25.01.2022 The US-based Global Designing Cities Initiative is producing free street design guides aimed at making it easier for more people to ride and walk, and one of its directors is speaking to Tasmanians in an online forum on 16 September. Urban designer Skye Duncan is the guest speaker at the City of Hobart and University of Tasmania online forum about how cities are reshaping their streets in response to the COVID-19 pandemic - something yet to happen in Tasmania.

25.01.2022 We had heaps of fun at Bowen Road Primary in Moonah yesterday morning for Ride2School Day. Thanks to Elise Archer MP, Ogilviemp, Sue Hickey - Liberal Member for Clark and Bec Thomas, Deputy Mayor Glenorchy City Council for helping us make smoothies and coming along to see how much kids love riding their bikes to and through the school. And an enormous thanks to our legendary volunteers Di Elliffe, Greg Dutkowski, Daphne and Phil for fixing bikes, timing races and feeding the smoothie monster, we literally couldn't have done it without you!

24.01.2022 The bumpy section of Argyle Street bike lane between Patrick and Tasma streets looks set to be an issue for a couple more weeks. Tasnetworks has had to dig up the lane to upgrade a substation and still has some work to do before the whole job is finished in late April. They have been made aware of the problems with the surface of the temporary asphalt fill and have committed to ensuring the final asphalt surface is fit for riding and will try to get the lane rebuilt as soon as they have finished that section.

24.01.2022 After a COVID-induced hiatus, our e-bike coffee cruises are back with the first scheduled to The Picnic Basket in Sandy Bay on Thursday 19 November at 9.45 am. This is a super relaxed ride for e-bike riders, although all riders are welcome if you can keep up with the e-bikes. The 20 km route follows quiet streets in Battery Point, the painted bike lanes on Sandy Bay Road then the sealed shoulder through Taroona along the Channel Highway and back.

23.01.2022 Minister Michael Ferguson has announced a new Apsley River Bridge south of Bicheno will be friendlier to people on bicycles. As the current bridge has no shoulder and the road on either side has unsealed shoulders, its good to hear RoadsTas committing to improvements for people riding. The new bridge is slated for construction in 2020-21.

23.01.2022 This seems like pure genius - but do we have any birdos out there who could see how this might not work?

22.01.2022 The Queens Domain is a great spot for some casual bike riding and our E-bike Coffee Club is heading there on Thursday 3 December to take in the views, bridges and bush. RSVP online for the 10am departure from Brooke Street Pier for the easy 9km ride, which will of course finish with coffee on the waterfront.

21.01.2022 Great news from last nights City of Hobart council meeting that a $685,000 Australian Government grant will go towards building the missing link between the Intercity Cycleway and Macquarie Point. The cycleway link is one part of a bigger $1.25 million project to upgrade the Regatta Grounds car park and stormwater infrastructure - the remaining funding for the project will be decided in next financial years capital expenditure budget. Alderman Simon Behrakis and Marti Zucco City of Hobart voted against the allocation of money to the project.

21.01.2022 Pathway works on the Tasman Bridge We are doing essential maintenance works on the northern shared pathway (the one next to eastern shore-bound traffic). The pa...thway will be CLOSED between 10:00 am 4:00 pm on Wednesday, 25 November. Cyclists and pedestrians should use the other path, and follow the direction of traffic signs. The southern pathway (next to Hobart-bound traffic) will remain open at all times, and both paths will be open during the morning and afternoon peaks. We need warm and sunny weather for these works to go ahead, so they may also take place on other days later this week or next week, depending on the weather. We will post more updates when/if more dates are confirmed.

21.01.2022 Our ride leader Brian continues to explore every possible bicycle route on the eastern shore and this Sunday 13 September its Kangaroo Bay to Rokeby Hills. Leaving from the Kangaroo Bay playground car park at 10am, the ride will follow the coastal track to Howrah and Rokeby before going over the short bush section of Rokeby Hills to enjoy the stunning views, then down to Tranmere and back to Bellerive via the coastal track, including an interesting diversion through Minerva Park. RSVP online in case of cancellation: https://ridewithgps.com//134790-kangaroo-bay-to-rokeby-hil

21.01.2022 RoadsTas has released a planning study into the Tasman Highway, recommending that new cycleways connecting to the Tasman Bridge and proposed ferry be a high priority. New off-road paths are recommended for the Tasman Highway and between Tas TAFE and Warrane Primary School and new on-street cycleways on Bligh Street, Gordons Hill Road, Bastick Street and Riawena Road. There is no funding tied to the study, which recommends that work on the Tasman Highway path should be the first step.

21.01.2022 Have you filled in the quick survey about how you get to Hobart and how youd like to get there? www.surveymonkey.com/r/headingtohobart The survey is part of research being undertaken by two University of Tasmania interns from the School of Business and Economics who are examining business expectations of how people arrive in Hobart with the reality.

20.01.2022 Some riders may have noticed car delivery trucks putting safety cones around themselves on Campbell Street recently, which can intrude into the bike lane. This is because the trucks have a rail which juts into the bike lane at rider head height, so the cones are being put out to stop people crashing into it. The trucks have been pushed into the Campbell Street loading zone because construction on Argyle Street has blocked access to their ordinary loading zone. ... This will hopefully be temporary and they will soon be back on Argyle Street, but in the meantime please don’t kick the cones out of the way, they’re there for our safety!

20.01.2022 We're helping riders to spread the love with four bike essentials kits being given away over four weeks to people who tell us their stories about how other riders have helped you out. Just head to our website and let us briefly know what your experience was.

19.01.2022 Work to duplicate the road between Launceston Airport and Breadalbane should get underway in the coming months, with the designs now available on the Department of State Growth website. When the work is finished in 2022 people riding will be able to use the 2 metre sealed shoulder on either side of the road, but no dedicated bicycle infrastructure is being included in the project. https://www.transport.tas.gov.au//evandale_road_duplicatio

19.01.2022 The Menzies Study Participation is looking for parents and carers of girls aged 12-18 for research into why they do or dont get into mountain biking and other action sports. 19.01.2022 Big congratulations to Nathan Wass for pledging his 10 km ride on #parkitforhteplanet day last week His bicycle school run with his daughters ended up winning him a brand new Jamis Renegade gravel bike, so there should be many more kilometres to come! Hobart Rotary Club Vice President Matt Drake presented the bike to a very surprised and grateful Nathan outside the Bicycle Network offices yesterday.

18.01.2022 If you are heading out today to do some Christmas shopping, it's a good idea to put the local bike store at the top of your list as some stock is already running low. Our CEO Craig had a chat to Dave on ultra106five about some of the reasons for the delays in bikes and bike parts affecting availability.

18.01.2022 Our monthly Women on Wheels ride this Sunday is celebrating Womens Health Week 711 September, and for anyone taking the Bicycle Network challenge to ride 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes to get 3 months free membership, this will be a good start! 15.01.2022 As #RoadSafetyWeek2020 wraps up the good news has come through that the City of Hobart has been given the green light to reduce its city centre speed limits to 40 km/h. Slower speeds mean quicker driver reaction times and less chance of people being seriously injured or killed in crashes. 40 km/h has been the norm for years in other cities and there is now a worldwide move towards 30 km/h speeds in areas with a lot of people walking and riding, like city centres.

14.01.2022 Hobart’s eastern shore abounds with pockets of bushland and this 16 km ride on Sunday 29 November at 8.45 am will take you to three hilltops, each with superb views. The 2.5 hour ride will explore local bike and bush tracks linking Waverley Flora Park, Rose Bay Hill and Rosny Hill. It’s suitable for hybrid, mountain and tough e-bikes and while the pace will be cruisy there are few hills and rough tracks to tackle.

14.01.2022 Glenorchy City Council Council has 2 plans out for public comment, but disturbingly neither of them mentions much about bicycles! The Greater Glenorchy Plan looks at the centres of Glenorchy, Claremont and Moonah and proposes improvements but no safe paths from the Intercity Cycleway to where people want to go. You can comment before this Monday at https://letstalk.gcc.tas.gov.au/greater-glenorchy-plan. There is also a plan for the Berriedale foreshore that includes creating a foreshore trail but there's no mention of whether it will be wide enough to accommodate bicycles. Have your say before this Monday at https://letstalk.gcc.tas.gov.au/berriedalepeninsulamasterpl

13.01.2022 Its not too late to pledge your ride, walk or bus trip today for #parkitfortheplanet. Just head to the Bicycle Network webpage and enter the distance you travelled today and your contact details. Not only do you raise awareness about the emissions caused by transport choices, you go into the running to win a Jamis Renegade bicycle courtesy of Hobart Rotary Club. ... www.bicyclenetwork/park-it-for-the-planet

12.01.2022 What's the point of living in a city of mountains if you don't try to ride up some of them? The 22km Mounty Nelson High free social ride on Saturday 5 December will head up Mt Nelson Rd and its many bends before returning via bush tracks and the Hobart Rivulet. Meet at the Cenotaph car park at 9.15am but RSVP online in case the ride has to be cancelled at https://ridewithgps.com/events/140991-mounty-nelson-high

12.01.2022 This is an oldie but a goodie, the 25 km Tunnels and Bridges ride on Saturday 28 November will take the Intercity Cycleway out to Montrose before branching off onto paths and quiet streets for the return. It’s a great route to build up your riding confidence but will also be an eye-opener for more experienced cyclists who may not be aware of the paths and underpasses that provide an alternative to busy roads on the river side of the cycleway. The group will meet at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park off McVilly Drive, Hobart, and should return about 12.15 pm and there will be a coffee stop along the way so you can chat to others in the group.

12.01.2022 Fabulous news today that the federal government will provide $1.47 million to fund the extension of the North East Recreation Trail to Lilydale Falls. The renewed funding secured by Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass replaces the grant that expired due to the state government review and parliamentary inquiry delays. Dorset Council can now get on with transforming the disused rail line into a shared path that can be used by locals and visitors to enjoy this beautiful corner of Tassie.

The state budget has allocated $12 million to fixing erosion along the corridor over the next two years.

10.01.2022 The bike riders definitely got the better weather end of the stick on the Rail Trail Run and Ride last weekend, although everyone had to contend with mud! Great photos, showing how rail trails can provide the perfect venue for competitive and recreational events.

09.01.2022 The City of Hobart has released draft designs of its "midtown" street redesign but has not heeded calls from its community action team for safer riding infrastructure. Instead, the council is proposing a narrow uphill painted bike lane in the dooring zone of parked cars. The good news is that bicycle storage boxes will be painted at intersections and more bike parking will be provided. You can see the designs for the three blocks of Elizabeth St between Melville and Warwick streets on the councils website.

07.01.2022 The Maria Island Jaunt is a new one for our social rides, thanks to ride leader David, happening on Sunday 21 March leaving on the 10 am ferry and returning on the 4.15 pm ferry. The group will take the coastal track all dirt/gravel so you’ll need a mountain bike or wide tyres to Encampment Cove with stops at the Painted Cliffs, French’s Farm and Darlington. Bring your own lunch, snacks and water as there is no shop on the island. David will try to organise share car travel to Triabunna so please RSVP before 19 March and talk to him about whether you need a lift or can offer one to someone else.

07.01.2022 The City of Hobart has proposed that a painted uphill bike lane be trialled on Elizabeth Street for one year on one block, with changes to its design to include a painted buffer next to parked cars. Councillors and aldermen will debate the proposal at the City Infrastructure meeting this Wednesday, with the decision then to go to the full council, likely on 7 December. The painted lane between Melville and Brisbane streets will be trialled alongside the city's Ready for Business project on that block which will see outdoor dining decks replace car parks.

06.01.2022 This is an interesting list of facts from Dutch Cycling Embassy about the rise of e-bikes in The Netherlands. E-bikes account for nearly 1 in 5 trips but more than 1/4 of kilometres ridden, showing their worth for people riding longer distances.

05.01.2022 In the Netherland where some e-bikes can go faster than in Australia, there are moves to implement technology that could limit their speed in built-up areas. The trial is also looking at features like vibrating the bike to alert the rider if there is a hazard coming up.

04.01.2022 Good to see that regardless of whether light rail, rapid bus or trackless trams are chosen for the northern suburbs rail corridor, the Intercity Cycleway will expand to a 4 metre width, according to the consultant's report released by the government yesterday.

04.01.2022 Do either of these bikes belong to you? Police seized these two bikes in Sandy Bay on 20 July and believe they may be stolen. If either of these are yours please phone Hobart Police on 131 444 with proof of ownership to claim them - quote property receipt number #182668

03.01.2022 RoadsTas has released the Channel Hwy planning study of priority projects for the corridor, but no funding has been allocated. Sealed 1.5m wide shoulders, an off-road cycling path to Kingston and new bridge over North West Bay River all made the shortlist of high priority projects. The planning study looked at the current and future needs of the fast growing area between Margate and Huntingfield.

02.01.2022 This is an interesting take on the need for our towns to have easy bicycle access to public transport. In Tasmania this could mean creating safer cycling conditions in the streets leading to the Turn up and Go frequent bus routes and secure bike parking at hubs along the route or carrying bikes on board. If bus lanes were brought in to speed up the journey then these routes have the potential to become competitive with private cars, and then theres the northern suburbs rail corridor ...

01.01.2022 The state government is replacing the bridge decks on the Bass Highway at Burnie, closing access to Wharf Rd from 1 September until Friday 9 October to all people walking and riding. The coastal walkway and Oakleigh Park will stay open but keep in mind there will be loud or sudden noises associated with the works if you are passing underneath.
