22.01.2022 SATURDAY SCIENCE Our brains are incredible in so may ways. How something so delicate can be such a powerful micro-processor in incredible. To see differences in the way the brain developed and works between the two genders is beyond intriguing. I am sure when most of us have left this earth, they will still be making huge discoveries about the human brain.... REPOST: @the.brain.guy - Male/female differences exist in every major part of the Human brain. Through molecular, animal, and neuroimaging studies, a great deal of information regarding the differences between male and female brains and how much they differ in regards to both structure and function has been uncovered. - This may be due to the fact that females have a more intricate evaluation of risk-scenario contemplation, based on a prefrontal cortical control of the amygdala. For example, the ability to recall information better than males most likely originated from sexual selective pressures on females during competition with other females in mate selection. Recognition of social cues was an advantageous characteristic because it ultimately maximized offspring and was therefore selected for during evolution. - Oxytocin is a hormone that induces contraction of the uterus and lactation in mammals and is also a characteristic hormone of nursing mothers. Studies have found that oxytocin improves spatial memory, plays a role in the enhancement of long-term synaptic plasticity and long-term memory. This hormone may have helped mothers remember the location of distant food sources so they could better nurture their offspring. Meta-analysis of grey matter in the brain found sexually dimorphic areas of the brain in both volume and density. Our livers have been in overdrive for the last month of Christmas partying and maybe longer if you've had the misfortune to have experienced a recent lockdown, so this can be a gift to our body and mind. Prepare and rest the body ready for the Aussie Day weekend Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to skip the alcohol for the entire week. Yes. You. Can! It’s all about drinking enough water at least 8-10 240 ml glasses of water a day. There are many free apps out there that will help you track and calculate what your body needs if you need reminders. I use one myself, as on busy days time would fly without me giving drinking a single thought. You already know that drinking water is important- especially if you were a member during our "Water Month" in 2020 but you may not remember or realize HOW important it actually is, and how it impacts everything from your energy to your weight and just everything happening inside your body. Experts are mixed on exactly how much water you should drink each day, but making sure you get enough will make a big impact in so many different ways. A study in England found that taking regular days off (preferably at least two in a row) from drinking helped improve sleep. It also reduced the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, some cancers and liver disease. Cutting back on alcohol will also boost your energy levels, make it easier to lose weight. and you might even notice that your skin suddenly looks better (clearer, less acne, and wrinkle-prone!). Going without alcohol can be a great time to pay attention, and notice how we feel without it, and what role it actually plays in our daily lives. This is completely reasonable reaction given the importance of the back to overall function and well being. However, from multiple standpoints research indicates there is reason to be optimistic with such a diagnosis. . Firstly, many disc herniations will spontaneously regress (heal). In fact, worse herniations = faster and more substantial the regression . The rate of spontaneous regression was found to be 96% for disc sequestration, 70% for disc extrusion, 41% for disc protrusion, and 13% for disc bulging. The rate of complete resolution of disc herniation was 43% for sequestrated discs and 15% for extruded discs. . Second, many people have disc herniations and are asymptomatic. Given this, the diagnosis on its own is not necessarily a sentence for back pain and regression may not always be needed for an improvement in symptoms . Pain is in fact multifactorial! . 14.01.2022 EASIEST-EVER PUMPKIN DATE BARS cup each raw cashews and pumpkin seeds 1 cup pitted dates cup pumpkin puree... cup shredded coconut cup dried apricots 1-2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice (recipe below) INSTRUCTIONS Toss all ingredients in a high-speed blender or food processor and mix until combined. You might have to adjust the amount of dried fruit depending on how wet the pumpkin is. Scrape the blended batter into a bowl and set aside while you line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a tablespoon or ice cream scoop, scoop out the batter, form into a bar shape and place on the cookie sheet. Place the bars in the refrigerator for 1 hour to allow to firm up before eating. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. PUMPKIN SPICE MIX RECIPE 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons ground ginger 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground allspice 1 teaspoon ground cloves INSTRUCTIONS Add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk until well combined. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

I've spoken with so many people in the past few weeks who sadly still feel uneasy about the future and totally unnerved by the past 12 months... and rightly so. So much we hope for, but so much is unknown It has been biblical in Australia, financial downturn, severe drought, fires, pandemic, floods, more financial downturn ... it does at times seem that all we missed was the locust plague, and who knows maybe somewhere it eventuated.... 06.01.2022 We would like to send a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Madi Parkes on making the North Coast Academy of Sport Elite Netball Squad Whoo Hoo go girl!! Madi is one of our Legends of Tomorrow and her chosen sport is Netball, although she is definitely a multi-talented superstar. Madi is a very focused, dedicated, diligent and consistent young lady and her dream is to be an elite professional netballer playing for state and country. We KNOW she will make it! ... Madi began training with Coach Tracy back in February 2019, first through the BDC Performance program where Tracy provided the Strength and Conditioning component, and then at the Beyond Limits Dojo in our Coffs Athletic High Performance Academy program, where she has gone on to train with both Tracy and Josh. At the start of 2020 Madi said her only goal was to make the NCAS Elite Netball Squad, and she did it!! Let’s just say that when her Coaches got the call, they were just as excited and proud as she was (they may even have had a little bit of a jig & dance happening) What was the key to Madi’s success? She never complains, she is fully focused when attending, she has fun and she does any homework given- including mobility and the other boring stuff, most of us try to escape. Congratulations again Madi! We can’t wait to see what magic 2021 has in store and what goals and dreams we can smash together this year. 03.01.2022 Why Should We Exercise Exercise is a requirement for us all, no matter our age. Once we lived more physical lives, and we could say that it was our seniors and older adults that didn't get enough "heart pumping" exercise. Then the ages of mechanical technology & artificial intelligence hit and with it arrived the fact that as adults, we now moved & worked less physically. ... NOW most adult populations lack good quality exercise. A study published Oct. 2020 found only 15% of aussie adults meet both exercise and muscle strength standard guidelines. Sadly though, our children & youth have now joined the adult populations, leading more sedentary lives. The same study found that, 17% of 2-5yr olds met the recommended minimum physical activity guidlines, 12 % of 6 -12yr olds and shockingly only 2% of adolescents met their physical activity guidelines...woah!!! That's crazy isn't it! There are many mitigating factors as to why the kids figures are so poor; parents who don't exercise are less likely to encourage or support their kids to exercise, parents are fearful of injury, costs, are too time poor to enable team sports and general apathy by kids who are now well and truly part of the artificial intelligence age and would rather sit indoors and play video games. Another sad reason though (which is often socially avoided in discussions) is the pushy, competitive parent, who drives their kids into hatred of sport, who's robbed it of fun and left the kids avoiding it where ever possible. Generally, the smarter we've become as a species, the lazier we've become. We make excuses for not having the health we should or the fitness we have. We will do anything to avoid doing what we know deep down we should. Bad health has just been accepted, and if we are told we need to take action, so many of us want quick fix, lazy options like pills, surgery... and insane diets. Some exercise facts; * Can be started at any age. * Can be done in some way with nearly all medical conditions and injuries - you just need good professional guidance to keep you safe. A sore arm doesn't stop you exercising your butt or legs-even if you tell yourself so. * Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will your fitness levels be... but there's no need to go berserk with your efforts, plus it will likely only lead to injury, burnout or hate of exercise. * Exercise does not need to be a formal, expensive or boring activity, you can start by taking a walk, a swim, throwing a ball or wrestling with the kids. * You don't need to get fitter to begin exercising... who are you kidding with that excuse. How's that supposed to work anyway? .. it's like the chicken or egg argument. So think about it.... the kids, your partner, your parents... YOU... can all start today to be healthier and fitter. The benefits are awesome. Afterall, we'd bet not exercising hasn't gotten you closer to your health and fitness goals has it? So trying it could be the just the answer.
03.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS CURE UPDATE The work of Professor David Paterson, Queensland Australia. Brisbane researchers say they are within reach of finding a cure for COVID-19 but need donations to accelerate the research.... In lab testing, two drugs that are already clinically approved and registered for clinical use in patients have stopped Coronavirus in its tracks and a clinical trial on humans is ready to begin to work out which of the two is best or whether it should be a combination of the two. One is a HIV treatment and the other is a Malaria treatment. They have given the drugs to some desperately unwell patients already, as they are already used in medicine here so by-passing the need for clinical drug testing trials for new medicines. It appears currently that the drugs are best given within the first 5 days of illness to avoid hospitalisation with serious illness. Renowned RBWH Infectious Diseases Physician Professor David Paterson who is overseeing the research said the drugs are effective but they are yet to determine whether one is better than another. Let's hope this is truly what we are seeking. They only need $750,000 due to the medicines already being approved for patient use. Where do we donate?
