This year, BQ will be creating resources and experiences to help educate more people about heavy vehicles. These experiences are aimed at creating a shared perspective as we help contribute to road safety in Queensland. 21.01.2022 This week, BQs CEO Rebecca Randazzo met with other cycling advocacy organisations around Australia to discuss the impacts COVID-19 has had on cycling. The meeting identified opportunities to work together on education and safety campaigns to support new riders. Rebecca also took the opportunity to call for a united voice in asking for an increase to cycling funding from the Federal Government as part of its economic recovery strategy.

21.01.2022 This week, BQ's Director of Education is presenting to the parent body of the Early Learning Sanctuary located at Mermaid Waters. This presentation covers the critical elements of road and bicycle safety, aiming to alleviate the barriers to active travel. This is part of a larger bicycle education program we are running in the coming weeks to help their community improve confidence and comfort when on two wheels. We thought it might be timely to remind our community about so...me of the road rules relevant to bicycle riders. 19.01.2022 In 2021, there are countless options available when it comes to transportation in Australia. With growing concerns for the environment and improving individual health, many now consider their carbon footprint and wellbeing when deciding on transportation methods. In an extensive new report by QUT (Queensland University of Technology), titled 'EBike Experience: Survey Study of Australian EBike Users' findings reveal e-bike owners frequently choose their e-bike for trips... they otherwise would have taken by another motorised vehicle (eg. car). In fact, a key finding from the report stated that, "among Queensland respondents who rode an ebike to work, over half (58%) would have travelled to work by private car or van if the ebike had not been available." If you have been on the fence about switching to or purchasing an e-bike to replace motor vehicle commutes, this report may be a good read for you. 18.01.2022 Bicycle Queensland's advocacy team met with representatives from Brisbane City Council and the property firm Dexus yesterday, discussing ways to improve active travel in Brisbane's CBD. From left are Peter Kelly (3PLus, for Dexus), Matthew Beasley (Dexus), Andrew Demack (BQ), Luke Robertson (Brisbane City Council active transport team), and Rebecca Randazzo (BQ CEO). Dexus's Waterfront Brisbane will be one of the developments that shapes the CBD for the next few decades, so... we're always keen to work towards the best outcomes for bike riders! #activetravel #BQ #dexus

18.01.2022 Ready for our next BQ Ambassador reveal? Meet Anna "Since I started cycling ive suffered through two degrees, had a wedding, birthed and grown a child, started and developed my business and had a career change. In the process I have become a more confident, stronger version of myself and the one constant throughout the peaks and troughs of life are the mountains and valleys I seek on the bike. Riding has looked different throughout the years, from desperately trying to be ...a fast racer, to (eventually) competing against the best in the world, to the more mellow all-round bike appreciation mode I currently operate in. I was introduced to cycling in Sydney University cycling club through a boyfriend, and promptly bought a hardtail mountain bike. Soon after, I upgraded my boyfriend, and bike, and applied for a talent ID program alongside the AIS. Now I am in Brisbane and live the mountain bike life! The boyfriends been upgraded to husband and I have had god-knows how many iterations of new bike days since that first hardtail." 18.01.2022 Our Director of Education visited the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland this week to dive a little deeper into road safety messaging in advertising campaigns and motivations for road behaviours. Discussions with Associate professor, Ioni Lewis and Professor Narelle Haworth are proving to be instrumental in the creation of Patricks road safety and heavy vehicle education campaigns. 16.01.2022 What ever happened to the good old days? According to the ABC article below and statistics collected by the Heart Foundation, walking and riding to school has declined by as much as 50% since the 1970’s. The benefits of fresh air and exercise seem obvious, but over time perceptions about safety and poor infrastructure have contributed to the sad decline. Bicycle Queensland’s Director of Education has been working closely with several schools and early learning centres across ...Queensland to break down the barriers to active travel and help integrate bicycle safety and confidence into the curriculum. We teach children about safe travel methods, bike safety and discuss stranger danger. Through the development of walking, busses or bicycle trains, as well as careful route selection based on school data, parents can feel confident that their child is riding or walking to school safely. The strategies we develop are based on evidence and tailored to suit the needs of the specific location. We feel that through education, we can reinvigorate local active travel networks and strengthen communities to once again feel like the ‘real’ neighbourhoods of a time long forgotten. 16.01.2022 Gold Coast, you're getting a brand new bike share scheme just in time for summer Today, BQ's CEO Rebecca Randazzo joined Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate to announce Lime as the new operator of Gold Coast's new bike share scheme, with 750 bikes being rolled out across the city over the next fortnight. Rebecca spoke about the benefits of e-bikes, stating that 'in a recent Bicycle Queensland survey more than 50% of participants said they’d be interested in trying an e-bike, sh...owing an appetite for new technology and an easier riding experience in the bicycle space. Shared bike schemes like the one being rolled out today by the City of Gold Coast provides people with an opportunity to try out an e-bike.' The bikes are dockless, have built-in GPS and easy to unlock and lock using the Lime app. You'll see them from Runaway Bay to Burleigh, and as far west as Helensvale, Benowa and Robina. #ebikes #ebikehire #lime #bq #bicyclequeensland

16.01.2022 Theres no doubt that e-bikes are a game changer for transport and utility cycling, not just in Europe, but right here in Queensland. The study from Norway (link to article below) found that people who bought e-bikes went from 17% of their transport trips being by bike, to 49%. And they covered more than four times as much distance as they did on their non-power assisted machines. E-bikes provide great answers to the questions many people ask about heat and hills in our climate as well. We still love commuting under our own steam too!

16.01.2022 Logan City Council has received a $2 million boost from the State Governments post-COVID stimulus recovery funds to fast-track construction of a bike link from Logan Village to Yarrabilba. The 3.5 km path follows an old railway alignment, and Logan Council has confirmed the path will be a bitumen seal. We had seen some early designs, and this will be a great link for bike riders of all ages and abilities, and as a result of this funding injection will be completed by June 20...21. Well done Logan City (which is contributing $1.25 mil) and the State Government! The Yarrabilba link is a spur off the Bethania to Beaudesert rail alignment, which is also a prime candidate for developing active transport links in Logan City and the Scenic Rim Councils. Special thanks to Paul Casbolt for the photo. See the full statement here: https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/90395 #BQ #BicycleAdvocacy

15.01.2022 Two great aspects to this announcement. The first is, of course, bypassing the traffic light crossing at O’Keeffe St. The second is that the bikeway will also now miss the dangerous side-street crossing of Carl Street where many BQ members have reported accidents and near-misses over the years. We look forward to hearing more about the timing of construction! #cyclinginfrastructure #bicycleadvocacy

15.01.2022 The answer is always more street trees! COVID 19 has made us more aware of the importance of access to open space in our local areas. Bicycle Queensland has worked hard throughout the pandemic (with Queensland Walks), to inform decision-makers on the importance of designing connected, liveable communities. The Queensland government has this week announced new planning tools and benchmarks which support this concept. Its great to see new requirements around connectivity, blo...ck lengths, footpaths, parks and open space and street trees. There is still much to be done including lowering speed limits in our neighbourhoods, but this is a step in the right direction to make Queensland a better place to live. 14.01.2022 BQ CEO Rebecca Randazzo joined with Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate today for the announcement of the next stage of the Gold Coast Oceanway. The announcement could see an 8km pathway from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads (Pratten Park to Thorn Park). Minster Bailey said: Its still very early days we need to work up a concept design and feasibility study but we absolutely want to work with the community to di...scuss where they want the Oceanway to run and how itll look. The success of other sections of the Oceanway has meant that another project being announced today was a widening of an older section at Burleigh Heads to 5m. The Oceanway is used by Gold Coast locals and tourists in their thousands. The continuous section from Tugun to Coolangatta is the standard were keen to see replicated at Broadbeach. #goldcoastoceanway #goldcoast #qldtourism #BQ #bicyclequeensland Photo credit: Destination Gold Coast

14.01.2022 This week the BQ advocacy team met with Brisbane City Councils Green Bridges project team for a briefing on the Breakfast Creek bridge and the Kangaroo Point bridge. Green bridges have the potential to make Brisbane much more bike-friendly, but the connections to the rest of the active transport network have to be convenient and attractive to users. The concept plans for the Kangaroo Point bridge need a better connection to the river-level Kangaroo Point bikeway, and the un...derpass through to Deakin Street currently marked as potential must be delivered at the same time as the bridge. Likewise, the city connection of the Kangaroo Point bridge will be successful if the proposed CityLink bikeway network (which will give access along Edward Street) is in place. A direct and convenient connection to the Riverwalk boardwalk is also essential. We look forward to working with BCC to make these green bridges great! #greenbridges #bcc #kangaroopointbridge #breakfastcreekbridge #bicycleadvocacy #bicyclequeensland Brisbane City Council

13.01.2022 Brisbane City Council announced today that Victoria Bridge will become a green bridge from 24 January 2021. From that time on, the bridge will carry walkers, bike riders, and buses, but will be closed to other traffic. BCC says on its website: the closure of Victoria Bridge to general traffic will facilitate both the Brisbane Metro project and CityLink Cycleway trial to increase the capacity of both public and active transport to and from the city centre. We understand the ...bikeway on the Victoria Bridge will be built in early 2021 on the downstream side, to enable best connection to the Elizabeth St CityLink cycleway. We’re looking forward to these great new connections into Brisbane’s CBD! Read more about it here: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//victoria-bridge-closure-t

13.01.2022 The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia held its annual conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre this week. Bicycle Queensland’s Director of Advocacy Andrew Demack was a speaker on a panel discussing The Role of Public Works Professional in Community Road Safety. Other speakers were drawn from RACQ, a large regional council (Southern Downs), and the Department for Transport and Main Roads. One topic which sparked interest among the audience of engineers and decision-makers was BQ’s call for lower speed limits on local streets...which actually received some support from the RACQ and TMR representatives. #BQ #IPWEA #BicycleQueensland

08.01.2022 Bicycle commuters to Brisbane CBD and inner-south destinations will have two major detours to deal with for the rest of 2020, and well into next year. The next stage of Queens Wharf casinos construction will impact the Bicentennial Bikeway near Queens Wharf from Monday 31 August until the end of September 2020. The bikeway will be reduced to 3.0 metres wide, there will be temporary fencing either side of the bikeway and construction vehicles might be active (guided by traffi...c control). So take it slow through the worksite! Detail at this link: https://queenswharfbrisbane.com.au//extended-geotechnical/ Over in South Brisbane, the wooden boardwalk over the river in front of the Queensland Museum, State Library and GOMA, is about to close for rehabilitation. The works will take until mid-2021, so its a complete replacement of the boardwalk surface, and some of the supporting structure. The map attached shows the detour, which is along the Cultural Centre tunnel and Stanley Place. Works will start Monday, 7 September and be completed Mid 2021, weather and construction conditions permitting.

05.01.2022 Bicycle Queensland CEO Rebecca Randazzo did some media interviews today as a result of a story in the Courier-Mail. Strangely enough, the Courier-Mail failed to highlight the fact that even by the statistics they presented, bike riders are under-represented in offences committed. That is, by the Courier-Mail’s own stats, bike riders are better behaved and commit fewer offences per capita than motorists. Generally speaking, about 1-2% of trips are by bicycle. In these stats, ...bike riders represented 0.3% of offences committed. Why is there a story about 0.3% of the offences? Where is the story about 99.7% of offences committed by those not riding bikes? Of course, this story is a beat-up. Dishonourable mention as well for the Department for Transport and Main Road’s media team which failed to give reporters the full context when asked for statistics about bike riders and traffic offences.

05.01.2022 Queensland is rapidly catching Victoria as the state to visit for amazing rail trail experiences. Massive kudos to Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller, the Transport and Main Roads Minister, for announcing this great regional project, which runs 45km from Bundaberg North to Gin Gin. The first stage will be 23km and will include a major refurbished bridge at Splitters Creek, and prefabricated bridges for the remaining creek crossings. We met with Minister Bailey back in March a...nd called for the acceleration of rail trail projects to capture the economic and tourism rewards. And heres the refrain from Minister Baileys media release that we have to keep saying every time people say theres no money for active transport projects: For every dollar we invest in bike riding, that means $5 returned in economic benefit to our region dollars crucial as we turn the tide on COVID-19. And by the way, when you get to Gin Gin, theres the Watawa trail that goes from the centre of town to nearby Tirroan. And then head towards Mt Perry to see the amazing Boolboonda tunnel. : Splitters Creek Bridge...ready to be restored! https://www.abc.net.au//bundaberg-rail-trail-bitt/12577294

02.01.2022 Last Friday, BQs CEO Rebecca Randazzo joined newly appointed Assistant Commissioner Michael Condon, for the inaugural meeting of the Queensland Police Service Southern Region Road Safety Committee. Items discussed included a presentation on causal factors of serious injury and fatal crashes as determined by police investigation. Rebecca was pleased to lead discussions on strategies to bring about safer outcomes for all road users, especially those most vulnerable. Stakehol...ders including the trucking industry were very supportive of BQs Commuter Harmony Alliance initiative with a follow up meeting with Assistant Commissioner Condon scheduled for next month. This new committee will give opportunities for all transport sector groups to combine resources, be innovative and collaborate on ways to improve the safety of children and adults using the roads. If successful, BQ has already indicated that we would like to see this model deployed to regional areas around Queensland to allow for direct intervention in localised transport safety issues and concerns. #BQadvocacy #bicycleadvocacy #bikesafety #communityharmonyalliance

There is more to say after R U Ok?, and keeping the conversation going could really help someone feel supported and genuinely cared for when they might be going through a tough time. Its not always easy to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK, but it could change a life. #RUOK #RUOKDAY

01.01.2022 There are two closures and detours in the Indooroopilly area during the school holidays, for works that are part of constructing the Indooroopilly Riverwalk. A section of Radnor Street at Indooroopilly will be closed 28 Sept 2 Oct. For bike riders this will mean a pretty steep detour using Station Rd and Foxton St, so avoiding the area altogether will probably be preferable. Footpath access is maintained for walkers, but that footpath is unsuitable for cycling (narrow, stee...p and a handlebar-grabbing mesh fence on one side). A section of Witton Rd at the western end of Radnor St will be made one way (westbound only) for the period 19 Sept to 3 Oct. Once again, for most riders the eastbound detour would include a couple of massive hills, so trying to use (say) the Centenary Cycleway instead would be a good option. #brisbanebikeclosures #brisbanedetour #indooroopillydetour
