21.01.2022 Friday, 16 October 2020 AUSTRALIA’S FIRST SIKH TEMPLE LISTED ON THE STATE HERITAGE REGISTER Australia’s original First Sikh Temple has been listed on the State Heritage Register by the NSW government, highlighting its importance in the state’s cultural history.... The Sikh place of worship, known as Gurdwara, has been the social and religious heartbeat of the state’s Sikh community since its construction in 1968, said the NSW Minister for Heritage, the Hon Don Harwin MLC. The First Sikh Temple, located in Woolgoolga on the beautiful mid north coast, is of great significance to the cultural history of NSW as it demonstrates the migration and permanent settlement of the Sikh community in our state, Minister Harwin said today. The first Gurdwara building, a longstanding centre for worship, ceremony, gathering and participation, now shares its site and use with the new Gurdwara, built in a traditional Sikh architectural style with its magnificent gold and white roof domes, which opened in 2019. Together, these buildings are of profound importance to the Sikh community, and it is from these buildings, the old and the new, from which the Sikh community give so generously to their wider community, Mr Harwin said. Acting Minister for Multiculturalism Geoff Lee said the heritage-listing of The First Sikh Temple is wonderful for the entire Sikh community in NSW. As NSW residents were overcome by the devastation of recent fires and floods our generous Sikh community were there to offer their unwavering help and assistance, Minister Lee said. This listing is symbolic of NSW’s wonderfully diverse and inclusive multicultural communities. Member for Coffs Harbour, Gurmesh Singh, Australia’s first Sikh member of Parliament, said his electorate is a diverse and thriving region. Receiving heritage listing for the temple is very significant for our region, and a proud moment for Australia’s Sikh community, he said. Minister Harwin said he was delighted to announce the temple’s entry on the Register. It is important to acknowledge the breadth of NSW’s historical story and the inclusion of this temple will be the first listing for the Sikh faith on NSW’s pre-eminent heritage register. Listing will ensure that the significance of The First Sikh Temple will continue to be recognised and protected for future generations. Further information on the state heritage listing of The First Sikh Temple is available at www.heritage.nsw.gov.au MEDIA: Duncan McNab | Minister Harwin | 0424 282 091

19.01.2022 Masks to be mandatory in Melbourne coronavirus hotspots as Victoria extends state of emergency People who are out of the house and not wearing a mask can be fined $200 by police, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says face masks will become mandatory in public for everyone living in the coronavirus hotspots of Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire. Mr Andrews announced the new restrictions on Sunday morning, as the state recorded 363 new cor...onavirus infections as well as three further deaths. It will become mandatory from 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July, Mr Andrews said People who are out of the house and not wearing a mask can be fined $200 by police, he added, while urging residents to adopt a "commonsense" approach. "Now, commonsense will guide this," Mr Andrews said. "If you're out running, part of your daily exercise, then it may not be practical to wear the mask while you are running. But you should bring the mask with you and you should wear it before and after you have gone for your run. "There'll be some other environments, for instance, where you're going into a bank, when you would need to take your mask off." Health Minister Jenny Mikakos on Sunday also announced that Victoria would be extending its current state of emergency until 11.59pm on 16 August. "That decision has been made acting on the advice of the chief health officer, given that we continue to see rising case numbers, increasing numbers of people being hospitalised and sadly also increasing fatalities," she told reporters. Ms Mikakos urged people to improvise if they were unable to secure an appropriate mask in time. "Don't be stressed or anxious if you cannot get your hands on a top-tier surgical mask, you can make one yourself," she said. "You can use a scarf, you can use a bandanna, something is better than nothing." Chief health officer Brett Sutton described Victoria's situation as a "numbers rollercoaster". Residents in metropolitan Melbourne are subject to stay-at-home orders and can only leave home for essential work, study, exercise or care responsibilities. People are also advised to wear masks in public. People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your states restrictions on gathering limits. 19.01.2022 21 October 2020 PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT BATHURST NSW Health is tonight calling on anyone who attended the Bathurst 1000 motor race on the weekend as well as residents of Bathurst with any symptoms that could signal COVID-19 to get tested as soon as possible after remnants of the COVID-19 virus were detected in raw sewage in the area today.... The sample comprises wastewater from over the past weekend, and could indicate current or a previous infection in someone who attended or worked at the Bathurst 1000 motor race, a visitor to Bathurst, or even a local resident. Visitors to and residents of Bathurst must be aware of any symptoms of illness, and immediately isolate and get tested should even the mildest of symptoms appear that you think might just be a cold. Symptoms like a runny nose or scratchy throat, cough, tiredness, fever or other symptoms could be COVID-19. After testing, you must remain in isolation until a negative result is received. NSW Health is urgently undertaking investigations, which include reviewing lists of all those known to have had the virus who attended or worked at the race. The only way to find new cases and prevent further transmission is to increase testing. There are more than 300 COVID-19 testing locations across NSW. To find your nearest clinic visit https://www.nsw.gov.au//how-to-protect-yourself-an/clinics or contact your GP. Sewage testing for molecular markers of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, started in July, adding another tool in the fight against the global pandemic. There is no evidence COVID-19 is transmitted via wastewater systems. This message is intended for the addressee named and may contain confidential information. 13.01.2022 Saturday, 17 October 2020 FOREIGN WORKERS PILOT PROGRAM ENDORSED TO HELP FILL LABOUR SHORTAGE The NSW Government has today provided conditional approval for more than 350 skilled workers to arrive from Fiji to help fill a labour shortage in the State’s abattoirs.... Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said the government had developed the initiative as a pilot program under the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) and was now seeking necessary approvals from the Commonwealth Government. This is a common-sense solution to minimise disruption to supply chains and an important step towards securing the State’s food supply, Mr Marshall said. We have worked closely with industry to understand what labour is required during these challenging times, and this pilot presents an important first step in securing critical workers. The pilot proposes to charter more than 350 experienced workers from Fiji to work at approved abattoirs in NSW. Mr Marshall said that these arrivals would not be considered part of the airport cap and that workers would be required to undergo the same stringent quarantine requirements as all other international arrivals, in line with existing public health orders. We would never introduce a risk into the State, and every worker entering the country under this program will go through strict quarantine and testing before being allowed to travel into our regional communities, Mr Marshall said. We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the State’s agricultural workforce and that’s why we have already taken steps to minimise disruptions, including adopting the National Agricultural Workers Code and launching the Help Harvest NSW portal to connect domestic labour supply with demand. Subject to relevant Commonwealth approvals, this positive outcome would be achieved in just one month’s time, with the first charter flight expected to take off in mid-November. The charter flights and quarantine arrangements would be funded by industry. MEDIA: Connor McGoverne | 0408 185 304

10.01.2022 Media release 14 July 2020 We unequivocally condemn racism The Victorian Multicultural Commission unequivocally condemns racism and commits to taking a leadership role in addressing racism in Victoria. We unequivocally condemn all forms of racism, vilification or discrimination directed at someone because of their colour, ethnicity, faith or national origin. ... We condemn all forms of racism or vilification against First Nations people. We condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or any form of racism or vilification against Asian communities, African communities or people of colour. Racism hurts our whole society and we must do better in opposing it. Meaningful change will only happen when people of all backgrounds come together in solidarity and move from being passive or neutral to becoming actively anti-racist. But at this pivotal moment in our history, we believe that change is possible. We recognise that if we are to tackle racism, we need to start by listening to the truth about our nations history and addressing the injustices experienced by First Nations People. While we recognise the role of legislation in holding perpetrators to account and await the outcomes of the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Anti Vilification Protections, we know that legislation alone is not enough to change our society. Addressing systemic and individual racism will take a collective and sustained effort by all of us. We commit to developing an anti-racism engagement strategy that is informed by communities and responsive to the dynamic narrative that is changing here in Australia. We will create safe spaces for honest conversations. We will listen and ensure that diverse voices are heard. We will advocate for equity and mobilise others to join us in taking action. We will also look within our own diverse organisation and hold ourselves accountable to the same standards we expect of others. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to engage widely and deeply with Victorians to inform our strategy, including through community conversations and forums. Our position has been informed by community roundtable discussions, as well as a number of conversations with community leaders. 09.01.2022 PRIME MINISTER MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER INDEPENDENCE DAY OF INDIA 2020 As a longstanding friend of India, Australia joins wholeheartedly in its celebration of independence and extends our warm congratulations to the people of India. While this years celebrations will be different and many of the traditional gatherings will not take place, we can all draw strength from the values that our countries share. As I said during the visit to Australia of President Kovind: Ou...r cultures might be different, but we believe in similar things. We believe of the supremacy of the ballot-box in our national life; in the rule of law; in institutions that safeguard rights; and the responsibility of free people to build a better world. It is because of our shared values, interests and objectives that Prime Minister Modi and I announced the historic elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in June this year. Our partnership is geared for the common good of our region and the global community, and this will be critical as we work to overcome the health, social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The deep friendship between Australia and India is about more than trade and diplomacy. Founded on bharosa (trust) and samman (respect) it is a friendship with depth, and marked by democracy, defence cooperation, diaspora and dosti (mateship). It was Australias second Prime Minister Alfred Deakin who best expressed the hope we have for our bilateral relationship when he wrote the distance which separates us...is being steadily diminished between us, year by year. And so it is to this day. We know people are the living bridge between our countries: as students; skilled workers; or joining family, people of Indian heritage have enriched this country. India is now our biggest source of migrants and their presence has contributed to Australia becoming the most successful multicultural nation on earth. May the ties between our countries continue to deepen. I wish you all a Happy Independence Day! The Hon Scott Morrison MP Prime Minister of Australia August 2020

08.01.2022 Friday, 16 October 2020 FREE LEGAL HELP FOR COVID IMPACTED COMMUNITIES Victim-survivors of domestic and family violence and those who have been impacted by COVID-19 will benefit from new funding to the community legal assistance sector.... Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Mark Speakman today announced the allocation of $5.43 million in Commonwealth funding to community legal centres delivering frontline services to people experiencing disadvantage and discrimination. The dual global health and economic crises have created unprecedented demand for community legal services. This funding will see more free legal support than ever for people facing job losses, financial insecurity and tenancy issues, Mr Speakman said. Recent alarming reports have suggested the pandemic is increasing the risk of domestic abuse in the home. Almost 80 percent of this funding will support services for people facing domestic and family violence to help victim-survivors get the legal support they need, hold perpetrators to account and ultimately save lives. Funding will benefit a range of specialist centres providing targeted support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, seniors, people with disabilities, young people and migrants and refugees, and generalist centres from Lismore to Broken Hill. Community Legal Centres NSW Executive Director Tim Leach welcomed the funding boost which forms part of the Commonwealth Government’s $15.6 million investment to support NSW legal assistance services impacted by COVID-19. NSW’s community legal centres have responded swiftly and effectively to the challenges presented by disasters like droughts, bushfires or a global pandemic and found new ways to support our communities through times of crisis, Mr Leach said. This funding is critical to our capacity to respond to huge increases in COVID-related demand. Centres have terrific plans for fast-track projects that will deliver innovative and efficient legal supports into communities. The Attorney General has accepted the recommendations of an expert evaluation panel that all 34 community legal centres that made an application receive funding. This announcement builds on the NSW Government’s record investments into the community legal sector, with more than $40 million injected into community legal centres over three years. 07.01.2022 Wednesday, September 9 2020 ONLINE TOOLKIT PUTS WOMENS FINANCIAL FUTURE IN THE PALM OF THEIR HANDS Women across NSW will be able to access a comprehensive online financial resource thanks to the launch of the Womens Financial Toolkit Its your future.... Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the resource draws on a range of tools designed to help women improve their financial literacy. We are living in incredibly challenging times, with many women facing economic uncertainty and insecurity, Mrs Taylor said. Knowledge is power and I want to make sure all women across NSW have the resources to improve their financial wellbeing, whatever their personal circumstances. The Womens Financial Toolkit is designed to be something of a one-stop shop which can be used by women from all walks of life. Developed by Women NSW and the Minister for Womens Council for Womens Economic Opportunity (CWEO), the Toolkit links women to trustworthy information about taking control of day-to-day expenses, setting up and managing a small business and dealing with unexpected emergencies, as well as advice on shaping their financial future. Taleen Shamlian, CWEO member and Managing Director of Advisory Street, said it is vital that women have access to credible information to protect their financial security. We hope women will find the Toolkit really useful and share it with their friends because we all wish to be economically empowered, said Ms. Shamlian. For single working mum Suzanne*, raising two children with minimal child support has meant financial pressure building over the course of a decade. She accessed the Toolkit on the recommendation of a friend, and it really helped to take the pressure off. I was so relieved to find so much information about money in one place. I could easily find out how to get help with my money issues, she said. The Toolkit helped connect Suzanne with a free financial counsellor. They advocated for me and I was able to have several debts waived due to financial hardship. I also worked out a new budget that is helping me pay other debts, she said. 06.01.2022 Tuesday, 14 July 2020 FUNDING FOR VULNERABLE TEMPORARY VISA HOLDERS Emergency grant funding is now available to support vulnerable temporary visa holders and specialist migrant and settlement services during the COVID-19 pandemic.... Acting Minister for Multiculturalism Geoff Lee today announced $4 million in support funding is now available for those in need. Vulnerable temporary visa holders are increasingly at risk of hardship since the onset of the pandemic, Mr Lee said. We know that specialist migrant and settlement organisations have had to really step up in extremely challenging times to support some of the most vulnerable in our society with their most basic necessities. This has also taken place at a time where there has been an overall decline of volunteers and resources supporting these organisations due to the pandemic. The increased funding comes on top of the $2 million of grants already distributed to provide immediate emergency relief to asylum seekers. The funding will provide a much-needed helping hand to provide emergency relief including food, medical support, telecommunications, transport and essential housing. Grant funding will also be available to support culturally appropriate case and support workers, transportation and outreach services to connect with isolated community members and interpreting and translation services. Applications close at 4pm on Monday, 27 July 2020. 06.01.2022 August 2020 INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY I extend my warmest wishes to all Australians celebrating the anniversary of Indias Independence on 15 August. India and Australia have a long and proud history of cooperation and shared values. India has been our largest source of migrants since 2016 and the vibrant Indian migrant community is our third largest, with almost 700,000 people. Last year almost 40,000 Indian nationals made the pledge to become Australian citizens.... Australia has greatly benefited from the diversity, skills and continued contributions of Australias Indian community. They continue to build on Australias position as the most successful multicultural society in the world. As the Prime Minister emphasised at his recent virtual summit with Prime Minister Modi, India is a very important friend to Australia and the strength of our strong bilateral relationship and our like-minded democracies are key to a more open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific. I thank Indian community leaders and the broader Indian Australian community for your continued support in the fight against COVID-19 and the support you provide to your communities in dealing with issues arising from this situation. I send my best wishes to all those marking Indian Independence Day, noting that like many other occasions it will be celebrated very differently this year. ALAN TUDGE See more

03.01.2022 Friday, 17 July 2020 50-YEAR VISION FOR SYDNEYS OPEN SPACE AND PARKLANDS A new 50-Year Vision for Greater Sydneys network of parklands and green open spaces has been launched today by the NSW Government, heralded by an initial $10 million investment to revitalise one of the citys forgotten harbour-side parks. ... Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the draft Vision which is now open for public comment puts NSW on a path to the first-ever metropolitan-wide plan for the citys open spaces and parklands. Our citys parks are one of our greatest assets and belong to all of us; its time for a clear, single vision to protect, manage, enhance and expand them for generations to come, Mr Stokes said. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how we need to change the way we look at our public spaces not as parks in a city but rather as Sydney as a city within a park. The Vision will be championed by a new Greater Sydney Parklands (GSP) government agency that brings together the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust, Parramatta Park Trust, and Western Sydney Parklands Trusts, as well as the parklands of Callan Park and Fernhill Estate. Michael Rose, Chairman of the Committee for Sydney, has been appointed the Chair of GSP board. In the past, the individual parkland trusts have had a sole focus on the land within their boundaries. Now we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to look beyond those boundaries to plan for our parklands and open spaces over the next 50 years as a connected and vital network that forms the backbone of our city, Mr Stokes said. This new city-wide agency will work in partnership with communities and local councils across Greater Sydney to champion the new Vision and ensure were working holistically to expand and improve our open spaces and parklands. Combined, the agency will oversee more than 6,000 hectares of parklands across Sydney, which host almost 40 million visits each year. Callan Park in Sydneys inner west is the first park to be identified through the GSP for urgent restorative work, with $10 million in funding allocated to enhance the connection with the waterfront and Bay Run. A new Landscape Structure Plan has been released for public comment, which will inform how the funding is spent. This investment in Callan Park is just the start and demonstrates our commitment to revitalising and growing our citys great public open spaces, starting with one of its great forgotten jewels, Mr Stokes said. The draft 50-Year Vision for Greater Sydneys Open Space and Parklands will be open for consultation until 11 September 2020.
