23.01.2022 : : Sat mornings I usually do a PT virtual session in our gym but last night I decided I would give it a miss and go for a run instead as this week Ive been really wanting to spend more time out in the fresh air & sun . BREAKFAST - Avocado or natural peanut butter on wholegrain toast, Toasted cheese & tomato wholegrain sandwich, Eggs (scrambled, omelettes, boiled, poached) with grilled/stir fry veggies, smoothie or yoghurt with fruit & untoasted granola/muesli, oats, weetbix, baked beans & wilted spinach on wholegrain toast or chia puddings. LUNCHES - Cut up vegetables - (capsicum, carrot, cucumber) sugar bean snaps, baby tomatoes, cheese, rice or wholegrain crackers, dips (hommus, tzaziki or avocado are great options), fresh fruit, boiled eggs, yoghurt, wholegrain cheese, tuna and salad sandwich/wraps or pita, lentil and vegetable soups, chickpea and tuna or shredded chicken breast, avocado salad with wholegrain toast, rice-paper or sushi rolls, oven baked zucchini and vegetable patties, homemade meatballs, left over cold cooked meats (like chicken breast) with mixed salad leaves or veggies. Start your day with berries added to your breakfast [ie rolled oats / weetbix] Enjoy a smoothie with berries [see recipe below - one of my favs!] Have some berries with nuts (good fats!!) as a healthy snack or mix them in with some plain or coconut yoghurt and chia seeds Banana and Berry Smoothie: Ingredients: 1 cup Almond milk 1/2 banana 1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen 1/2 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen (add 1 cup ice if not frozen fruit) Directions: Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. 07.01.2022 Greens with the supergrain Q U I N O A One of my fav healthy grains is Quinoa!! Quinoa is gluten free and is packed with so many NUTRIENTS!!... It has more than 50% more fibre and protein than brown rice Try this quick side vegetable to accompany fish, poultry or lean red meat. Ingredients: 1 bunch Brocollini Some Green beans Garlic Low sodium soy sauce 1 tbs coriander 1/2 cup dry quinoa Method: Heat wok with 1 tsp sesame oil Once heated, add garlic Toss in mixed green veggies with a little water Stir fry with a splash (1 tbs) low sodium soy sauce & cracked pepper Reduce heat, leave for 5 mins so veggies still remain firm Toss through coriander and serve Quinoa - Boil 1/2 cup quinoa with 1 cup water - (or 1 cup to 2 cups water to have left over quinoa for another dish). Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer with lid on for 15mins. Then remove from heat and set aside for 10 minutes with lid still on. Fluff with fork and ready Place green veggies with juice on a serving plate and add quinoa. Toss through and serve. When reading FOOD LABELS remember that conversionalong with the following : Foods that have between 5gms and 15gms of sugar per 100gms Foods that have 5gms or less per 100gms or 2.5gms or less per 100ml The recommended maximum intake of sugar per day is 9 tsps for Men and 6 tsp for Women [ this includes the already added sugars in the foods youre consuming ] Currently the WHO reports were consuming approx 20tsps! Read the INGREDIENTS on the Food Label and choose foods with natural occurring sugars like fresh fruits and natural dairy products. : : Nutritional labels do not differentiate between natural sugars and added sugars so thats why reading the ingredients is important. : : What I do is look at the sugar content in grams, then look at the ingredients to see where the sugar content is coming from! : : Consider these alternatives Honey Maple Syrup Dates pulsed/puréed Unsweetened Apple sauce or stewed apples Goji berries Cranberries Vanilla essence or extract Vanilla bean Coconut sugar Raw sugar : : If a recipe says add 1/2 cup of sugar - PUT lessss or use one of the alternatives.
