14.01.2022 A study just out from the University of Newcastle has found we are ingesting a teaspoon of microplastics on average every week. That's equivalent to a credit c...ard's worth of plastic! The biggest source is tap and bottled water, with authors alarmingly stating that there are no filtration systems that can filter out those sub-micron phase particles. The implications for our health are not yet fully elucidated but include enhanced inflammatory responses, disruption of the gut microbiome, cellular proliferation and necrosis, alterations of endogenous metabolites, genotoxicity, oxidative stress, inhibition of nutrient absorption, and altered reproduction processes. Nanoplastic size and hydrophobicity enables their passage through the placenta and blood-brain barrier. 03.01.2022 I was so hippie (how hippie were you, Aviva?) that I started sewing my own homemade cotton pads in my teens - back in 1981 - and used those for years before org...anic commercial pads and tampons hit the shelves. My husband - well, he was so crunchy that he’d rinse ‘my pads bucket’ out for me! (Awww). Eventually I used a combo of my own and purchased organic pads/tampons - so when I had to be out and about (hospital shifts, overnight births), I had the convenience of disposable options. Now there are so many wonderful options to choose from - from beautiful flannel pads to period panties to diva cups to organic disposable pads and tampons. All have pros and cons depending on your preferences, needs, and flow. But no matter what - going organic for period products is really important to your health - and for the health of our planet. Here’s why... Tampons and pads, fall under the FDA category medical devices which are subject to a lower standard of scrutiny than even cosmetics and aren’t monitored for ingredient safety. But they are going into our vaginas, which are full of blood vessels and lymph glands, that allow for the direct absorption of chemicals into your circulatory system.
