25.01.2022 What do you think I’m scraping off from this hair? Yes. There might be some silicone compounds from styling products, conditioners, shampoos, moisturisers or ot...her products here but there are also natural oils, conditioning oils and waxes, cuticle from the hair shaft, polymers from styling products and anything the hair may have been exposed to. Of course the longer between shampoos the more residue there will be. Also if the person is applying products daily and only shampooing occasionally the more you will find! If you do this ‘scrape test’ to any hair shaft with sharp enough scissors you are likely to get a similar result! This does not mean there is a build-up of only silicones or that it will block or react to colour. Here are the facts: We make hair feel and look good using a multitude of ingredients which contain amongst others: oils, waxes and/or silicones. All these ingredients have their pros and cons but are usually used in effective combinations. There are approximately 4000+ different types of silicones Silicones are emollients making the hair feel soft and conditioned They add shine Have excellent slip/lubrication, comb-ability Reduced friction and breakage They can be light weight in comparison to oils and waxes and have the ability to help seal moisture both in the hair shaft and from the outside. Prevent frizzing in high humidity Silicones are of enormous assistance to product’s formulators as well as professional and retail users Some silicone ingredients can weigh some finer hair types down as can oils, waxes and some polymers. Using heavy-handed applications of silicone anti-frizz serum can create build-up however this is rectified by simply shampooing the hair with Deep Cleanser. Silicones will not cause a chemical reaction with colour. Types of silicone: Silicones listed as cyclomethicones or amodimethicones are often light in nature and used in leave-in products Silicones listed as Dimethicones are heavier and will require rinsing/washing off. Silicones complexes comprise a long list of names often separated by ( - )or (and) under the one single ingredient. These will often need to be rinsed/washed off as well. Please don't be frightend of these ingredients because of the inflamatory hype that circulates the internet. There is a place for these ingredients when used in the correct porportion, concentration and application.
