25.01.2022 At Kenny Street Community Preschool, the Teachers, educators and children endeavour and are committed to learning more about the history, people and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. During NAIDOC Week, they increased their awareness and immersed themselves in knowledge and understandings of the environment, plants, animals and cultural practices. They celebrated the history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Each da...y preschool, the children say their Acknowledge to Country and the educators embed Aboriginal perspectives into our curriculum on a daily basis. Some of activities and experiences the children were engaged in at the service during the week- rock painting, hand prints, collage using the colours of the Aboriginal flag, drawing using Aboriginal symbols, message sticks, painting on bark and making Damper. The Early Years Learning Framework (2009) encourages educators to think deeper and actively promote children’s learning through worthwhile and challenging experiences and interactions that foster high level thinking skills. Educators engage in interactions with children that promote respect for diversity and value distinctiveness and explore the culture, heritage, backgrounds and traditions of each child within the context of their community. 24.01.2022 A special educator shout-out to the incredible Miss Supreet and Miss Mila for their contribution to the program at Manooka Valley Community Preschool as they help the children learn and celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali. Diwali is the Indian festival of lights, usually lasting five days and celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, an...d knowledge over ignorance". The children and educators have had the opportunity to dress up in sarees, view the beautiful displays set up by Miss Supreet, engage in a cooking demonstration where Miss Mila made sel roti, participate in unique arts experiences by decorating rangolis and diyas and had the opportunity to have henna drawn on their hands. It’s been such an exciting week. The children enjoyed a delicious Indian feast of butter chicken, pappadum, naan bread and rice. Miss Supreet even shared special spicy treats in the staff room for the teachers to enjoy. What passionate and dedicated educators!

23.01.2022 Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to inspire and celebrate outdoor play and learning at home and at school celebrated on November 5th. Kenny Street Community Preschool believe and value the benefits of the health, wellbeing and the love for (and of)nature. The Preschool Room children love to spend their time outdoors climbing trees, exploring the properties of dirt, sand and water, connecting to country through the natural elements and making new discoveries. The ou...tdoors provides the opportunity for children to be creative, problem solve, improve coordination and a child’s chance of sensory integration are higher in nature. Angela Hanscom, paediatric occupational therapist and founder of Timbernook states, We are learning there are endless benefits to playing outdoors. One of the greatest is the sensory benefits when children spend time outdoors from a very early age. When you step outdoors, multiple senses are engaged. More synapses are firing in the brain. This organisation lays the foundation for learning later in life. The value we see most at Kenny Street Community Preschool is the appreciation and gained knowledge the children have about the natural world, the children have opportunities to use their imagination, creative thinking and use natural materials in their role play, relaxed and grounded minds, hands on learning through the provision of loose parts- stimulating their senses through what they hear, touch, see and feel.

22.01.2022 The Book Week fun keeps coming! The little (and big!) people of Wollongong City Community Preschool really got in to the spirit this year, check out these inspiring ensembles!

21.01.2022 The children of Fun Club @ Flinders spent last week exploring indigenous art as a part of their NAIDOC week activities. Great work!

17.01.2022 Koonawarra Community Preschool have been celebrating some incredible staff service milestones of late. Karen Gottaas celebrates 25 years and Lynn Best and Rachel Parkes both celebrate 20 years. We are beyond grateful for your dedication to enriching the lives and minds of children and families in their communities. Congratulations and our sincerest thank you!

14.01.2022 The little learners at Bingara Gorge Community Preschool have been practicing their numeracy skills this week. Educators set out an activity with numbered die cards and paddle pop sticks. The children were shown different cards and instructed to count the numbers and then add that number to their paddle pop stick building. Not only did the children display great cognitive skills and excel with their number recognition, they demonstrated creativity and individuality as well. Interestingly, each child was given the same set of instructions, yet all ended up with completely different towers. This is a great example of how we are all individuals, we all learn and interpret things differently and we are all amazing, young learners!

13.01.2022 Congratulations to these little graduates of Port Kembla Community Preschool. Last week, their graduations were celebrated over a number of days and each day, all the children were treated to a special lunch along with a visit from Billy Backpack . Congratulations to the 2020 graduating class and good luck at big school!

08.01.2022 Whilst celebrating Book Week, Bright Spark from Paint the Gong Read joined the children of Kenny Street Community Preschool for story time. The focus of this community program is to encourage early literacy development in children. They read the book ‘I Need a Parrot’ by Chris McKimmie. It was the winner of the 2020 CBCA awards Book of the Year for picture books. The connection to country was talking about the Australian Birds and identifying the different types of birds the ...children noticed in the yard: the quintessential Aussie backyard birdlife. Providing children with materials and resources, the chidlren created their own birds. Using feathers and natural materials from the yard, some fabulous birds were created! Bright Spark’s tips for Early Literacy Development include- * set a time to read each day * talk to your children; babies begin to develop their vocabulary early * singing allows children to practice different sounds and learn new words * rhyming helps your child feel the rhythm of language and understand different sounds that make up each word * visit your local library.

07.01.2022 It has been announced that two Big Fat Smile services, Fun Club at Koonawarra and Kiama Downs Community Preschool will be receiving funding for some much welcomed improvements via the Community Building Partnership funding. Anna Watson MP - Member for Shellharbour visited the children and educators of Koonawarra Fun Club today to present them with their $12, 615 to build a kitchenette for the service. We cannot wait to see the end results for both services!

05.01.2022 The children of Bingara Gorge Community Preschool made pet rocks. One of the children made a request of educator Jaymee to take her pet rock along for her holiday and snap him having fun along the way...and here is the result! The Rock seemed to have a rockin’ good time!

03.01.2022 The children of Fun Club @ Austinmer had a whale of time celebrating Fairy Bread Day yesterday. Not only did they enjoy a delicious treat, the experience was tied back to a theme of Sprinkle Kindness, where the children and educators discussed the role of kindness in mental health. The director and educators were so impressed with their responses to how they can look after their own mental health as well as others. Well done Fun Club @ Austinmer
