17.01.2022 With the current plague of mice and rats, we have seen a huge increase in the number of dogs (and cats) that we are treating for bait toxicity. We are now trea...ting several patients a week where normally we might treat one or two a month. Mice and rats will move baits so even if you think baits have been placed safely in ‘a station’ or are ‘tucked away out of reach’.... they are not. Signs of rodenticide toxicity include Lethargy, inappetence, bruising of the skin, blood in urine, bleeding from the nose, pale mucus membranes and continued bleeding from small wounds. Methods of treatment include, inducing vomiting, blood tests, vitamin K treat and in severe cases blood and plasma transfusions and intensive medical treatment. If you have any suspicion that your pet may have ingested a bait: the best advise we have is to get it your local vets early...

03.01.2022 ++ Leptospirosis in dogs: new disease ++ Many of you may have heard reports of an illness affecting dogs called leptospirosis. This is a rare bacterial illness ...that affects many different species of animals, including humans. The bacteria live in soil and water and can also spread through the urine of an infected animal. In Australia it has been an illness known to affect cattle and pigs for many years but recently a strain has emerged that affects dogs. There have been a few isolated cases reported in Sydney over the past few months. There have been no reports in Newcastle to our knowledge. It is believed the dogs have become ill due to exposure to rats: hunting or eating them or indirectly via their urine. Signs of infection typically include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and jaundice. If caught early the disease can be treated with antibiotics and hospital care. The risk of your dog contracting the illness is very low. It is best to avoid puddles of stagnant water and prevent your dog from interacting with rats or areas where rats are found. There is a vaccine has become available for those wishing to vaccinate against it. Please see us for a consultation if you are interested in discussing this further.
