18.01.2022 Why businesses run out of cash (8 minute read) Over recent weeks I have seen a number of posts and articles talking about "Cash Management" or "Cash Flow Forecasting". They often focus on useful and important tactics for managing creditors, debtors and inventory levels. I think there is more to be said though, about why businesses run out of cash.... Would love to have your comments and thoughts. https://deancraven.com//12/20/why-businesses-run-out-of-c/(opens in a new tab) #cashflow #businessplanning #workingcapitalmanagement

15.01.2022 I have had the privilege to be a mentor for this year's Generation Innovation challenge; a program for 15 - 25-year-olds with a dream to start their own businesses. The challenge has reached the final stages and from an initial cohort of 13 entries, the four finalists have progressed to their crowd-funding round. I, obviously, have my own favourite..... but follow the link in the comments below to see the four pitches [they are soooo professional!] and see who your favourite ...is. If you could donate a small amount to your favourite, it would give them a huge boost. Just the price of your morning Smashed Avo and coffee would make all the difference! Vote now, and give a young entrepreneur a leg-up! Thank you.

13.01.2022 STARTING YOUR BUSINESS JUST GOT SAFER Studies show that over 70% of new businesses will fail within 3 years - and that was before COVID-19. The studies also show that the top 5 consistent reasons for failure include:... > Running out of cash and > Lack of financial planning Why? When there is a book-keeper or accountant on every block? Let me tell you The majority of business founders and small business owners have not had any formal coaching in business finance and reporting. Small business owners are constantly in 'hustle' mode - looking to make the next sale and build their business. They often leave the numbers side of the business to their book-keeper, their hired-help. And yet, they don't appreciate the true value that their qualified and experienced book-keeper or accountant can add to their business - because they don't know the language to use, the questions to ask. Might this sound like you? Do you pay a book-keeper a weekly/monthly/quarterly fee to manage your paperwork? How would you feel if you could X-times the value you're getting for that fee..... and reduce the chances of joining the 70% club? Having spent 20+ years helping big businesses get bigger, and the last 5 years coaching and supporting start-ups, I have just launched an AFFORDABLE and EASY to DIGEST series of courses called .... "Conversations with my Accountant" .... ... to help you get more, and more, value from the dollars you spend with your book-keeper and accountant. The investment for the first module "The Language we Use" is 40 minutes of your time and less than an hour's fee rate of your book-keeper. FULL DISCLOSURE: Yes I am an accountant - but I'm not looking to be your accountant. I coach small businesses to have more confidence in the numbers side of their business, to feel in greater control of the decisions they make, and to sleep more soundly knowing they will have cash in the bank when they need it. Sign up for The Language we Use and you will receive a full refund if you then sign up for the 7-week "Gaining Control" course, which has a $179 price tag. My pricing is geared to helping as many cash-strapped small business owners as I can, and reducing that failure rate! Link now to my course page: business-growth-systems.teachable.com/p/conversations-with- See you there!

11.01.2022 Show me the money......! This morning I spent time with one of my clients going over their pitch to a panel of investors, to be given in the next couple of weeks. It was a great session.... The pitch itself was awesome. I totally bought into the business concept, the problem being solved and the market potential that was being presented. Then we got to the ASK at the end. At this point the presentation became a little less clear. Not wooley exactly, but articulated with less confidence than the preceding sessions and therefore inviting more scrutiny from the panel. There is basically two questions that are to be answered at this point....... 1. How much do you need ? and 2. What will you spend it on ? A basic... "give me $200K and I'll do some marketing" really won't do the trick and will spoil a previously excellent pitch. [I should say, at this point, that my client was much better prepared than this - but we still spent valuable time honing that final section of the pitch....... and preparing detailed answers for the inevitable interrogation at the end]. My take-away is this; Take the time to fully 'know your numbers'.... Investors are, first and foremost, looking for a return on their investment. You need to be able to look them squarely in the eye and let them know their money is safe in your hands. If you are the ideas person, the creative, the passion-owner and therefore not necessarily a numbers person.... find someone to help you. Please don't leave your awesome idea on the table for the sake of a few hours preparation.

11.01.2022 Pricing - science or art ? Pricing your product or service is part Science and part Art. Pricing is first and foremost a marketing activity.... one of the "4-P's" - Product, Price, Place and Promotion. ... In order to safely play in the Marketing art space you need a firm handle on the science part. In this article I begin to explore this key aspect to maximising your income. Follow the link to the article in the comments below. #pricing #profit #businessplanning

10.01.2022 Business Sustainability during economic downturns: Identifying and controlling costs is a vital step in helping you to face up to the increasing stress of the current economic conditions. It isn't the only step you could / should be taking though.... The whole economy is hurting, so you're not alone. Think about these steps to help you emerge at the end of the current downturn in a strong position. You have customers.... that are hurting. You have suppliers.... that are hurting. You might not think in these terms but you are part of an overall supply chain. Select your best customers. Select your preferred suppliers. Now, more than ever, it will be vital to build relationships within your supply-chain. Maybe if you were to offer up a supply-chain working group, with your best and favourite partners, you could identify ways of working together to get through this together and come out the other end stronger and fitter; well placed to take advantage of the uptick when it happens. Take action. Give it a try..... What have you got to lose? In the meantime..... Get a handle on your product gross profit margins. Identifying weaker products in your portfolio will help your decision making if you find yourself in a position of having to pare back your operations. Wishing you all well into the future.

05.01.2022 When you're building a business a successful exit with a fat cheque is often the dream. But even if it is not the dream to begin with, it may very well be an option as time, and your business ambitions, progress. This excellent article by award-winning entrepreneur Manny Padda tells how to improve your chances of getting that big payout for your business.... My humble addition to Manny's advice would be to think of an exit as a possibility right from day one; set milestones and an upward growth trajectory and execute on your plans to hit those milestones. Why ? Because nothing will give a potential investor more confidence than your track-record of having a plan, setting those milestones and then hitting them. Enjoy Manny's article! #growth #planning #exitplan
