21.01.2022 Valuable insights into parenting challenges after disasters from Dr Lauren Kosta and Professor Louise Harms, based on parents' experiences after Black Saturday - see page 9 of the latest Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) newsletter on disaster resilience and recovery. "Thinking of how to support children and families following a disaster involves being aware of the experiences of parents. Expert advice on strategies... for helping children is certainly a form of support parents seek and appreciate, but it is only one part of the puzzle. The experience of parenting both influences and is influenced by parent’s own recovery following a disaster. Acknowledging the range of challenges parents face, can be useful to thinking about service provision as well as helping parents feel heard, understood and supported in difficult times." https://asmr.org.au///2020/05/ASMR-Newsletter-May-2020.pdf

15.01.2022 Disaster resilience and recovery conversations are filled with mentions of community, but collapsing various groups together this way fails to acknowledge tha...t people experience disasters differently. For Indigenous peoples whose experiences are shaped by vastly different historical and cultural contexts to non-Indigenous Australians the lack of understanding or cultural safety demonstrated by government agencies and non-government organisations created additional trauma during the Black Summer bushfires. A insightful article by our ANU colleague Bhiamie Williamson and our CCW team member Phoebe Quinn
14.01.2022 For those who were affected by the summer season of bushfires, we know the onset of the pandemic must be making things even harder than they were already and we are advocating for your needs every day. We are working closely with key government and emergency management agencies to keep converting our research evidence into guidance for bushfire recovery work. Spending time together and supporting each is so important after a disaster recovery experience but obviously complic...ated by the current measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The term being used is social isolation but physical separation is actually the goal, so we encourage you to think of creative ways to connect with your family, friends and neighbours while staying safe. This online app developed by charity Gather My Crew (https://gathermycrew.org.au/) that helps people to arrange practical support from their social networks may be of use. It can be used through a buddy system for those not active online. Take care.
