Since gaining widespread recognition for taking a leading role in the world-famous 2010 Copiapó mining accident rescue operation (at a non-BHP mine), to save trapped miners, Walter has made an impressive impact leading safety, and inclusion and diversity initiatives across our Escondida operations in Chile, and in the broader Chilean mining industry. Walter shares, Making difficult decisions, resolving conflicts, negotiating strategically, are clear virtues of a leadership that thrives on conviction. And in the case of vulnerability, there is the healthy and necessary possibility to accept the error, to be empathetic and to connect with the emotions.



24.01.2022 Through our Partnerships for Resilience in Asia Fund (PRAF), BHP together with Kembara Kitchen in Malaysia distributed essential food items to families affected by COVID-19 and and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to frontliners in the states of Sabah and across Peninsular Malaysia. In August 2020, we established the USD$2 million fund to contribute towards COVID relief and recovery efforts in Malaysia and in other countries across Asia where our offices are located.
