14.01.2022 I want to take a moment to sincerely thank every single person who has supported Gunyah over the years, and those who continue to do so <3 Its hard to believe ...that Ive been running the Sanctuary for 20 years now! Originally self funded, it got to the point in 2010 where the Sanctuary had, by need, expanded to the point where I could no longer continue to fully fund it personally. I had poured everything into it over those 10 years, and would do that again in a heartbeat <3 At that point, I made the big decision to set it up as a fully registered charity and seek help from the public. Its been an incredible 10 years since Gunyah became "official" and what has been achieved in that time to help so many animals in need has surpassed everything I couldve imagined. Without your help, none of this wouldve been possible, so from the bottom of my heart, I thank you <3 For every single person out there, the world as we knew it has changed. There is fear and uncertainty everywhere, and every single one of us is impacted. I am very concerned about the future of this sanctuary. People, understandably, are having to focus on themselves and their loved ones and how they will get through this. Donations have dropped right off. I am regularly scouring information on any potential support that may be available for not for profits, and although there is some, Gunyah does not qualify. You have to have staff members to qualify and although I would love to have staff helping me, Gunyah just scrapes by and doesnt have the funding to pay wages! I will continue to explore any potential assistance that may be made available, as things are constantly changing. As it stands currently, if the charity runs out of funding (even due to these unprecented times), it is legally forced to wind up. Gunyah has come through many challenges over the years, but this is by far the biggest I and the Sanctuary have had to face. Only time will tell. Once again, thank you so much for supporting Gunyah. Without you, I would not be able to offer a safe and loving permanent refuge to the many animals who call Gunyah home <3 http://www.gunyah.org/donate.html

10.01.2022 This is a great "action shot" of what we start with after your dog presents for a Chocolate Toxicity. Thanks Dr. Antonucci for this picture. Thanks to the dogs... owner for allowing us to post and bringing her in to be fixed. Thanks to my staff for mopping up the floor. Thanks to the air filters for ridding the office of the smell of yucky chocolate. Thanks to the staff member who totally under estimated when placing a single blue pad to catch the vomit. See more

09.01.2022 Dog allergies? Nope! This is Dr. OConnors arm. She works with many dogs, cats, and other species during the week and 99% of the time, this doesnt happen. She... is not allergic to any animals. This is from yeast and bacteria on the dogs skin and coat. Usually from eating processed food laden with corn, soy, grain, and sugar which is a great source of food for yeast and bacteria, but not your carnivore companion. Some people think they are allergic to their dog, when in reality they are allergic to the yeast and bacteria growing on their bodies. Dr. OConnor only touched the dog with her hands and forearms, but could you imagine what shed look like if this dog were to cuddle up with her to sleep at night? That would probably wake her up itching or her body covered in this rash by morning. Switching up to a less processed food with species appropriate ingredients can help, preferably raw. You can also consider trying a simple skin spray of half organic apple cider vinegar/half water and mist over the coat (avoiding eyes) to help knock down the yeast and bacteria as well as balance the skins pH. Other reasons for a reaction like this is due to topical applications to the skin and coat that contain harmful ingredients. Edit: React to one dog or cat, but not another? The animals immune function plays a role here too. If immune function is poor, has been suppressed, gut microbiome imbalance... then itll be much tougher for the body to keep things in balance including the skin biome, pH, and oils. Immune function may still need additional support depending on health history. AND yes, some people are allergic to dogs. Dr. OConnor is not. For the past 10 years, its been observed that this only happens when she touches a dog on a poor diet or harsh topicals on their skin. Its something to consider thinking about. It has helped keep several dogs with their families over the years, after their human thought they suddenly had allergies and were thinking of re-homing. Didnt think this would get shared so much! I recommend switching to a mostly raw and unprocessed diet. Go as close to nature/natural as you can. Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to your dogs meal... This will aid in digestion and kill a lot of bad bacteria. Google "health benefits of apple cider vinegar". I am a dog behaviourist serving Sydney. 08.01.2022 UPDATE 26th February: Paul is currently leaving Jugion heading towards Yass. If you see him could you please check if he needs water/supplies. Paul & RJ did run... out of water before he got to Jugion over the weekend but thankfully made the last few kms without it. This brave man has been walking for just over a year with his beautiful dog RJ (Real Joy), pulling over a 120kg cart which he has named Ying Yang. He started his journey in South Australia and is heading to Canberra to petition the government for more funding for Suicide Awareness & compassionate & empathetic staffing in government run offices dealing with people with mental health issues. Tragically Paul lost his daughter Shona Mai in November 2018. If you see Paul along the road please stop and see if he needs anything, especially water in this heat. He will be heading from Nangus to Gundagai over the next few days. He has a go fund me page if you would like to help support this worthy cause. I will put a link to it in the comments. 06.01.2022 Warning: I am hoping everyone reads this and learns from our mistake, the mushrooms in the pictures have taken the life of our beautiful bullmastiff georgie, sh...e was a happy healthy bullmastiff only a few days ago. We found her laying dead friday afternoon, no signs of sickness nothing could be done. Her and her sister (photographed) ate mushrooms. Her sister is suffering from liver damage and has gone jaundice (yellow eyes, yellow tongue and yellow gums) there is nothing the vets can do, she too may loose this battle its just a matter of waiting and hoping she pulls through. The reason im writing this is because i was not aware that a fully grown bullmastiff can loose its precious life to just half a mushroom and many others probably dont understand the seriousness. Please everyone check your yards for ANY mushrooms i would never wish this heart ache on anyone. Pull them out by compleatly throw them in the bin and wash your hands.. Rest in peace beautiful georgie girl. Keep fighting ling! please share

05.01.2022 Here's me commentary on cats being dodgy #2

05.01.2022 Following on from the news yesterday of the tiger who caught Covid-19 from its keeper, we have had a few enquires as to whether our pet cats and dogs can catch ...it? The simple answer for dogs is no, at this stage. They appear to be poor hosts for the virus and as yet to our knowledge there have been no true cases of Covid-19 infection in dogs. However, cats can potentially become infected with the virus. As yet, there have been no cases of an infected cat then passing it on to a human, but we must assume this is a possibility until more evidence becomes available to us. However the important point to remember is that pet cats who live with their owners can only really become infected from their owners. Given that cats dont tend to be employed outside the home, their main point of contact for catching the infection, is you! Therefore your cat is NOT a risk to you, if anything it is the other way around! The current advice is that if you are infected with Covid-19, or are isolating while awaiting test results, simply stay away from household pets as well as human household members to reduce the spread of infection.
