13.01.2022 Routine patrol catches illegal fisher in the act A man has been caught in possession of 98 illegal yabby nets containing 106kg of yabbies in the Warrego River i...n Western NSW last month. During a routine patrol, NSW DPI Fisheries Officers in the North West of the State conducted surveillance on a number of Opera House Yabby Traps set in the waters of the Warrego river, near Bourke. An adult male, 50 years of age was apprehended and found to be using the opera house yabby traps and was also in possession of the yabbies. A person who takes fish for sale in NSW must hold a current Commercial Fishing License and hold an endorsement to take yabbies from the fishery. The fisher in question had not held Commercial Fishing Licence for a period of time, was not licensed to take yabbies for sale in NSW and had planned to illegally sell his catch on the black market. The 106kg of yabbies, was returned to the water alive, while the 98 Opera House traps were seized. The man is facing a number of charges with a maximum penalty of up to $110,000. Report illegal fishing via the Fishers Watch phone line on 1800 043 536 or online at: http://tiny.cc/c7nmsz

11.01.2022 Charges after massive seizure of cockles at Wandandian Four people are potentially facing charges in court after being caught with nearly 2500 cockles at Wandan...dian south of Nowra on the NSW South Coast. On Monday 5th October this year a concerned person contacted the NSW DPI Fishers Watch service to report a group of people collecting large amounts of cockles in Sussex Inlet. Local fisheries officers receiving the report continued to liaise with the person who provided descriptions of the people involved and photographs of a boat being used to transport the cockles in eskies to a vehicle at Nielson Lane Boat Ramp. Using this information fisheries officers attended a service station in Wandandian and intercepted two vehicles containing 4 adults and child, with one of the vehicles towing a boat matching the information. A search located three eskies containing 2447 cockles. The 4 adults were interviewed and a majority of the cockles seized and returned live to the waters of nearby St Georges Basin. At that time the daily bag/possession limit for cockles was 50 so the seizure represented about 10 times the daily limit for the 4 adults allegedly involved with the offences. Given the blatant offending fisheries officers are compiling prosecution briefs and the three men and one woman from Sadleir, Parramatta, Cabramatta and Cabramatta West in Sydney are expected to be issued court attendance notices to face charges of exceeding possession limits which carries a maximum penalty of $22,000 and/or 6 months imprisonment. The daily limit of cockles has since been reduced to 20 by NSW DPI Fisheries after a significant increase in collection in recent years raising concerns about sustainability. The offences were detected as part of Operation Stringray 2 operating since the start of September that targets people exceeding bag limits of cockles and other shellfish in the Shoalhaven/Illawarra region. Members of the public are urged to report suspected illegal fishing activity by calling the NSW DPI Fishers Watch service on 1800 043 536 or report it online at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishi/compliance/report-illegal-activity .

09.01.2022 Maritime will be collecting expired marine flares in three rounds from 20 November, 2020 to 18 April, 2021 at 46 locations along the NSW coast from Tweed Heads ...to Eden. Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date. Flares contain explosive matter which makes safe and legal disposal difficult. This collection program provides the boating community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares. For a full list of collection centres visit: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//safety-equ/flare-disposal.html See more

08.01.2022 Cod & Cray Fishing Closures Fishing for Murray cod and Murray crayfish will close from September 1, 2020. The annual cod closure aims to protect the fish duri...ng their breeding season, while the Murray crayfish closure is implemented to protect this vulnerable species. The cod season is closed until December 1, however anglers can still target these iconic native sportfish in Blowering Dam and Copeton Dam during the closed season as DPI research indicates there is minimal natural recruitment in these impoundments. Anglers are reminded that bag (two per day) and slot size limits (55cm and 75cm) still apply in Blowering and Copeton. The Murray crayfish season will be closed until June 2021.DPIs strict size, geographic and seasonal rules protect this species, which has suffered historic declines throughout the Murray-Darling Basin and is listed as a vulnerable species. During the closure, all Murray crayfish accidentally caught must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing laws are designed to protect, conserve and improve our fisheries resources for future generations. Its important that anglers respect fishing closures to ensure sustainable stocks of all species. More info on freshwater fishing rules can be found at https://bit.ly/2WA8pQ2. 05.01.2022 Offenders hiding lobsters can’t hide from the law Four men on the State’s South Coast have felt the pinch of illegal lobster fishing, charged and fined in two s...eparate stings as part of a specialised operation carried out by NSW DPI fisheries officers. In the first sting three men, aged 36, 23 and 21, were charged after they were caught by NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries Officers trying to conceal their illegal catch in a hidden compartment on their boat. Specialty fish, particularly shellfish such as lobster, are targeted by illegal fishers due to their high value on the black market. In this case, these men were spotted diving from a boat in waters to the south of Black Head, Gerroa. When Fisheries Officers conducted a search they found 23 Eastern Rock Lobsters, 17 of which were concealed under the floor of the boat. This illegal catch could be worth up to $5,000 at market prices. Two of the 23 caught were also of a prohibited size, so the boat, motor and trailer as well as the dive gear were seized, while 17 of the lobsters were immediately returned to the water alive. There is a two bag limit for Eastern Rock Lobsters and size limits are also in place for a reason to ensure our fishing resources remain sustainable into the future. The trio recently faced Kiama Court, pleaded guilty, and were fined $2000 each. In a second sting, not linked to the first, a man was convicted and fined $1350 after Fisheries Officers conducted a covert surveillance operation. The recreational diver was followed to a Hotel in Gerringong, where he sold six Eastern Rock Lobsters in the carpark of the hotel. Members of the public are urged to report suspected illegal fishing activity by calling the NSW DPI Fishers Watch service on 1800 043 536 or report it online at https://bit.ly/3lhjcso

01.01.2022 Tweed Reef Deployment Underway! NSWs newest offshore artificial reef is being deployed in 25m of water 7.5km south-east of the Tweed Heads river entrance!... The reef consists of a massive 10m-high steel fish grotto (illustration attached) which forms the centrepiece of the new structure. A total of 32 concrete modules, each standing 5m tall, will surround the fish grotto. This new reef which joins other reefs already deployed at Sydney, southern Sydney, the Shoalhaven, Port Macquarie, Merimbula, Newcastle and Wollongong is designed to increase fishing opportunities for recreational fishers. This state-of-the-art structure is a fantastic example of recreational fishing licence fees at work built using funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust to showcase how fees are being re-invested into projects, Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said in Tweed Heads recently. The Tweed reef weighs in at 834 tonnes and has been carefully designed to provide generations of local and visiting anglers with enhanced opportunities to target a range of key species including snapper, mackerel, cobia, pearl perch and mulloway. Given the reefs location in sub-tropical Tweed Heads, it will likely also attract seasonal visitation from northern species including mangrove jack, big eye trevally and various emperors. With luck, the Tweed reef will soon start producing some great fishing action. It should really hot up as soon as the first push of warm water heads south with the East Australian Current over the next few months! This is yet another great example of your fishing fees at work!
