hours in the freezer to be sure no eggs are hidden in the joints.

18.01.2022 Quickest extraction I have ever done

18.01.2022 Success! 6kilos of clean wax. The kitchen has recovered

17.01.2022 Don’t like the colour? Bunnings miss tint was REALLY cheap so I am not fussy. Look out Dave. If you stand still you will be painted pink too.

17.01.2022 The new hutch is finished and ready to go up to the apiary. Now to install some AZ hives and leave some room for mini queen mating boxes.

17.01.2022 1kilo honey $16. Squeezy bottle of honey 475gr. $10. Don’t miss out. Mother’s Day is just around the corner.

16.01.2022 Finally! I have been working on this project for weeks. My extra large solar wax melter. 1500mm long. The glass is actually a recycled shower screen. I wanted to make it so that I didn’t have to lift up the glass. With this design the tray holding the wax will drop down for loading. The glass remains safely stationary.

16.01.2022 I went through a Kenyan top bar hive today. All the fresh comb was curved across to the next comb at one end. I had to break off the end to encourage straight comb. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

16.01.2022 The prodigal dog has been returned. Some very kind person found him and cared enough to take him to the vet. We just picked him up. I can’t say thanks enough to this dog lover. Dave is forever grateful. If you pm me I have sweet rewards for you. Thanks Bev

16.01.2022 Today I made a display stand for my daughter in law. This is to go on her table for direct serving for breakfast. Each can scrape their own honey.

16.01.2022 Another successful workshop today. Everyone completed their projects which included two who built a horizontal hive each. The next event is in 4 weeks time.

15.01.2022 The last 3 extractions for the season so far. Who would have thought there could be such a difference.

15.01.2022 Another run of nuc boxes. 5 frame nuc 12 ply. $40 each.

15.01.2022 Exotic afternoon tea. Treat Mum with this platter of raw honeycomb cheese and crackers. Caviar for beekeepers.

14.01.2022 On Thursday I took Bees to East Maddington primary school. The children were well informed and asked intelligent questions. I made a 5 frame nuc box with Perspex sides and a tube to a Perspex box where I placed a bunch of lavender. The children thoroughly enjoyed trying the honeycomb.

14.01.2022 I love to do school incursions. Children are always fascinated with the live bee display. Constantly Asking many questions and thoroughly enjoying tasting the honeycomb.

13.01.2022 Creamed honey now available in limited supply. Pm me and I can deliver within a reasonable distance from the Armadale area. $12 a tub (500 grams)

13.01.2022 Another horizontal hive completed and arrived at the new Home in Denmark

13.01.2022 Wishful thinking? Or just being prepared. Either way I am almost ready with honey supers. Bring it on girls.

13.01.2022 Just waxing up some top bars. Taking no chances this year and added dowel to the sides of the bars to help take the weight of the honey.

13.01.2022 My 12 year old grandson. Budding bee keeper. Inspecting his hive

13.01.2022 I have been getting questions regarding feeding the bees. I don’t like to feed sugar water if I can help it. I prefer to use Pro-Sweet from Beewize. The burst of energy is obvious the next day. The feeder board has ventilation holes in each corner and one or two holes for the jar to sit in. Insulation goes on top as the bees will otherwise chew it. Then another super over that then the lid. This sup is your honey super when the flow starts.

12.01.2022 The Marri has started to flower in Bedfordale! Flowering high up on the tree top with promising buds all over. I’m hoping it continues long enough to fill up winter supplies.

12.01.2022 I declare Trisha’s hive fully repaired and fitted out with all improvements/updates. All that’s left of the original hive is the four sides.

12.01.2022 The afternoon session was also productive. Horizontal hives we’re completed and ready for a roof cover. The boys will have fun with the painting.

11.01.2022 I made another top bar hive using the dimensions from Adrian Lodice design. I can certainly see the benefits of wide and shallow. Our summer heat is just too much for the deeper design. The weight of a comb full of honey has caused collapse in my previous TBHives.

11.01.2022 One batch of liquid gold is packaged and ready for sale. 1 kilo $16. Squeezy bottle approximately 460mils $9. Ross Rounds fresh honeycomb in its container $12.

10.01.2022 HONEY THIEF IN BEDFORDALE! To the morons who stole several frames of honey from my horizontal hives. You took the honey that I left for the bees to get them through till the marri flow starts in January. Those hives will struggle to survive. I sincerely hope the honey makes you sick

10.01.2022 Our daughter Trish wanted a bee hive to match her house. Job done. Delivery tomorrow afternoon.

10.01.2022 We dropped off a few more hives today. The rain was great for locking up the bees but not so good when it came to unloading. The Jarrah has started and we are hopeful for a good flow.

09.01.2022 There's nothing like fresh honeycomb. Dave just had to lick the plate and his fingers. Jacinta helped spin the honey so she deserves a chunk of honeycomb too.

08.01.2022 Helping out some newby beekeepers.

08.01.2022 Two shaker boxes ready to paint. A good afternoon’s work

08.01.2022 Today was a very busy day. I took a display hive and bee equipment to an Early Learning Centre. The children were very excited to watch the bees. Granddaughter Jacinta assisted explaining the way the hive works. Finally the little ones were able to scrape honey from the honeycomb and have a taste.

06.01.2022 Free biosecurity course for Aussie beekeepers The Biosecurity for Beekeepers online course is now free for all Australian beekeepers, increasing the accessibility of training which will help protect the honey bee industry from pests and diseases. Trevor Weatherhead, Chair of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC), said the course was previously only free for commercial beekeepers who had 50 or more hives with others having to pay a small fee.... AHBIC funding allows the course to be accessed at no cost to commercial beekeepers and now Australian state and territory governments have contributed to make the course free to all beekeepers, said Trevor This is a great step towards improving bee biosecurity standards across Australia which will help ensure the industry’s sustainability into the future. Plant Health Australia (PHA) CEO Sarah Corcoran said the course has also been refreshed to ensure it remains current and relevant. The course was updated by the PHA training team with advice and input from AHBIC, state bee biosecurity officers and other industry representatives, said Sarah. The course, which takes about 90 minutes to complete, covers: checking your hives for pests and diseases identifying exotic and established pests and diseases of honey bees taking action after finding a serious pest or disease in your hives minimising the impact of pests and diseases on your hives. On successful completion of the course you receive a certificate which demonstrates compliance with the Australian Honey Bee Biosecurity Code of Practice. Completing an approved pest and disease management course is a requirement of the Code for all beekeepers with 50 or more hives and this course is one way to meet that requirement. Beekeepers can also speak to their local Bee Biosecurity Officer about alternative options. The Biosecurity for Beekeepers course is delivered by PHA through funding from state and territory governments and AHBIC. The original development of the course was funded by AgriFutures Australia. 06.01.2022 This is what 100 frames assembled looks like. And only one cup of tea. The next step won’t be so fast.

05.01.2022 Well I’m ready for the honey flow. Bring it on Mother Nature!

05.01.2022 I could never have managed to extract in one afternoon 120 kilos of honey with my equipment. Helping Lindsay is helping me too.

05.01.2022 Today was a family affair with 4 of our grandchildren helping with the honey extraction

05.01.2022 I used all the offcuts and made a mini. A 6 bar top bar nuc. I think I will set it up for a swarm trap.

04.01.2022 Young couple from Germany wanted to see a flow hive in action. I took them up to Byford and extracted 12 kilos. Only 3 weeks ago I had extracted 8 kilos from the same hive. Not bad.

03.01.2022 I have just extracted honey from Arthur River. Limited supply of Tagaste honey. It's light, sweet, and has floral tones. Entirely different to any I have tasted. There won't be any more until this time next year. Get in quickly.

03.01.2022 The finishing touches all done on my queen mini mating boxes. Ready for spring.

03.01.2022 IT’S A GIRL! And I’m a great grandmother! Anaya Grace finally arrived after four days of indecision.

03.01.2022 Saturday's workshop was a success. I think everyone had a great day and went away with more than expected.

02.01.2022 Bee Frame Assembly Workshop There are still some places available for the next workshop on Saturday 19th September. Go to www.eventbrite.com and search for Bee Frame Assembly Workshop. We are now offering the assembly of a horizontal hive as an option. Check it out before it's too late.

02.01.2022 Just finished a top bar nuc. Made to order to match the top bars. If you want a nuc just bring me your follower board and 6 top bars and I will make you a nuc box ready for spring.

01.01.2022 Such a messy job, but 11 kilos of honey was worth it

01.01.2022 A very successful workshop today. Everyone finished their projects. Each person made their own wiring jig and assembled 10 frames. Finally frames were finished off with wiring and wax.

01.01.2022 Here's where the flow really began
