18.01.2022 RAKU POTTERY From humble beginnings as a small craft operation, the production of this "Raku" POTTERY now employs over 45 people from a small village outside of Cape town in South Africa. All the pieces are handmade and hand painted before being fired at 950 degrees Celsius. They are then placed in smouldering sawdust which blackens the crazes This process is largely uncontrolled and the slight imperfections that appear in the glaze make each piece unique. 13.01.2022 Telephone Wire Bowls This project was established in a subsistence farming area where unemployment is close to 80%. Over 400 people have become skilled in various basketwork, beadwork, and sewing techniques as a direct result of this project. Crafters vary from a regular core group, to others who produce irregularly depending on their commitments (birth of a child, hut building, cropping).... This project has also helped to build a creche for the community, as well as implementing a food scheme. Some of the older boys are using their incomes to help put themselves through school.

Their aim is to create innovative contempory designs using traditional hand skills and locally sustainable raw materials. The women, many of whom are grandmothers, work from home enabling them to maintain a traditional lifestyle and to care for their own children, and many vulnerable or orphaned children within their community.
