24.01.2022 A photo gallery of our Mural tributes in the heart of the Bogside to the Great John Hume, created and dedicated to him some years ago. John was very proud of t...he murals we dedicated to him as part of The Peoples Gallery, he told us so, he said he was proud because he was honoured in the Bogside and that meant everything to him and he was grateful for it. We got to know John really well and he became a regular visitor to our old gallery on the corner of Rossville street. It was always a delight to watch him when French students and visitors would be in our gallery as John was a fluent French speaker and used to teach French at St Columbs College, the looks on the students faces was priceless when we told them who he was and then John spoke to them in French. Fifteen years ago in 2005 John wrote a personal letter on our behalf to the President of Berlin Sate Parliament after they cancelled an exhibition of ours titled From Conflict to Peace , it was scheduled to open within days of the cancellation at the Parliament House, its a long story, but John crafted a great letter pointing out to the Berlin State Parliament his disappointment with their decision and also pointing out some of the similarities between both Derry and Berlin of division and separation walls. We also paid tribute to John Hume in a mural at The Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago in 2009 which is now a permanent feature in their Gallery there. It was a natural thing and the right thing for us to dedicate murals to John Hume in the Bogside, we grew up with knowing him, we listened to him as kids in the late 60s making speeches from Free Derry corner, we heard him at first hand like most folks did back then and knew exactly what he was all about and the fact that he never changed makes him even more admirable. He once told us how proud he was of the Murals we dedicated to him. We The Bogside Artists are proud and have always been proud and honoured to have painted Derrys Greatest son in the heart of the Bogside, his home. And we can say he was our friend. Farewell to you John Hume and God bless your wonderful wife Pat and all your family at this very sad time. Well certainly never see the likes of him again. RIP See more
