16.01.2022 Whose responsibility is this: federal or state? The drama of the inflammable cladding is still very fresh in our memories. It is five months ago now that the175 Opal tower apartments became uninhabitable. Dozens of high rise apartments on the Gold Coast are in trouble. But state and federal authorities are still working out who is actually responsible. Surely this IS a national problem and it has to be solved nationally, as soon as possible. Here is a reading that tells the latest shocking revelation.

13.01.2022 The editorial in today's SMH says it all. Earlier on this Facebook Page the irresponsible cancellation by the Federal Coalition of the National Energy Guarantee was highlighted, essentially a "do-nothing" approach in respect of climate change. The consequences for NSW - and other states - are such that they have to deal with that important issue alone, as best as they can. Even in NSW the Liberal Energy Minister Don Harwin has spoken out against the Federal mismanagement. The... NSW ALP clearly has a different agenda. Frankly, this is an absurd situation. Australia needs a national energy policy based on international climate change targets. That should not be an "ideal world" as the editorial puts it. This is an essential world but the federal system makes it impossible to achieve. This Facebook Page presents example after example to demonstrate the need the replacement of Federation. Does the ALP grasps this reality? What will it do about it? See more

12.01.2022 Students at the u3a organisation, Central Coast, NSW will be attending courses on the Australian Federation (2) and the Australian Constitution (2) in August, 2019. They may benefit greatly from looking at the many instances in the last decades that the federal structure of the Australian Government has proved damaging to the country's performance. 10.01.2022 Finally, as predicted on this Facebook page, even an ultra conservative Federal government has to step in now and recognise the overriding importance of the national interest reflected in the Murray-Darling River Management Plan. "Unconstitutional", as some people claim? Change the Constitution! Abandon the federal structure altogether, the sooner the better. Millions of dollars in funding for regional water projects are being withheld by the Commonwealth because the Berejiklian government has failed to complete basic Murray-Darling river management plans more than six months after they were due, according the SMH leader article written by Kylar Loussikan.

09.01.2022 Are there in fact two plans? The water-sharing plan AND the Murray-Darling Plan? One thing seems clear: it was not adhered to by some of those who signed up for it. The national interest has suffered greatly as a result. COAG is not a solution to federal problems. Commitments made to it have been abandoned.

09.01.2022 Peter Hartcher points out that the federal government is not imposing its national power on the states as a result of which the nation is "fractured" in dealing with what has become a major national problem - comparable to war! Although a "National Cabinet" has been formed for the particular purpose of dealing with the Coronavirus invasion clearly there are serious differences about how to deal best with this dilemma the result being that several mixed messages are being comm...unicated. The Premiers and medical opinion favour a quick complete national lockdown. The Prime Minister favours a much more nuanced solution it seems considering the economic repercussions, e.g. unemployment, renters, small business, the banks etc. The federal structure of government appears to be a hindrance to effective action at this point, for the moment at least. 07.01.2022 George Megalogenis discussed the issue of the Ruby Princess, not stopped by the Commonwealth, allowing 2700 passengers to disembark, not tested at all for the Coronavirus. How could this happen? Where was "Border Security"? Why did the State government not step in? Much of the rest of the article questions the role of federation. Will the states go their own way? Will the federal government take over through its new "National Cabinet"? George believes that "a new federal compact will have to be struck". But is that the right step? Will this episode not call for the REPLACEMENT of Federation altogether with an effective unitary Government?

05.01.2022 How much longer will it take the major parties, and especially the ALP which used to be a no-states party until three recent ALP premiers abandoned ship for some reason, to wake up to the realities summed up perfectly by John Hewson in this article? The costly federal structure does NOT produce decentralisation either. It produces centralisation in the major cities. Anthony Albanese what are you going to do about this?

04.01.2022 This crisis reinforces the urgent need to replace federation with a decentralised unitary system with much greater emphasis on local government that could be called a mezzanine level of regional organisation of local councils. The ROCs system could be a forerunner of that. One can read about that in the book by a group of enthusiasts published by BookPod, Melbourne at the end of 2014: Beyond Federation. The current crisis could well be the tipping point of a much more widespread awareness of the need for change as well the need for a new Australia Constitution altogether.

03.01.2022 The enormous fires in Australia naturally have thrown up the issue of national responsibility in controlling them rather than each state having separate responsibilities with little input from the federal government. Here again, these assumptions make little sense. SMH Journalist Mike Foley wrote a preceptive article that questions the second inquiry in two years. What Australia has been presented with in recent months is a further shortcoming of the federal structure of governance. The cost has been horrendous. Political stunts are not an adequate answer to the mounting problems of federalism in Australia.
