25.01.2022 Because it's officially autumn, we start to think about autumn foods. Local apples off the tree. Figs and rhubarb. Where we might find hazelnuts and Brussel sprouts. And then we think of farmers' markets, of course. There's some amazing markets around the area now. Come visit Castlemaine's fantastic farmer's market and adjoining artists' market on the first Sunday of the month, the Maldon market on the second Sunday of the month, and the very pretty Malmsbury market or amazing Talbot market on the third Sunday of the month. 23.01.2022 Another favorite place. Well, of course it is. Castlemaines famed Botanical Gardens, developed in the 1860s, is right next door to us. Sometimes it feels like the gardens are our very own! Beautiful at any time of the year, with majestic trees, some heritage-listed, walking paths, a lake, picnic tables. A special place, and waiting for us all when things are better.

23.01.2022 Our region is famous for the huge number of artists and writers who call it home. We love the work of Castlemaines Michael Wolfe, who has been painting the extraordinary landscapes of Central Victoria for many, many years. His work has been shown widely in Australia and internationally and is included in public, corporate and private collections. "I never tire of the rolling hills, granite outcrops. rhythms, textures and colours," he says. "Theres order and geometry and ...mostly wonderful chaotic confusion. Its a beautiful, rugged, changing landscape that I love using as a backdrop and a motif in my paintings. These paintings here, which I began in 2019, take their cues from the fence lines, gullies and hills of the sheep paddocks of Harcourt, Sutton Grange and Sedgwick. Sutton Grange winds through the lurching granite hills of Central Victoria and over the years Ive returned again and again to walk, sketch, take photos and paint." 22.01.2022 Sometimes when things are tough, it helps to remember some of our favorite places and the happy times weve spent there. So heres the beautiful Vaughn Springs, just 15 or so minutes from us. In the 1920s a weir was built across the Loddon River at the township to allow swimming and boating, and its been famous as a swimming hole ever since. Its hard to imagine this peaceful picnic spot was once a large gold rush township and then home to concerts and bathing beauty contests! Now theres just the gum trees and the birds

20.01.2022 Here's a little story for the true caravanning buffs (and everyone else!) We love it when a van like this comes to visit. It's a 1962 Greythorne Roadmaster, lovingly refurbished by owners Dennis and Sandra Virgona and towed by an amazing 1972 Valiant VH Town & Country Ute the couple have owned for 30 years. The van was on its first outing with the couple after they purchased it late last year. The Virgonas also own a 1957 12'6" Phoenix Bondwood, which is quite famous afte...r appearing in the Modern Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries series, and a 1948 10'6" Don Bondwood. A painting of the Valiant and Roadmaster by well known artist Jenny Sanders appear in a set of Vintage Caravan Combo Placements, a jigsaw and a biscuit tin series. Three more vans await restoration in the couple's garage! Dennis and Sandra Virgonas loved staying with us and plan a return trip soon. The vintage shops at Castlemaine's bustling Mill precinct, just a short stroll away, were an added bonus as they are always on the lookout for memorabilia for their vans! #vintagecaravanmagazine

14.01.2022 Favorite Place Number Three! The charming Castlemaine Railway Station is just a 10-minute stroll from us, which has always made it easy for our guests to choose to leave their car at home. The trains are still running but the station, built back in 1862 and normally part of the bustling heart of Castlemaine, is about as quiet as it can possibly be at the moment. Were looking forward to the cozy waiting room being full again with people heading off to Melbourne or north to Bendigo and beyond, and to hearing the whistle of the heritage steam train as it takes families to Maldon for a special weekend outing.
