25.01.2022 Can you guess what our "mystery plant" pictured is? We have only given a little "tease" of its unique flower formation! Here are some hints to help you work it out: - I am Australia's only native nut... - I originate in the Rainforest regions of New South Wales and Queensland - I can take up to five years to produce my first nuts - My nuts have the hardest nut shells in thew world - so much so that you need special nut cracking machines that crack the tough shell without damaging the edible kernel inside - My nuts are often used in chocolate and biscuits and have always been a part of the diet of local Aboriginal people of the above regions - Australia and Hawaii are now the major commercial producing areas You can find this in the Australia Forest as well as several other locations in Adelaide Botanic Garden.

21.01.2022 Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eyes peeled!!!! And speaking of potatoes....here is a garden bed of potatoes rapidly growing with the slightly warmer conditions of spring. These were planted way back in August by students visiting the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden from Southern Montessori School.... We are very much looking forward to digging these out of the soil in harvest time, most likely on the other side of Christmas!

18.01.2022 Here is an impressive "good news" story to send out during Australian Pollinators week! These images are of native bee hotels that were designed and built by year 4 students from Mitcham Primary School. The hotels were the culmination of their STEM inquiry into declining bee populations, the impacts of this and what we could do to help. We really enjoyed hosting all the year 4 students from Mitcham Primary at Adelaide Botanic Garden recently and sharing our knowledge of bees... and pollination with them. The visit served as their "grand finale" of all their learning back at school. Thank you to the school for sharing these with us!

17.01.2022 Have you ever seen a Dragon Tree before? Originating from the Canary Islands, Dracaena draco derives from the Greek term ‘drakaina‘, meaning a female dragon a reference to the reddish resin that exudes from the bark and leaves, supposedly resembling dragon’s blood! The tree also has scaly stems, which adds to this story.... The dragon tree reminds many visiting children of Truffula trees from the book The Lorax by Dr Seuss! You can find a Dragon Tree in the Classground section of Adelaide Botanic Garden.

17.01.2022 Do you like capers on your pizza? If you don't, we are sure you will still be able to appreciate the Caper bush (Capparis spinosa)! The accompanying image was captured recently from the Economic Garden at Adelaide Botanic Garden. This time of year this plant is visited by a large number of the Caper white butterflies (also pictured). These migrate annually from northern parts of the State during October to December and eat only plants belonging to the Caper family (Cappari...s). #plantanimalinteractions

15.01.2022 How wonderful is this aerial footage of the regeneration of Grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) on Kangaroo Island after bushfire ravaged the region last summer? Nature recovery at its best! Thanks to IG: __serio__ for the Instagram capture. https://www.instagram.com/p/CF_TF2xjt3a/

14.01.2022 Today marks Earth Overshoot Day, where humankind's demand for ecological resources outstrips the rate of regeneration in a given year. This is a perfect opportunity for a Problem-Based Learning project in your class! Perhaps a study of food waste, impacts of industry on rainforests, or restoring nearby habitat. Have your students assess their 'footprints' through the range of lessons at https://www.overshootday.org/kids-and/classroom-activities/

11.01.2022 This beautiful Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) is located on Araucaria Avenue, Adelaide Botanic Garden. The flag of Lebanon has a Cedar of Lebanon upon it as it is such an important tree in Lebanon's history. It was also a tree of significance for the Ancient Egyptians. Sarcophagi (coffins), boats, bowls and furniture were made from the Lebanon cedar. Only the wealthy could afford to have the items made from this timber because it had to be imported from great distances before being decorated in Egypt. The tomb of Tutankhamun contained some special pieces of Lebanon cedar, among them a throne and footstool with the Pharaoh's enemies' names engraved into it! This symbolised his victory over them. Cleopatra also used cedar for her ships and best furniture.

11.01.2022 It's National NAIDOC week, a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australian Aboriginal peo...ple have an intricate understanding of the Australian environment, and a rich knowledge of plants developed over many thousands of years. Plants have been used for food, hunting, medicine, tools, ceremonies and in most other aspects of traditional life. In Adelaide Botanic Garden, you can find an ancient hollow tree in the Aussie Forest. The species is known as Karra to Kaurna people, and is now also known as River Red Gum or Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Burnt trunks like this were used as a basis for a shelter, made cosy and snug by blocking off openings exposed to the weather, and lining the floor with bark and animal fur rugs. A veranda, made of leaves, bark and branches extended the size of the shelter. The tree shelters - or wattowadli - were traditionally used in winter as family groups moved inland to escape the cold winds and flooded wetlands near the coast. Do you have a Karra near your place? They are such magnificent trees! #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

09.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day. Our wonderful country is home to over 500,000 species of plants and animals, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. However, in the last 200 years more than 100 species of plants and animals have become extinct, with many more threatened or at risk of extinction. In South Australia, 1 in 4 native South Australian plant species (more than 1,000) are threatened due to loss of habitat and competition with introduced ...species. National Threatened Species Day also celebrates the amazing work that is being done to save these species, including the work being undertaken by the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre. Established in 2002, the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre helps to protect the state’s threatened plant species from extinction, while supporting the restoration of habitats around South Australia. Find out more information about their priceless work and many of the species of plants they are saving by clicking the below link: https://www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au//seed-conservation-ce

While the gardens are closed, the plants will keep growing, flowers will still bloom and be enjoyed by bees, butterflies and birds ... and all the beauty will be here waiting for you when the gates can open again. Until then, keep safe and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Photo: Aaron Harrison

06.01.2022 Did you know South Australia has it's own native mint? Most mints commonly found in our garden, such as peppermint and spearmint, have a Mediterranean origin. Mentha laxiflora, however, is a true Australian mint!... Commonly known as Forest Mint, Mentha laxiflora is a member of the plant family Labiate or mint family and is found in the South East of South Australia. It is currently listed as "vulnerable" species due to its rarity. Come see some yourself by visiting the Little Spouts Kitchen Garden at Adelaide Botanic Garden. It is located amongst the citrus section of the garden.

02.01.2022 Did you know that an average strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), has around 200 seeds! And how did the strawberry get its name? Some believe that English children in the 19th century would pick strawberries and string them on grass straws to sell as straws of berries.... Others think the name came from the practice of placing straw around the plants to protect them from the weather. Most people, believe strawberry came from strewn berry since strawberries appear to be strewn about on the plants where they grow.

01.01.2022 Happy Australian Pollinator week! Here is a wonderful short video from the Australian Conservation Foundation to help celebrate our pollinators and the essential role they play in our environment.
