15.01.2022 Maritime will be collecting expired marine flares in three rounds from 20 November, 2020 to 18 April, 2021 at 46 locations along the NSW coast from Tweed Heads ...to Eden. Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date. Flares contain explosive matter which makes safe and legal disposal difficult. This collection program provides the boating community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares. For a full list of collection centres visit: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//safety-equ/flare-disposal.html See more

13.01.2022 Tweed Reef Deployment Underway! NSWs newest offshore artificial reef is being deployed in 25m of water 7.5km south-east of the Tweed Heads river entrance!... The reef consists of a massive 10m-high steel fish grotto (illustration attached) which forms the centrepiece of the new structure. A total of 32 concrete modules, each standing 5m tall, will surround the fish grotto. This new reef which joins other reefs already deployed at Sydney, southern Sydney, the Shoalhaven, Port Macquarie, Merimbula, Newcastle and Wollongong is designed to increase fishing opportunities for recreational fishers. This state-of-the-art structure is a fantastic example of recreational fishing licence fees at work built using funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust to showcase how fees are being re-invested into projects, Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said in Tweed Heads recently. The Tweed reef weighs in at 834 tonnes and has been carefully designed to provide generations of local and visiting anglers with enhanced opportunities to target a range of key species including snapper, mackerel, cobia, pearl perch and mulloway. Given the reefs location in sub-tropical Tweed Heads, it will likely also attract seasonal visitation from northern species including mangrove jack, big eye trevally and various emperors. With luck, the Tweed reef will soon start producing some great fishing action. It should really hot up as soon as the first push of warm water heads south with the East Australian Current over the next few months! This is yet another great example of your fishing fees at work!

12.01.2022 Cod & Cray Fishing Closures Fishing for Murray cod and Murray crayfish will close from September 1, 2020. The annual cod closure aims to protect the fish duri...ng their breeding season, while the Murray crayfish closure is implemented to protect this vulnerable species. The cod season is closed until December 1, however anglers can still target these iconic native sportfish in Blowering Dam and Copeton Dam during the closed season as DPI research indicates there is minimal natural recruitment in these impoundments. Anglers are reminded that bag (two per day) and slot size limits (55cm and 75cm) still apply in Blowering and Copeton. The Murray crayfish season will be closed until June 2021.DPIs strict size, geographic and seasonal rules protect this species, which has suffered historic declines throughout the Murray-Darling Basin and is listed as a vulnerable species. During the closure, all Murray crayfish accidentally caught must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing laws are designed to protect, conserve and improve our fisheries resources for future generations. Its important that anglers respect fishing closures to ensure sustainable stocks of all species. More info on freshwater fishing rules can be found at https://bit.ly/2WA8pQ2. 07.01.2022 Routine patrol catches illegal fisher in the act A man has been caught in possession of 98 illegal yabby nets containing 106kg of yabbies in the Warrego River i...n Western NSW last month. During a routine patrol, NSW DPI Fisheries Officers in the North West of the State conducted surveillance on a number of Opera House Yabby Traps set in the waters of the Warrego river, near Bourke. An adult male, 50 years of age was apprehended and found to be using the opera house yabby traps and was also in possession of the yabbies. A person who takes fish for sale in NSW must hold a current Commercial Fishing License and hold an endorsement to take yabbies from the fishery. The fisher in question had not held Commercial Fishing Licence for a period of time, was not licensed to take yabbies for sale in NSW and had planned to illegally sell his catch on the black market. The 106kg of yabbies, was returned to the water alive, while the 98 Opera House traps were seized. The man is facing a number of charges with a maximum penalty of up to $110,000. Report illegal fishing via the Fishers Watch phone line on 1800 043 536 or online at: http://tiny.cc/c7nmsz
