14.01.2022 TRAINING TIP #1 - Dumbells for chest training - Many gym goers , especially guys, love using the bench press for strength training and or muscular development. ... Whilst the bench press is valuable for strength and some muscle increases, there are several advantages in using dumbells for chest training. 1. Each arm is working independently which will correct imbalances between right and left musculature. 2. Strength gains from dumbells will increase your Bench Press but it doesn't flow back the other way. 3. Pectoral muscle stimulation is higher with dumbells due to the greater range of motion available on the eccentric part of the lift. 4. There is greater tension on the target muscle with dumbells. EMG analysis which measures muscle activation during movements shows that barbell presses recruit the triceps more than shoulder and chest...and Dumbell presses activate the pectoral and anterior deltoid more. 5. Dumbells allow more freedom of movement at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints and therfore a lifter can find the optimal angle to hold the weights according to biomechanics, mobility limitations or even injuries. 6. The pectoral muscle can be trained at various angles of resistance allowing more muscle fibers to be targeted. With the barbell the movement is fixed. In short, use both Barbell and Dumbells for your chest and shoulder training but thoroughly understand what each provides and what are the likely outcomes relative to your goals. The recommendation for most athletes is to use the bench press for strength gains during general training phases and switch to dumbells as you move into semi-specific phases of training. As you move into specific training blocks for competition use movements that have a dynanic correspondence to your sports demands. This will allow an athlete to train strength expression specific to a sport or position. I.e pushing, throwing, striking, hitting, punching etc
